Bond's PERSOL's in the film. Anyone actually notice..

K, has anyone noticed this. I did, when I saw the film 3 times on the big screen it looked to me even THEN it was black, and now on DVD, I was able to pause 7 times to see his 2720 style he wears, which as we know seem to be the most popular of the glasses he wears in the film, even though it's seen for a mere 7 1/2 seconds on screen and PERSOL has made these the 'flagship' CASINO ROYALE sunglassess instead of the 2244 which is seen much more. But, it's said by everyone and PERSOL that he wears the 'Tortoise' shell ones, when in fact, he is wearing BLACK! Anyone who has the DVD, look. I have the tortoise shell ones and in whatever light I'm in, the texture can be seen, and they are in sunlight in the film. No texture, you can clearly see they are indeed ALL BLACK! I'm surprised after all this time, nobody has noticed this. Everyone seems to assume from the promotional still by PERSOL where Bond is in the driver's seat of his Aston, and yes, IS wearing the tortoise shell version, that in fact, those are the ones he wears on film. Nope. They ARE black.

I don't think you're right. I think the colors are just hard to see. Many of us believed the 2244s had black arms when indeed they are brown. It is quite possible you've made the same mistake.

Besides, why would Persol lie in their press release?

I have a 42" screen. I've paused the frames by frames. I have the tortoise shell versions and when I'm outside, you can clearly see the colours. I'm a filmmaker so I'm just curious to how they lit the scene outside where the frames look SOLID black? ?:)

I'll have to check myself, my screen is 100" diagonal (projector).

But think of it logically, why would they lie in their press release?

are we comparing screens or something else?:p
I don't think they're lying. The promo still they are using is clearly the tortoise shell versions on him. No doubt. But, I'm just saying, if you look at the frames it's solid black. I put my tortoise shell ones in different lighting enviroments, and I can still see the texture of the frames. Look at your..ahem...big screen if you will, and see as he removes them, no color is seen in the frames as the varied light is on them. They're solid. And at the end, when he's on his boat, when he puts the phone down after talking to M, the glasses are next to him faced down...they're black. Trust me.

I've only been able to watch the scene where he meets Mathis but- you're right- they do look black. I'll have to check the boat scene ASAP, but you could certainly be right.

I know I know! :s confusing isn't man?! In the promo still (or deleted scene/driving interior was not seen on screen) it IS in fact Tortoise shell! True!
But I swear, on screen when he meets Mathis (really the only time these glasses are seen OS) they are SOLID BLACK at the table outside. ?:) It's funny, cuz the tortoise shell is the most popular, becuase it's SUPPOSED to be the BOND version, yet OS it's possibly BLACK. And teh fact PERSOL chose to make the 2720 the BOND pair, when it's seen for seconds, where as the 2244 model is seen and worn more OS. Strange?!8-)

They are also worn at the end of the film, when Bond is on the boat. I'll have to take a look there as well.

This is very confusing! :s :))

Well, I looked at this scene on both the Blu-Ray and DVD, and they do appear black. However, if you continue watching Bond talking with Mathis, there is a couple of shots of the sunglasses on the table, and they appear to be the Tortoise shell frames. Here's a link to a good picture from this scene: http://outnow.ch/media/img/2006/jamesbond-casinoroyale/movie.fs/36?w=1400&h=929 .If you use a photo editor to zoom in on the sunglasses, you can clearly see they are Tortoise Shell frames. I can't explain why in the beginning of the scene they look black, but when they are placed on the table they are tortoise colored. It could be the filter they used to film the scene or something color correction related. It may even be a continuity error on the part of the filmakers, all though they usually have people to catch this sort of thing. My Tortoise shell 2720s appear near black in the right light as well. Also, while watching the boat scene in Venice, to my eye, Bond definately appears to be wearing the tortoise shell frames. This one's a head scratcher. Also, did anyone else notice that everyone who wearing sunglasses in the Mathis scene are wearing Persols? Clearly, product placement at work.

I went back and watched the Mathis cafe scene on Blu-Ray, to get a better look. I think the reason the sunglasses look black is due to Bond being in the shade when he sits down. Going through this scene frame by frame, I noticed you can see light passing through the sunglasses in the lower left corner(seen on the right side of the screen)below the lens and it appears to be tortoise shell color. Again, it appears that either lighting or filtering of this scene, or both, make the sunglasses look black. Going through the rest of this scene, each time there is a shot of the sunglasses on the table, they are tortoise color. Hope this helps.

WOW. You guys are awesome! And thanks for taking the time to check the scene and get more detailed.;)
Yes, looking at the pict, you're right, they are very much tortoise. I guess I never really notice with mine on, but it really DID appear solid black to me in film. Going over it again (man, we all are dedicated here! HA) I think you're right, they ARE the Tortoise! well, I'm glad we all did something together. Thanks for helping clear that up. :D

I bought the black ones anyway - they are much better looking than the tortoise shell versions. More classic.

    I absolutely agree with you!

I only wear black sunglasses, and in my opinion, they are way more cool.

    B-)

Here's one photo of Daniel Craig on the set with sunglasses:

I also think that the frame is tortoise, but from the distance it looks black.

Gotta disagree. Black frames are just kinda bland. Tortoise is much more interesting, although I'm not wild about Luxoticas laminated tortoise. I'd much rather have a solid zyl tortoise but that's another conversation.
