I've had a chance to check out the PPS, but haven't fired one yet. I need to get around to doing so, as I am very interested in buying one. All the reviews on it have been very good to excellent and I was very impressed with what I saw. The PPS is the natural replacement for the PPK and should be Bond's pistol of choice IMO.

The P99 is a beautiful weapon, but a bit too large for easy concealment. Perhaps as you posted earlier, Bond could use the P99 for those missions where firepower is more of a concern than concealment. Then use the PPS when deep undercover.

No, that is not a stock photo. It is my gun James. Mass., the worst state in the Union to own a gun. You need to move :p

I've been giving it some serious thought. New Hampshire and Vermont are looking better, and better.

The only difference is it comes in a metal box, says First Edition on the gun, and the frame is painted. Both versions come with (1) 6 round and (1) 7 round magazine. You can also purchase an 8 round mag separately.

I have a qeustion, if a real P99 is roll-marked, does it have painted markings on the outerbarrel?

I've answered this question about 54 times. Check your PM's and your own threads for the answer.

I've answered this many times and sent you pictures of all three variations, a link to a site that answers all of these questions and it is posted in abut five different threads in the M&C forum.

The only markings on a Walther are:

    ROLLMARKED
    LASER ETCHED
    STAMPED

    They don't paint their guns.

OK, now you're doin my'ead in.

The PPS and P99 have a stamped Walther banner and model number stamped on the left side of the slide. All other markings (serial number and proof marks) on the slide, breech/barrel rear of frame are laser etched in gold. This is NOT paint. but colour laser etched permanently into the steel.

    No, Here....

    DSC001063.jpg
This is stamped and has no colour, this is the only part of new Walthers to be stamped.

The rest of the markings on the pistol are laser etched, it is gold in colour NOT PAINT, and is etched into the steel itself at an almost molecular level...

Yes, Maruzens slide markings are exactly the same as the pre-2004 models on which it is based.

I got one for display with my airsoft Walther, but found that it fits my H&K USP Compact even better. It's not the best holster for retention, but feels good and is secure enough unless you're practicing Parkour in a construction site... hmmm.

Is that a rubber stunt P99?

    Certainly is.

Nightshooter, thanks for the complement. I shoot with a Canon 40D and a Canon D1 MKIII. For pics like these, I use primes most of the time. Some of the pics were shot with the EF-180mmL macro lens, hence the shallow depth of field even at f-11. A few were also shot with a 24-105L. I use strobes for the lighting. One of the strobes had a snoot with a red gel filter to add some color.

Very cool. I'm in the market for a DSLR, and right now I'm most impressed with the Nikon D300, though the 40D looks excellent as well.
  • jbholstersjbholsters Posts: 179MI6 Agent
I think you would be pleased with either camera. I prefer Canon because I prefer there L lens to the better Nikon equivalents.

There are pictures of Craig using the PPK during filming.

Here are some piccies of my new deac PPS. Overall I'm really impressed by it's size and looks. The pictures on the net and Walthers own site do not do this little fella justice. It's more like the older P99 than I imagined but 1/2 the size, nothing Glock like about it at all. I bought the case seperately on the Bay some months back in anticipation and cos' I'm sad.

    pps.jpg

Even the case surpiseD me with it's overall small size, there is alot of space around the gun cut-out and my P99c and Asp was too big to fit in, only the PPK was comfortable in there:

    pps2.jpg

It came with two mags as standard (6 & 7 round), I preferred the 7 round mag with the extension when I fired one a few weeks back, but the smaller mag is equally usable. A 8 round mag is also available, but the extension is too big for concealed carry and defeats the purpose of the pistol, although a couple in a mag pouch would increase firepower.

    pps3.jpg

    pps5.jpg

    pps4.jpg

The overall size of the PPS surprised me when I first handled it (and stil does), I was expecting something wider than this although not as wide as the P99. Again the pictures on the net don't do this service, the PPS is one very very slim pistol, slimmer than the P99 by a long way and also slimmer than the Asp. The length and other dimensions I thought would be the same as the P99c, but it was shorter by a good 8mm and makes the P99c look like a brick in comparison. It is a true undercover deep concealment pistol, and not at all ugly as we all believed upon first glances. It has the elam and exotic looks that shout out that Bond should be carrying this piece. No doubt at all.

    And with a CR suppressor:

    pps7.jpg

The PPS looks absolutely superb with the Casino Royale suppressor, a real modern pistol for a modern Bond. I hope we see this silencer re-used in 22, it could become iconic Bond.

    pps6.jpg

    pps8.jpg

    pps10.jpg

    pps12.jpg

The comparison pictures above with the P99, P99c and PPK are deceptive due to shadows, the PPS is hugely different in terms of thickness.

Here's one for Nighshooter with a BIG suppressor...

    pps13.jpg

And compared to ye olde PPK? It is as thin as the PPK easily and it is not very much larger. The trigger guard is just slightly larger and sits lower due to the slide and upper frame champbered for 9mmP. It is actually much slimmer in the grip area/butt than the PPK and has no protrusion like the safety and mag elease on the PPK, thus making it snag free on the draw. In use it would be easier and quicker to draw than the PPK and just as concealable. The weight is almost the same, it is VERY light and yet feels evenly distributed and natural in the hand. A natural point and shoot pistol.

The PPS seems to me a modern take by Walther of the Asp project, and this is why I love it. For us PPK fans, it really does make the PPK obsolete in terms of concealed carry for serious players.

ASP9mm, Thanks for the write-up and photos!

In a way I'm glad this didn't make it as the new Bond gun as I have been having fits trying to find a way to get one of these in California, which has very ugly import restrictions that would fustrate oo7 himself.

However, this would have been a perfect Bond pistol, and while it may be an update on the ASP, I prefer to think of it as a .25 Beretta 418 on steroids .... both are striker fired you know!

Great photos with the silencers ... Who knows there is hope than in Bond 23 we may see this pistol. Would be nice if Felix Leiter was to carry one and introduce Bond to it. But the only thing Leiter ever carries is oo7's coat!

As you have pointed out before in our coversations, the Beretta with Bonds modifications on it was very similar to the ASP mods too, only about 20 years prior. Again, I think it was you that pointed out that there could well be a link between Theodore and Bonds Beretta, the ASP and PPK. It was the PPK that Theodore first converted into an ASP. It would be cool if the Fleming books created that spark in Theodores mind.

Thanks for the photos. I'm picking mine up in August or so.

I have to ask Asp, how is it that you are allowed to own weapons in the UK?

From reading on my gun boards I was under the impression that weapons ownership was strictly Verboten across the Pond with the exception of some shotguns and rifles, and then only if a member of a shooting club with the weapons secured on the premises.

That particular one is a deac, but I'm a firearms instructor for the military and so get to play with almost anything that goes bang. Unfortunately I can't take them home though :#

Yeah, the firearm laws suck over there.

I'd love to make a new life in the UK, but the firearm laws are what's keeping me in the States.

Great Pics Asp9mm, I was very interested in the end on shots showing the 3 dots on the sights. I remember the same type of system when I used to shoot Glocks. I must admit I could never get the hang of them though! My grouping were always all over the place!
I used to be a member of a rifle and pistol club, my main discipline being .22 target pistol and I used to own a Hammerli. But I used to get to use a number of the other members pistols. I remember a Glock 40 actually making my fillings ache!
I did at one time consider taking up "Practical Pistol' and doing the course but always felt more comfortable with smaller calilbre's and the self discipline of target shooting. Then the gun laws all changed and I had to hand over my lovely Hammerli to the home office and accept their offer of compensation.
Didn't that go a long way to stop the gun crime in the UK!

In all my years of target shooting though I never did get to fire a PPK though :(

I must admit I do envy you!

To that I plead most guilty!

While I think it likely that Theodore was inspired by Fleming and the Bondian Beretta, I suppose some folks out there would say it was more likely that both Fleming and Theodore were out to create the same result, and just took different routes. I'd say that Theodore's end product was infinitly better than Fleming's. ;)

As for the PPK, absent being made famous by Fleming, I think we would still hold it in high esteem for the classic firearm design it is. Except for it's chambering, it's damn near the perfect pistol - all due respect to J.M. Browning!
