Here's information from Monday on shooting in Chicago:

New Dark Knight Set Report and Photos!
    Source: Streaker_67, Spiral April 23, 2007

Scoopers 'Streaker_67' and 'Spiral' sent us a new report from The Dark Knight set in Chicago along with new photos! Here's what happened today:

I was there between 8am and 3pm today.

Extras were brought out of the post office dressed in business attire, perhaps in the area of 20 people. They were joined on Van Buren in front of the post office by more extras in cars.

The helicopter tried to come in but it was just too windy and it was on scene less than five minutes before leaving.

The extras milled about for awhile, then ran thru their movements in the cars before all the cars were pulled to either side of the street and the extras all gathered on the stairs, where they were then led inside the post office. This was around 9am, and they would not reemerge until after 3pm.

In the building across from the post office where the zipline originates, they were filming inside for almost two hours, though very little was visible. Occassionally a line was shot out of the window, fell down the building and was then pulled up.

Around 11 Christopher Nolan and about 8 people following him came out of the building and went into the post office. After they left a large camera was removed from that building, followed by about 8 carts of equipment, leading me to believe they are done filming the interiors for the big cross.

Something of note: two stunt men (I'm guessing) walked right by me on the way to the building. Each of them had a clown mask in a clear plastic bag. They were different than the other masks because they were soft, not hard. When I saw actors carrying them in the suburban, they seemed like hard plastic that maintained their shape. These masks were rubbery (though they looked the same style), and in fact one of them was folded nearly in half!

Between 8am and 3pm I am 98% certain that no human went across the zipline. My 2% uncertainty comes from the short times I was not able to see it (due to moving positions).

The wall is coming along: 4 doors were added to it, and after I left at 3pm my friend who stayed behind told me that a school bus (not the one inside the post office, but another one) was BACKED into the door frame, where it just barely fit.

After this the extras reemerged, the helicopter returned, and a street scene was shot 8 to 10 times, whenever the helicopter came by. Each time the helicopter went by, a black 'bag' looking object was sent across the zipline, but no person. On the last two runs the extras were reacting to (pointing at) the school bus in the fake wall section.

The extras left around 4:40, and construction on the wall resumed, with them building the wall around the bus that was parked partway through it.

    More filming will be tomorrow!

You guys can view the photos here if you"d like:

Part of what I do for a living involves security, since 9/11 the Chicago Police and Fire Department have begun sending email messages to large downtown buildings when an event occurs that may cause some alarm to downtown building occupants. Today I received this email message which I thought you Batman fans might enjoy, it appears a fire occured on the set where Batman is filming. Below is what I just received

    Street Closure UPDATE:

Due to the filming of Batman there were traffic restrictions in place at this location, the following closures are in effect while CFD addresses the fire:

Canal is closed from Harrison to Van Buren

Van Buren is closed from Clinton to Wacker

These closures will remain in effect until CFD & CPD equipment leave the area, then filming traffic restrictions will resume.

CFD and CPD have responded to investigate smoke from the roof of the old post office at Van Buren and Canal.

Investigation revealed an electrical malfunction in a piece of equipment on the roof that caused a small electrical fire and smoke. The building is abandoned and is also the location where Batman is being filmed today.

Not sure, it may have been, I just got the email from the Chicago Police Dept. That building is only about 6 blocks from where I work. If they are still filming Friday I may take a walk and snap a picture or two.

Fair enough; to be honest I don't really mind how they go on the Joker- we've trad Jokers and all other varieties, really- I'm not particuarly wed to any. I don't doubt we'll get green hair, white face and a red smile of some kind... I can't really think of a variation on that which would upset me too much. I did rather enjoy the scar smile idea; wouldn't mind getting that.

Either way, I have the feeling we'll see him pretty soon- I'm sure the film company don't want the first clear shots of him to be some grainy rubbish ones shot from half a mile away in bad lighting.

Yeah... I was expecting something clever and got something that thought its final 'twist' hadn't been worked out by everyone in the cinema, including the bunch of 13-year old girls sitting behind me who were talking more than concentrating on the film. And the scene where Michael Caine's character, who lives in London, sends a note to Jackman's character, who lives in London, in a pub in London, which says 'meet me at 15 Aldwych, London'... I dunno; just showed how little the filmmakers regarded the audience's intelligence if you ask me.
I know it's not always the place you're getting to but the way you get there, and the relationship beteen Jackman and Bale was good stuff, but I just wanted a plot that was clever and adult.

Good stuff. Sadly, unlike looking out for Spider-Man filming or something, I suppose you're unlikely to see the caped crusader himself unless you stay up all night! He doesn't really go for daytime work, sadly! :)

Y'know,Rogue,I was a bit perturbed,too-until after looking at the makeup, which may not even be what Nolan finally uses.

It's entirely possible that,as opposed to trying to duplicate The Joker of the animated series or TV show or 1989 film, the Nolan brothers are going straight to the original source of The Joker's face--the silent movie The Man Who Laughs as the reference for their version of The Joker.

We know that it was Batman's co-creators writer Bill Finger, and artist Jerry Robinson, who actually created The Joker, and that they used stills of the actor Conrad Veidt in full makeup as Gwynplaine--the man whose mouth has been carved into a permanent grin--as the model for The Joker's face.

In fact, Gwynplaine and Joker's faces are practically identical--aside from the fact that The Joker's nose and chin are slightly exaggerated and thus longer than those of a normal human being. But everything else is there:the high cheekbones, the high forehead and hairline, the burning eyes, and the ever-present smile. It's an incredibly eerie and dramatic appearance--once seen, not easily forgotten. And,dare I say it,aside from The Joker's unusual coloring,it's also a "realistic" look.
Maybe that's what the Nolans hope Ledger will resemble.

In my opinion,if handled correctly(i.e.not played for laughs),this appearance could work--and work very well indeed...

Just routine speculation on random snippets/rumours from a film in production, as far as I can tell; rather like with CR about a year ago this time :) A Batman thread seems quite a logical place in which to explore issues such as this one :)

Yeah- I'm sure I saw another bit of fake fanart that had Joker-ised an image from that film, and it looked absolutely cracking! :D
And there were some other lovely ones with Christopher Eccleston as the joker- that worked rather well too.

Batman On Film is reporting that Eric Roberts has been added to the cast of B:TDK as Boss Maroni. In the comics, Maroni was the man that essentially created Two-Face by throwing acid at Harvey Dent's face, scarring him and thus twisting his psysche.

This is of course all rumor but Roberts does sound like a good choice to me as he has the sleazy mobster thing down pat.
  • emtiememtiem SurreyPosts: 5,999MI6 Agent
Heh! That's rather fun- I like Eric Roberts; he's a good, nasty villain- shame he doesn't get more big stuff.

Goodness- there's actually going to be some Americans in Batman this time! :D

Very well, then! Secondary discussion closed, as far as I'm concerned...

Back on topic: I can understand the concerns of those who didn't particularly like BB to be worried about DK...but for those of us who enjoyed the revitalized, reinvigorated (and rebooted!) Batman we got in Begins, I think there's much to be positive about as far as a second Nolan offering is concerned...fake Joker makeup shots notwithstanding ;)

Mr. Garvin makes an excellent point about a possible reference to The Man Who Laughs...I hadn't thought of that.

Really looking forward to this one B-)

No; that would have been the conversation I was referring to. ' :) '

Well, obviously! :) For me, I'd like to see a little more of that larger-than-life element that Batman usually has: I don't want the Joker to be made too realistic, otherwise he and Batman turn into proper scary nutjobs and I'm not sure I want to see either of them treated as a hero. And I liked the wonderful design we got in the Burtons; not that there weren't elements of that in Begins, but I was sad to see that world mostly go. Hopefully the presence of the Joker -who is a pretty wild character- will mean that the fantasy factor is notched up just a little. Not so as that those who enjoyed the first will be disappointed, but enough for it not to be uncomfortable viewing. And Eric Roberts can always be counted on to camp proceedings up a bit! :D

Can't disagree with you about Burton's Joker, though. I rather liked it---much better than the travesty he committed with DeVito's Penguin, IMRO :# I'm all for keeping the Joker fantastical, as opposed to the 'rumour' shot we've recently seen...still, as ever, it's up to the material to validate whatever interpretation they choose...

Maybe all Bale means is that unlike Cesar Romero and Jack Nicholson,Heath Ledger won't play The Joker as broadly--that his version will be more frightening:which would be true to the original incarnation of this character. To my knowledge, that really hasn't been done before--certainly not in live-action.

Also,Bale may not be overly familiar with the other interpretations of The Joker, so even if Ledger's take is very much like, say,Nicholson's,it might still seem "very different" to him...

I wouldn't lose too much sleep over that quote. Every actor says his performance will be "very different"; to say otherwise would imply they don't have a handle on the material, and their egos would never allow it. Besides, it can still be "different" from Nicholson and Romero - neither of whom were 100% faithful to the comic - and still ring true to the books.
