I'll have to second Tony on this. I loved the 60's show, but that is where I think Robin should stay. ;) If Nolan is going to introduce extra characters, I would prefer it be villains. Plus, any screentime that Batman doesn't have, I would prefer it go to Alfred or Fox. I mean, Batman has three allies; does he really need any more? :))

Well, I agree with all three of you; I didn't want a Batgirl in the Nolan pictures dumbing them down but it wouldn't have hurt to have her as Gordon's daughter.

I believe there were some Batman stories where Babs was inserted yet no mention of her aspiring to become a crimefighter ever came to fruition...She was just there for association to the whole Batman mythos.

It will be interesting to see if Gordon's son will play a key role in future segments.

I know I would cringe if the son becomes a Robin in some inadvertent way... :D

I'd probably go Bat-celibate for awhile. The shock of something so heinous as "pulling a Singer" would be too much to overcome right then and there... :D

Then I hope that The Dark Knight meets your approval. :))

Back onto topic; it could be a very crowded film. There are potentially four villains, Batman, Alfred, Fox, Bruce's GF and Gordon. I hope that all characters are given something to do and it doesn't become another Spider-Man 3. 8-)

New Joker Will Be More Realistic, Says Bale
Published by Brian Jacks on Thursday, June 28, 2007 at 12:01 pm.

With sealed lips being the mantra of the day on “The Dark Knight” set, info on the next edition of the “Batman” franchise is hard to come by. That’s why we were happy to get anything out of star Christian Bale, who confirmed to MTV News that Heath Ledger’s take on The Joker will be decidedly darker than previous versions of the iconic villain.

“I think I should let Heath give you the answer on all this,” Bale said, before stating that “certainly I think that we dig a little more than the other movies did.” That means that fans shouldn’t expect to see The Joker dancing to Prince, as Jack Nicholson did in Tim Burton’s 1989 film. “We recognize, of course, they are cartoon characters, [but] we try to ground them in somewhat more reality than the other movies.”

According to the “Rescue Dawn” actor, though, one thing’s for sure…clowns are scary. “There’s a word for it, isn’t there?” Bale asked of Coulrophobia, or an intense fear of clowns. “It’s a wonderful word. Most kids are terrified of the bloody things.”

“The Dark Knight” hits theaters in 2008. See our exclusive video of Batman’s new ride, the Batpod, here.

What is wrong with all of you? You think that Robin has to be camp? If Batman can be done in a realistic way, a la Batman Begins, so can Robin, Batgirl, etc.

I'd love to see Azrael so we can have a Knightfall movie.

I prefer the Jeph Loeb/Tim Sale stuff (minus Haunted Knight as I haven't read that yet), but Knightfall is still pretty amazing, and would make for an incredible movie.

True, but are they needed? Just because Robin and Batgirl won't be camp, doesn't mean that they should be added. I don't think they should be added as there are so many characters already; Batman, Bruce's GF, Alfred, Fox, Gordon and up to five villains. I think Robin and Batgirl will just take up space. ;)

Robin and Batgirl and an integral part of the Batman character. They make him more human and less of a machine. As long as they aren't syrupy sweet, I think they could really be beneficial to the story, if done right.

All I will say is that as a non-Comic Book fan, I won't miss them. Yes, if done properly, they could be great, but I think it goes against the whole idea of Batman being a reclusive billionaire who fights crime. ;)

I was extremely diappointed by how Robin and Batgirl were handled by Joel Schumacher :# If Nolan does decide to do Robin (I don't think he will), then Robin's origin story should be the movie...along with a single villain with perhaps a minor bad guy in a 'flunkie' role.

There is some arguable value in the Robin character as an element of redemption for Batman; proof that all is not lost---that, even in Gotham City, there is a future.

Batgirl is more challenging...but, if done faithfully---i.e., Jim Gordon's daughter---it's not impossible. However, in the hands of any lesser director, such a thing is as potentially disastrous as a thermonuclear device in the hands of a chimpanzee :(|) :o ;) ...as, unfortunately, was proven by the embarrassing Batman and Robin :(|)

I remain one of those comic book-movie fans who prefer fewer villains rather than an entire rogue's gallery showing up in the same film. Featuring too many heroes---and/or villains---has the potential of cluttering up the landscape (unless it's presented as an ensemble, as IMO the X-Men films did quite well).

I repeat my earlier thoughts on this discussion, Batman, Robin, Batgirl, two or three villians and a girlfriend (Vicki Vale) is too much character for one film to develop. What makes Batman interesting, to me at least, is the deep brooding character behind the mask. Loeffs idea on how Robin becomes Robin being one movie is fine. But, a Batman movie needs Batman as a main character fighting his personal demons and the bad guys. Not Batman as a side show surrounded by a half dozen other characters.

That's it, exactly. If Robin's story is told, it needs to be done (along with that of the villain of the piece), as a juxtaposition with Bruce Wayne's dark and lonely existence as a crime fighter.

There's more than enough story there for a movie, without bringing second and third villains to the circus...so to speak ;%

Spawn Cast in The Dark Knight
    Source: MTV July 3, 2007

MTV has confirmed that Spawn star Michael Jai White has landed a role in the Batman Begins sequel, The Dark Knight, which is currently filming in Chicago (spoiler ahead!).

"...the role of "Gamble" has officially gone to Michael Jai White, the muscular martial artist/stuntman/actor best known for roles in such films as "Spawn" and "Exit Wounds." Thomas and Roven also cleared up fan confusion over who, exactly, the baddie is, explaining that Gamble is one of several mob bosses attempting to take over Gotham's streets now that Carmine Falcone (Tom Wilkinson in the first 'Batman' flick) is out of the picture.

Not only am I not in law enforcement, but by the time of the shoot I'll be back in Loeff's neck of the woods beginning my junior year of college!

Drop me a PM if they are ever looking for Poli-Sci/Law students or Home Depot associates. :D

As Loeffs and I will be about 4 hours away from Chi-town when the scene is shot, I'm afraid Barry is our only hope! ;)

Hey guys, just thought I'd mention that I read two Batman comics today. The first was Hush Returns, which was mediocre at best an incomplete at worst. I also read Batman Superman Public Enemies, which was really good. Anyone read either of these?

Below is some information received from the Chicago Police Dept. concerning Batman filming this week. I also know some filming will take place on Upper and Lower Wacker drive, probably a chase scene. This location had been used in films before for chase scenes, most notably Blues Brothers.

Batman helicopter schedule for the week:

    Wednesday, July 11 - Friday, July 13th:
6:30 pm - 11:00 pm (midnight on Friday)

Helicopter flying over Wacker Drive from Harrison to Madison area

Saturday, July 12th: No helicopter filming planned

    Sunday, July 15th
    6:30 pm - 11:00 pm

Helicopter flying over the Chicago River in the vicinity of Lake and Orleans
    - This scene also involves a S.W.A.T. van launching from Lower Wacker - into the river between Lake and Orleans.

A new image of Heath Ledger as the J-man is making the rounds:

Still don't know how I feel about it. Ledger certainly looks grotesque, but I don't know that I'm getting a "Joker" vibe yet. There's still too much of "The Crow" about him. Also, according tocinematical and other sources, there's some news about Aaron Eckhart's role. Don't click the link or highlight the spoiler if you don't want it ruined for you.
Although he's been doing his best to keep quiet, MTV Movie News managed to obtain confirmation from Eckhart that he will be donning the Two Face costume at some point during The Dark Knight. He says, "I play Harvey Dent. Harvey Two-Face. They are both in the movie." He wouldn't go much further than that, but he did say he was looking forward to shooting a specific scene this October.

    Oooh, let's hope it's true!

Seriously, give the sidekicks the boot. Batman, as far as I'm concerned, works best as a loner.
