Turnbull & Asser

For those that purchased the shirt from Turnbull & Asser online and live in the US how, if you did, did you do it? I don't see how they can ship to the US if when you attempt to register it doesn't allow you to put in the US as a country.

There is a T and A store in New York, and I believe one in LA but I could be wrong. I didn't buy the shirt, but I'd try contacting the stores in the US.

Yes, you can call the store in NYC as they have plenty of sizes left....you probably will have to get the shirt taken in a bit as the fit on it is traditional instead of fitted.

While we are on the topic of T&A, for those of you who have these shirts as part of your wardrobe where do you get them, online or at the store in London or NYC? Also has anyone had these made bespoke and how much does that cost?
  • Asp9mmAsp9mm Over the Hills and Far Away.Posts: 7,535MI6 Agent
Get them direct instore if you want bespoke. They are around £900 for six shirts. You can buy them online and in their stores pre-made (£120), but for a little extra have them made to fit you. If you are a regular, you do get discount as well, so it is well worth it, plus they last for years.

If you wear large watches, Panerai, Breitling etc. Bespoke is definately the way to go.

Rather than starting a new topic, I thought I'd revive this one:

Just wanted to congratulate Mantis on his new 'Visit to T&A' article in the features section. Wonderfully evocative and a treat for those who intend, or for those who aspire to visit.

And since you're a regular traveller David, any chance of getting over to the London branch in Jermyn Street? They're a bit less indulgent of all things Bond-related (I've known U.S. customers who've found them a bit stuffy), but you can still catch a few gems and tit-bits in their off-guard moments.

I will be heading over to the UK in February, and of course would like to get together with all my Bond associates at the appropriate places! So yes!

Excellent, it's a pity Scotts has turned into a trendy fish bar as that would've been the perfect meeting place. God I miss it :(

    mantis,

was wondering, were you (or anyone else) able to confirm that T&A produced the suit dress shirts in addition to the tuxedo shirt?

    thanks
  • The Bond ExperienceThe Bond Experience Newtown, PAPosts: 5,490Quartermasters
BTW, T&A did not make the Goldeneye ties....the tie I saw there was actually from Tomorrow Never Dies....

As far as the suit shirt(s) I had one gent tell me they didn't do the striped one but did do the one seen at the end of the film...THEN Felix told me they only did the Tux shirt....so in my book, I would say the tux shirt is the only sure thing.
  • ufboy73ufboy73 usaPosts: 103MI6 Agent
mantis - thanks. i guess that implies the most likely maker to be brioni. it seems strange that they wouldnt use T&A for all the shirts (particularly since they went with them for one shirt - i.e. if one why not all) but i think brioni did the shirts for the latter brosnan movies so maybe they were already trending away from T&A. i think im actually going to do some mtm shirts with T&A (though a bond connection would have been a nice bonus :)) i find brioni mtm shirt prices to be somewhat excessive.

one other followup mantis - did they have the tie from TND that brosnan wears when meeting Q and getting the 7 series BMW? i think its sort of a copper/brown colored based tie with a subtle pattern. he wore it with a camelhair colored overcoat, i believe. im pretty sure i saw another TND tie at T&A at one point - the one that is worn when he breaks into carver's newspaper facility and finds terri hatcher's character back in his hotel room already dead.
  • The Bond ExperienceThe Bond Experience Newtown, PAPosts: 5,490Quartermasters
They had the Carver Newspaper facility tie, the DAD blue circle tie and the TWINE Q-Boat tie.

    Great article!

Mantis, how much are the Bond reissued ties, and are they different in price from most of T&A's regular collection?
  • DEVONKNIGHTDEVONKNIGHT CanadaPosts: 100MI6 Agent
Beat me to the punch! I was just going to ask that too. I was under the assumption these ties were specifically designed for the Bond movies and not off the rack ones. I also wasn't aware that they were for sale to the general public. I guess I'm wrong on that.

Wonderful article Mantis, I must admit to being slightly envious.
I know that you visited the NYC store and I presume that the London store would provide the same service but did having the shirt taylored cost a great deal more. As something who finds getting shirts to fit nicely so difficult it may be an option I may look at.
I bought a couple of Gieves & Hawkes own brand shirts and they never offered me a tayloring service. Any advice would be hugely appreciated {[]{[]

Turnbull & Asser Jermyn St are great and offer the same impeccable service. There is only one person in there though who is enthusiastic about Bond. If you mention it to anyone else, then you will notice a subtle shift in attitude and a slight tilting of the head as they look down on you. I have had the majority of my shirts and ties from them since 1989, but I would never ever walk into the store wearing a Bond tie again, it was most uncomfortable and commented upon while I was there. Apart from that, they are very helpful. The bespoke tailoring section is just around the corner from the main shop.

Just goes to show how attitudes differ in these circles from the same company in two differing continents.

The best way to deal with the staff on a visit to Turnbull and Asser is to treat them like dirt.

They appreciate that kind superiority from their customers. Otherwise, they - the staff - takeover.

Not very mature. But I think it part of the age old tradition of T & A.

WOW...well, I can tell you the NYC staff could not have been more gracious...also received the following from their head of PR:

    From: "Rowland Lowe-MacKenzie" <Rowland.Lowe-MacKenzie@turnbullandasser.co.uk>
    To: <dzaritsky@msn.com>
Subject: Thank you from Turnbull & Asser

    Dear David,

Many thanks for your kind article. We have found your article on the web and thoroughly enjoyed reading it. As a Bond fan myself it resonated with me. Working with Barbra Broccoli (who is absolutely charming and a delight) and the rest of the EON “crew” as well as Daniel Craig, was a great privilege. We had great fun assisting Lindy Hemming (costume director) with the shirts and ties/bow ties for the film. Being invited to the premier was one of my highlights last year, along with the Christmas card from Daniel. From my perspective, it is a huge privilege to be working for a company with such a long history/association with one of the “greatest” fictional characters of the film screen.

Do keep in contact and if I can be of any assistance, please do not hesitate to e-mail or phone and I will do all to help.

    With kind regards,

    Rowland Lowe-MacKenzie,

    Public Relations Liaison,

    Turnbull & Asser.

    Dave

Perhaps this guy would be gracious enough to supply you with DETAILS of the shirts and ties they made for CR....

Oh, and to ensure that his shop staff are more knowledgeable on the subject!

    Just small points!
  • NightshooterNightshooter In bed with SolitairePosts: 2,917MI6 Agent
I think the guy seems pretty nice as it is, I don't think yelling at him to be more knowledgeable about Bond is necessary. 8-)

If you mean my putting DETAILS in caps, sorry; I'm not desperately computer literate - and okay, I belief caps in computer speak somehow indicates shouting!? - but I was more after emphasis that info should be provided than giving the guy a *******ing!!!
  • ufboy73ufboy73 usaPosts: 103MI6 Agent
additional details from him on the specifics of shirts and ties made for casino royale WOULD be quite helpful!:)

I think that these questions have already been answered some time back. T&A have told us that they only made the dress shirt and bow tie. The other formal shirts were supplied by Brioni. It does seem though, according to Mantis' article, that a T&A employee did ongoing alterations on set (and presumably off set too) to some of the other shirts supplied for Craig.

actually, i had thought that there had been conflicting reports about the shirts. hemming stated that T&A produced the shirts and i believed it was a T&A salesperson that stated they did not. Knowing the misinformation (not necessarily intended) that salespeople often give out i was thinking a more senior/corporate level person would be in a better position to either corroborate or deny hemming's assertion.
