Die Another Day

I decided that tonight was a good night for a bond film, and I thought I would watch one of the more disliked bond films in the series, so I settled on this one. I figured I'd review it in the same vein as the Roger Moore films.
Die Another Day starts well, very well IMHO. This movie has a lot of promise. The PTS is exciting, and the torture behind the opening credits is brilliant. The trip to cuba and reactivation of a long dormant cell, plus the cameo of the Field Guide to Birds of the West Indies were very well done. I even liked the clinic.
Jinx, well, Jinx was not exactly a great bond girl. But so be it. Meeting M underground was way cool, as was the scene with all the old gadgets. I enjoyed the film immensely until Iceland.
The plot of this film is basically an update of the book Moonraker, and that's the problem. The non-military use of Icarus is laughably lame, making the whole premise of Graves as a good guy seem lame as well. Much has been written about the CGI and other fantasy elements of the whole Iceland setting, and I agree with most of it. Like the film moonraker, this movie is ruined by the second half.
Moneypenny's dream of James at the end was good for shock value, but wasn't funny and was a bit embarrassing.
I put this film in my bottom five where it belongs, but it isn't as bad as its reputation. To me this film is disappointing because it had the elements to be so good, and it just didn't all come together like it should have.
I really liked Brosnan as bond in all four films. Wish he had done another before we hit a series reset with Casino Royale.

My likes:
A worthy PTS addition to the Bond canon.
A game attempt by the film makers to add something new to Bond a la OHMSS and LTK (Bond gets captured and adopts a Robinson Crusoe look after a long spell in prison), as well as injecting some seriousness into the story.
The Ice Palace in Iceland
Rosamund Pike
Really when you think about it Die Another Day has all the elements expected of a Bond movie, and if you see past the nostalgia and (MARGINAL) CGI and remember it is a Bond movie after all, it really is not too bad. {[]
