ASP9mm - I would like to have seen that P7 conversion, I had a P7 and remember just how very hard the steel was on them. I was never able to warm up to the cocking mechanism and sold it to a pal who shot it for many years with good results before he let go of it. I thought the polygonal rifling was the best feature of the pistol.

So to keep this on topic "If you were a double oh, where could you find a guttersnipe?"

I have no idea where you could pick up a Guttersnipe now. They did make huge numbers of them, and not just to fit S&W's, but BHP's 1911's etc. Occasionally they surface on Ebay. You should drop Donald Grant a PM, he may be able to help you out.

Thanks for all the replies so far. Good food for thought. In addition to the Glock I like the current Smith and Wesson Titanium airweight.
With standard velocity .38 soecial rounds the recoil is more than manageable. Bond was given a Smith and Wesson Centennial Airweight in Dr. No.(novel) I think the Airweight would make a fine backup to the Glock and would be an excellent choice for a car gun since revolvers don't automatically eject its brass. Who needs that bouncing around in the close confines of a car?

I think it is fascinating that Boothroyd's original pick for the "oo" was the Smith & Wesson Centennial Airweight. Aside from being used by John Steed in some of the early "Avengers" the revolver never really recieved the recognition it was due. It was only a couple of years old when Boothroyd recommended it, but when Fleming picked the PPK it was reduced to Bond trivia.

The original Centennials died a quiet death in 1974, but were brought back and re-discovered in the 1990's. Now they are considered by many experts the finest of all small .38 revolvers. This year Smith & Wesson is even making a special run of Centennials in their original form. If Fleming's oo7 were still with us and forced to ditch the PPK, that old Centennial would serve him well today!

P.S. Shooting a pistol inside a car is a great way to go deaf!!! If a "oo" tries that he better have a real good silencer or a set of ear plugs...ouch!

Well I have always believed in tradition so I would go with a PPK as my conceled carry and a P99 as my primary. I would however chose the .380 model with an extended eight shot magazine, to give it an edge in a
major fire fight. Also I would get a P99 chambered for the .40 caliber round rather than 9mm for better stopping power.

If those were not an option than I would go for a H&K SOCOM as made famous in the Metal Gear Solid video game series. It has a 12 round magazine of .45 caliber ammo and can be fitted with a silencer and laser sight. It has many of the same features of the USP, the only real drawbacks are the size and weight, but it was a proven weapon in the US military special forces for several years.

For my back up weapon I would use either the Walther P99C or the newer PPS which is the heir apperent to the PPK and PPK/S. Both pistols are disigned with many of the same features of the larger P99 the PPS is chambered in 9mm with either
a six, seven, or eight round magazine, and is only nine inchs wide for better concelment.

If I were a Double-0, I don't think I'd be able to carry only one weapon...In addition, can anyone tell me if a Sig P229 would be a good choice? I ask this because I have an airsoft model and think that if I were to use the real thing it would feel better to me. again just speculation.

A Sig P229 would definitely be my choice. Although the sear reset is slightly longer than I care for, the P229 is compact, accurate, and reliable; and it carries a high-capacity magazine in 9mm, .40 S&W, or .357 SIG, whichever the user prefers.

I also agree, if the circumstances allowed for it, I'd carry a backup weapon also. Maybe a GLOCK 30 which also has a large capacity magazine for a pistol its size and large .45 ACP caliber. And if my attire didn't allow for the Sig, the GLOCK might be a better, more concealable choice also.

I know very little about handguns, but here it goes:

H&K PPS for "civilian" work and FN FiveSeven for combat missions with little need for consealment (or perhaps the H & K pistol with the same calibre as their MP7?)

This is really subjective as personal preference is what counts. An assassination/covert weapon needs to be small and concealable. It should be low power/small calibre to allow for near-silence when used with a sound moderator. The ammunition is what's important, to compensate for the small calibre. Many custom made modifications are out there on the civilian market alone.
As for a combat/enforcement weapon the list is endless and down to personal preference. Many pistols mentioned here are 2 - 2 1/2 lb in weight so utterly useless for concealed use under a tailored tuxedo but fine for storming a building with a leg holster rig.

My choices would be something like:
    1) Ruger mk 1/Beretta Jetfire .22 with sound moderator. Subsonic velocity hollow-point soft lead, magnesium or mercury filled and topped with melted wax. If it has to be done in cold blood, this is a sufficient start.
    2) ASP 9mm/Baby Glock/Beretta 84FS/Walther PPS for concealled yet sufficient firepower .
    3) Glock 10mm/.45GAP/H&K USP .45/ SIG .357 for overt work.

Not previously mentioned are revolvers which although usually limited to six rounds can be fettled to fire equally as fast, and offer near 100% reliability as well as full power calibres such as .357 magnum/.44 magnum/.45 Long. There is also an extra confidence gained from knowing you won't suffer a feeding stoppage in a firefight.

A good point, most of the guns described are too large for effective concealment under tailored clothing. Maybe instead of a GLOCK, a Kahr K9 or PM9 which are much flatter and lighter, would be a better choice.

Camille's 9mm Rohrbaugh R9S also looks like a good compromise between compact size and firepower.

I heard that there are at least three police departments in the states (I'm sure Seattle is one) going over to the Colt .45 1911 (or copies) because of its thin profile for off duty/undercover concealment and heavy stopping power. I found this interesting because good though all these modern combat pistols are, they are literally as thick as a brick, and now an almost 100 year-old design has found favour once again. I always loved the 1911, and when you think about it, 7/8 bullets should be enough for any skilled user. Many law enforcement agencies are limited to 10 rd magazines anyway. Also, many US special forces continued to use the 1911 long after the beretta 92/M9 replaced it, just like the SAS/SBS used and still use H & K's and M16 derevitives long after the British army brought out the SA80. This action always speaks for itself.

Danjaq - that pistol looks great. Never came across it before, but found a link showing the company boss demonstrating it. It looks really concealable and in full 9mm is plenty for 007.

My sidearm would be Melina Havelocks crossbow :))

Or laser pistols from Moonraker B-)

No, no... the real piece, i'd choose maybe Glock 17 with a silencer,

it's perhaps the best handweapon, that i've used on the shooting range, without a silencer of course. Glock also works fine

underwater and it doesn't get jammed as often as some of it's fellow 9mm handguns.

.50AE Desert Eagle is too damn heavy, clumsy and it only takes 7 in the mag and 1 in the pipe.

Colt .45 marine issue would also be a great sidearm, when things get real nasty :D But in someway, i just cannot see it

for a good choice for covert ops.

As an assault rifle, i wouldn't choose H&K MP-5 or similar. I'd take RK-62 Assault rifle 7.62mm made in Finland, it's very

accurate and reliable weapon with 30 rounds in the mag. It's a standard issue of Finnish army and there are few

modifications of this long range assault rifle.

    Cheers,

    Some good choices Teppo!

If I were planning a commando assault ala OHMSS, I'd stock up on some more serious firepower as well.

For a sidearm, I'd go for the Sig Sauer P229 in .357 SIG and the GLOCK 30 in .45 as a backup I recommended in the earlier post.

For a sub gun, I'd go for an FN-P90 ala TWINE. It's compact with its bullpup design, it's accurate with a solid stock, and with its 50-round magazines in 5.7mm rounds, it's good against body armor.

What are some choices other double-0s around here might choose before going on a commando raid?
  • thesecretagentthesecretagent CornwallPosts: 2,151MI6 Agent
    Commando raid:
Silenced Beretta 84fs - hollow points
    Glock 10mm
Smith & Wesson snub .38 (last resort back-up)
    MP5/10 10mm
    M4 with 203mm grenade launcher
    Gerber boot dagger
