Actually Mr. Martini, that article was from back in October of 2006 and they were talking about The Dark Knight. There is still no word on who will be the villains in a potential third Batman film helmed by Nolan. Personally, I always thought Bob Hoskins would have made a good Penguin.
Anyhow, here's a few new B:TDK shots I came across today while surfing around. I think they're new but apologies in advance if they've been posted before.

Thanks for the pics, Tony. The first one borders on a very good looking painting or it's a photo. I'm not sure...
As for potential villians in Nolan's sights, I'd like another Penguin but then again I don't; I feel the same way about Catwoman. I would however like to see The Riddler done right this time.
Anyway Two-Face can pretty much carry a film on his own, so could Scarecrow in FULL costume, Mad Hatter, etc...
I know it's out of the question with the current regime but doesn't anyone think that Clayface & Killer Croc are due for a summer movie romp with the franchise?
I guess if it was the right actor and right look for Cobblepot, I could get behind it...
Mrs. Man Face: "You wouldn't hit a lady? Would you?"
Batman: "The Hammer Of Justice isUNISEX!"

I don't think Nolan would get within a 100 miles of Croc or Clayface. Both are just too out there given Nolan's sensibilities. It also doesn't help that Clayface is similar to the Sandman.
I have a feeling Catwoman could make an appearance. Nolan still hasn't given us a female villain and he and Bale might be interested in exploring the emotional tension that exists between her and Batman.
I could also see him doing something with Bane, who if you tone down the physical strength a bit, could be the kind of "believable" villain Nolan seems to like.
Not sure about Riddler; his modus operandi just doesn't seem to mesh with what Nolan has given us so far. Same goes for Penguin. If either character gets used, I'd expect some significant alterations from their 4 color counterparts.

Clayface does. Probably more recognizable than Sandman and his abilities aren't as limited as the "Man Peter Let Get Away"... 8-)

Ugh. After that bomb she laid solo from 3-4 years ago, I sort of doubt that...I don't know- she's one of my lesser favorite Bats villians seeing that I prefer Poison Ivy, Talia & Harley over her... I can only take her in small doses...
Of course on the old tv show, which was a little different,, Catwoman was just lust for me... Lee, Eartha, Julie...
I could also see him doing something with Bane, who if you tone down the physical strength a bit, could be the kind of "believable" villain Nolan seems to like.

I think your fanboy quotient is getting into the danger level. )
I'm not wild about another Catwoman appearance either ( sorry Halle :v ), just speculating into what Nolan may find interesting.
Bane would allow for some good one on one action with Batman. And they could make a good subplot out of his addiction to venom; they could even mine the old Venom graphic novel and make Bruce Wayne temporarily addicted as well. I have a feeling Bale might dig exploring that angle of the character.
I've never been much of a Poison Ivy fan, I can't get behind somebody who is basically a living plant.
Mr. Freeze could be an interesting villain, if they follow the animated show and make him a tragic character instead of the one line quipping, scenery chewing clown from B&R; I'm just not sure if enough time has passed since that travesty to wash the bad taste away.

In Nolan's world, we all know that Poison Ivy wouldn't be a living plant but she's worthy still. ) Got to agree with you on Bane though.
Funny you should bring up Mr. Freeze, Tony...
I was telling someone the other day that as much as I love Nolan's accomplishments with Bats thus far, he'd probably make Victor Friesz an ordinary guy who brandishes a hypodermic syringe and goes around injecting the innocent citizens of Gotham with freon or something... 8-)

I think Pengy could work in Nolan's vision, if he's done as a shady nightclub owner. The tuxedo, monacle and nickname would work perfectly, as they would all be part of Cobblepot's theatrical public persona. And Toby Jones--c'mon, short, pudgy, droopy jowls. . .put a big beak on him and he is IT!
One night, as I'm standing on LaSalle Street in Chicago, trying to line up a shot for "The Dark Knight," a production assistant skateboards into my line of sight. Silently, I curse the moment that Heath first skated onto our set in full character makeup. I'd fretted about the reaction of Batman fans to a skateboarding Joker, but the actual result was a proliferation of skateboards among the younger crew members. If you'd asked those kids why they had chosen to bring their boards to work, they would have answered honestly that they didn't know. That's real charisma—as invisible and natural as gravity. That's what Heath had.
Heath was bursting with creativity. It was in his every gesture. He once told me that he liked to wait between jobs until he was creatively hungry. Until he needed it again. He brought that attitude to our set every day. There aren't many actors who can make you feel ashamed of how often you complain about doing the best job in the world. Heath was one of them.
One time he and another actor were shooting a complex scene. We had two days to shoot it, and at the end of the first day, they'd really found something and Heath was worried that he might not have it if we stopped. He wanted to carry on and finish. It's tough to ask the crew to work late when we all know there's plenty of time to finish the next day. But everyone seemed to understand that Heath had something special and that we had to capture it before it disappeared. Months later, I learned that as Heath left the set that night, he quietly thanked each crew member for working late. Quietly. Not trying to make a point, just grateful for the chance to create that they'd given him.
Those nights on the streets of Chicago were filled with stunts. These can be boring times for an actor, but Heath was fascinated, eagerly accepting our invitation to ride in the camera car as we chased vehicles through movie traffic—not just for the thrill ride, but to be a part of it. Of everything. He'd brought his laptop along in the car, and we had a high-speed screening of two of his works-in-progress: short films he'd made that were exciting and haunting. Their exuberance made me feel jaded and leaden. I've never felt as old as I did watching Heath explore his talents. That night I made him an offer—knowing he wouldn't take me up on it—that he should feel free to come by the set when he had a night off so he could see what we were up to.
When you get into the edit suite after shooting a movie, you feel a responsibility to an actor who has trusted you, and Heath gave us everything. As we started my cut, I would wonder about each take we chose, each trim we made. I would visualize the screening where we'd have to show him the finished film—sitting three or four rows behind him, watching the movements of his head for clues to what he was thinking about what we'd done with all that he'd given us. Now that screening will never be real. I see him every day in my edit suite. I study his face, his voice. And I miss him terribly.
Back on LaSalle Street, I turn to my assistant director and I tell him to clear the skateboarding kid out of my line of sight when I realize—it's Heath, woolly hat pulled low over his eyes, here on his night off to take me up on my offer. I can't help but smile.

A few posts ago, Tony mentioned Catwoman, who I've always liked, but then in response to that RA brought up something which would truly be a good idea - Talia. We have Ra's in play, so why not have Talia introduced (and then we can get Ra's back, as well)?
Thanks for posting Nolan's reaction, Tony. Seems like Heath really loved what he did.
That's a nice tribute from Nolan. Thanks for posting. It can't be easy editing The Dark Knight now. It doesn't surprise me that Nolan feels haunted by Ledger's presence when he's locked in the editing suite, putting his final performance together and seeing his face every day. This is going to be a very strange film to watch and it's going to carry a lot of sadness with it.

Thanks for posting that excerpt, Tony. Nice article.
And yes, Talia would be a better choice in future installments under Nolan. It would sort of bring his trilogy full circle and besides, she's a more worthy character to Batman than Catwoman will ever be.
Selina Kyle brings that sexual tension we're accustomed to but Talia's actually a weakness for the Dark Knight. She is his equal. It also brings Ra's mystique full circle should he return to finish what Batman previously interrupted. She's sexier too...
Catwoman, in the comics, can hold her own but she's just overrated IMO and recycling her in this manner isn't necessary when there are other villians still untapped that can be utilized in new stories and won't be too outrageous for Nolan to convey to audiences.
It's already bad enough that WB hasn't got the sense or nerve to experiment cinematically with their other properties (and they have an arsenal of material) outside of Supes & Bats but to just retread the same villians over & over in different incarnations can be tiresome sometimes.
I still believe that The Riddler deserves to get a real chance at redeeming himself after Carrey hacked Gorshin's aura...in a poor way. 8-)

Getting back to Nolan's article for a minute, one of the reasons I found it interesting and worthwhile was that it pretty much refuted all this garbage we'd been reading about how Heath Ledger's death was somehow connected to his portrayal of the Joker. If Nolan is to be believed, and I see no reason to doubt him, Ledger was a well adjusted young man playing a role and having a good time doing it.
I think the media have caught on to this as well. Instead of saying the Batman movie is cursed, they're now shifting their attention to the Terry Gilliam "curse" - ostensibly because Ledger died while filming that movie and also because Jean Rochefort got a herniated disc during Gilliam's aborted Don Quixote movie. Of course, they conveniently forget all the other film and television work that Gilliam has done over the years. Talk about grasping at straws. 8-)
As for the villains in a third Nolan Batman movie (assuming we ever get that far), I still think people would pay good money to see Halle Berry reprise her genre defining role as Catwoman ... well, maybe not
Seriously, I'm not sure who I'd like to see. From what I've read, Two-Face looks to figure in the third film, but I don't really know who would be a good foil. I think Riddler is out, simply because that combination was already used in Batman Forever and there's really no point in inviting further comparisons. I still believe the Penguin and Bane are the most compatible with Nolan's sensibilities. They could also go for Talia or somebody like Lady Shiva as she could tie into the whole League of Assassins angle as well.

o.k. this is a bit of speculation but on the virgin radio breakfast show this morning there was a debate going on about which was better the Enterprise or the TARDIS. well anyway David Tennant is a friend of the presenter and actually phoned in to argue for the TARDIS. after much banter and joking christian(the presnter) went off on a tangent about how he knew Tennant was lined up for the Riddler at which point it all went a bit quiet. not saying its true but might be something to keep in mind. it might also be worth checking out the virgin radio web site as they put up a highlights of the week podcast.
I'd like to see the Penguin, but played as a normal mobster - not as Danny De Vito. And as for the Cat -I think Halle Berry's little film killed any chance of that happening.
Persoanlly I would have liked to see the Joker return aided by Harley Quinn - that would have blown me away, but somehow I doubt that will happen now.
For reasons already stated, I doubt that Riddler will be in the third Batman film, but I think it would be great if he at least made an appearance. I think he's a fantastic villain and he's my second favourite Burton/Schumacher villain after Joker.
"He’s a man way out there in the blue, riding on a smile and a shoeshine. And when they start not smiling back—that’s an earthquake. and then you get yourself a couple of spots on your hat, and you’re finished. Nobody dast blame this man. A salesman is got to dream, boy. It comes with the territory." Death of a Salesman
There's a short article over at IGN today about WB execs meeting to decide how to market the film going forward. There's also a little spoiler about Harvey Dent in there so read at your own discretion.
A first look at Batman: Gotham Knight is now below! Directed by Bruce W. Timm, the direct-to-DVD six-part anthology film bridge the gap between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. The writers include Brian Azzarello, Alan Burnett, Jordan Goldberg, David S. Goyer, Josh Olson and Greg Rucka.
Thanks for the link Rogue AI. That was interesting to say the least. I've never been much of a fan of the anime/manga style - way too exaggerated and melodramatic for me - and I'm not really wild about how Batman or his rogues gallery seem to have been realized. But it should still be interesting to watch as Batman has always lent himself to different visual interpretations.

The Sideshow figure looks pretty menacing. As for Mattel, it looks like I found the answer, from DigitalSpy:
An action figure depicting Heath Ledger in the role of The Joker is to go on sale.
The 28-year-old had just finished shooting Batman movie The Dark Knight when he died of an overdose of prescription drugs on January 22.
His family has given its blessing for the character to be included in a range of figures from toy company Mattel to coincide with the film's release.
A Joker armed with a rocket launcher and another with a knife will be available from May.
A spokesman for Ledger's relatives said: "Heath was very proud of his work in the film and his family is aware and supportive of the plans for the movie."
