I was wondering if Sir Sean Connery will be in attendance? Have you read anything about him being there in the Scottish papers?

No, I haven't read anything about Big Sean. I'm sure he'd be able to blag a ticket somehow. I expect Billy Connolly will be there as well. Rod Stewart can f*** off though. :))

I quite like him being in the Bahamas, to be honest. It's not quite far enough, but it'll do ;)

The atmosphere in Glasgow city centre building this afternoon - was ever so slightly concerned given how things kicked off in Italy last weekend, but everyone's in good spirits.

    C'mon Scotland!!! :)

(Just to add to the sea of Scottish flags I've seen flying from cars, houses, shops and pubs all afternoon)

M5, are you saying Sir Sean is persona non-grata in Scotland? I was under the impression that Scotland is not too far from his mind, or least that's what I've read - or am I wrong and it's only politics on his part? ?:)

I just can't stand him forcing his "politics" on us from his enclaves abroad. I'm no nationalist, but I respect the views of those who are (within reason), but I'm not taking it from some ex-pat who gave up living here and has no idea what life is like on the ground. I wouldn't say he was persona non-grata by any manner of means, but I know I'm far from being alone in switching him off when he appears to tell us how to vote.

Besides that, from what I see/hear of him in general, I just don't like him...

(Edit: According to BBC Reporting Scotland, he's faxed his best wishes from Nassau 8-) )

I'm just about to leave the house, and Scotland are already a goal down. :( I'm kind of glad I'm not going to see the rest of the game.

It's glorious failure again. :( And now I'm never getting to Austria or Switzerland. I'll never meet one of those milk maids, with the buckets and the pigtails. You know the ones I mean. She's probably called Helga or something. Or Heidi. That's a nice name. Yes, Heidi would be perfect. But now it's never gonna happen. All my dreams ripped to pieces.

Still, it's been a magnificent campaign. The players gave us more than we could ever have asked of them. The World Cup Draw is made next week. We've got a team of young players who aren't afraid of anybody. Bring it on.

Derek Rae would appear to agree with you. Nice article here:

England dumped from Euro 2008 after getting a gift last Saturday from Israel. I can't believe they could not even manage a lousy tie to make it in to the tournament at Wembley of all places ;% :s

Croatia looked very impressive. Might be worth putting a few quid on them in the finals.

And Steve McLaren has been sacked as England manager. I hope he can get a refund on his ticket to Durban for the world cup draw on Sunday.

William Hill are putting 6/4 odds on Jose 'The Special One' Mourinho being the next England manager. Somebody at William Hill has been drinking too many cans of special brew. More likely it'll be Stuart 'Psycho' Pearce. May I recommend Berti Vogts, the former Scotland manager? I believe he's free at the moment.

:)) Are you trying to land us in it, JD? Berti was rubbish wasn't he?

Just feel relief really. The penalty was undeserved, it was all so desperate, we've seen it all before. Surprised none of those shots of McClaren and Venables alternatively gurning or sitting in abject despair weren't in the papers today...

Thankfully not a summer of scraping through to the quarter finals, with 'orrible red and white flags fluttering from white vans and suburban family cars.

It won't be Pearce because he hasn't proven himself. He might be drafted in as a no.2. According to the radio today Capello is already making a pitch for the job and a German journalist says Klinsman is interested. Mourinho has not ruled himself out...yet. The thing about the England job is that they pay you a fortune. McClaren :s :(|) is walking away with a million pounds for failure! I hope they think big because they need a charismatic leader of men and not a gormless grinning useless ginger nonentity who no one wanted in the first place and most people knew was a mediocre yes man with a very average record. Knowing the FA they'll appoint Gareth Southgate. Having big teeth and doing bugger all at Middlesbrough seems to qualify you to be the national coach these days. Most England fans I've talked to think it was worth it not to qualify just to get rid of this buffoon. It's like Graham Taylor all over again.

:)) Southgate does seem to be in WAAAAY over his head, doesn't he?

As an American , I can say with certainty that there is no sports job over here that compares to being England manager. I will say, though, that I do see strong parallels between English football and American basketball. Young players make obscene amounts of money, often forget how teamwork works, treat national teams as burdens rather than honors, and -- SURPRISE! -- lose to to countries whose talent is far inferior but whose will, motivation and cameraderie we can only envy.

Given that parallel, I would submit that who manages the English national team is not the issue. The money and motivation of the players is.

McLaren's contract was ridiculous. On the news it seemed to suggest that he was pocketing more than a million. Nice work if you can get it.

I hear Alex McLeish has resigned his post as Scotland manager along with his two assistants and has signed on to Birmingham City. What's up with that?? I was under the impression that he was going to be around to guide Scotland in WC qualifying - Does this mean back to the drawing board or is someone already in place? This will be the 3rd manager for Scotland in only 10 months - it can't be any good for morale or for the players to quickly get used to a new way of doing things in a such a short time ?:)

It's a farce. Leaving a promising Scotland team for Birmingham City. I couldn't find Birmingham on a map, which is funny, because according to Alex McLeish it is bigger than Scotland. It's not unexpected. The feeling up here was that if we didn't qualify for Euro 2008 then McLeish may end up managing a mediocre premier league team. Well he got his wish. Thanks for the memories Eck, now b***** off. I hope Birmingham get relegated. Given that we don't play a competitive match until next September, it might be prudent to wait for him to get sacked and then he can get the Scots job back. :)) But if we have to choose a successor then:-

Eric Black- can do a lot better than playing second fiddle to Steve Bruce.

Billy Davies-the poor wee guy looks suicidal managing Derby. A trip home would do him some good.

Jose Mourinho- as if, but the look on the English FA's faces would be priceless. :v

Just seen the news. The contenders are-

    The Good

Billy Davies- who has been sacked by Derby. Cheer up Billy. And come on home.

Mark McGhee- who has got off to a flyer at Motherwell, but I can't see him leaving there.

    The Bad:

Graham Souness. NO!!! Pure poison. Keep that a*** away from us. He's fine where he is, talking crap on the TV.

Gary McAllister: I've never forgiven him for having a go at the Scots fans for booing him when he had a bad game.

You know what's really sad, is that I really believed that there was nothing on the map for him but Scotland - I really had come to respect what he stood for and I'm Italian and obviously and Azzurri fan. I bought in to all the hoopla and rhetoric about Scotland forever, and then he leaves for the same old reason, money and greed. Like they say in the States, where there's a buck there's a way. No wonder you guys are so cynical up there :s

Drake, it seems that Scotland is not the only team to always end up in a "group of death" Italy ended up once again with France(so what else is new?), Holland and Romania. Did you guys curse us? :)) :s

:v Yes, we put the curse of the Scotsman upon you. Now you will eat too much fried food, your skin will turn bright red in the sun, and you will heroically lose important football matches. :o

I was hoping Italy or France would get Spain. I seriously want to see the Spaniards getting a doing.

Well, I'm honored to be a partial Scotsman cause I have 2 out of 3 symptoms. Italians do eat a ton of fried foods - heck we use good olive oil with everything :)) Some of us do look like lobsters when we try sitting in the sun (speaking for myself). I usually joke with my co-workers that I'm more like a vampire cause I avoid the hot sun like Dracula :)) but we do have one saving grace, a knack of coming through when our backs are against the wall which happens more often than one likes which in turn makes for a jittery and nail biting Italian National Team fan. 8-) - and with the new group of death, the third sympton has a real possibility of infecting us and realizing your curse. Well, can't win them all ;)

Apparently George Burley is interested in managing Scotland. He would be an outstanding choice. Hearts would have been Scottish champions under Burley a few years ago if it wasn't for the interference of a mad Lithuanian. If I was the SFA I would get him right now while he's still keen.

Just heard through the grapevine that Fabio Capello will be England's new manager. As I understand it, he has already agreed in principle with the FA. I'm not sanguine on a manager not being a citizen of the country he manages. It's ok in league play but on a national level, it just doesn't seem right. Just my opinion.
