Last Event Attended

Same rules as the 'Last film seen' thread however this thread is about non-Bond related events such as concerts, stage plays/musicals, sporting events or any other event that isn't related to Bond but also isn't a film.

I recently saw a production of The Phantom of the Opera starring the incomparable Anthony Warlow. I had previous seen Phantom before (I believe twice) however this was the first time I saw it with Warlow, and I had a really good time. Phantom isn't my favourite musical and I don't in fact consider it to be a great musical but I nonetheless very much enjoyed the singing, particularly by Warlow and the female lead. Warlow is truly magnificent, and for him alone, I would recommend it to anybody who is in *Melbourne (or will be there in the near future.)

*It will probably head to Sydney as well.

In July, my wife and I saw "Inherit the Wind" on Broadway, starring Christopher Plummer and Brian Dennehy. Great stuff.

On a side note...Omigod omigod, Dan changed his avatar! :o Shocking, positively shocking. It will take some getting used to, but a great choice indeed, Dan. {[] Need more Emma around here! :x

My wife and I went to watch the Scissor Sisters at the MEN Arena last month. Fifth time we've seen them and they were still stunning ! I don't think I've ever seen a band put so much effort into a gig - roll on the next time !

I recently went the MLB All-Star fan fest held at the Moscone Center West in San Francisco. Lot's of cool baseball stuff, including this years World Series trophy. After I left that event, I headed over to AT&T park and walked around the outside of the place during the Home Run derby. I didn't stay long, but will say I've never seen McCovey Cove so crowded. Wow. Have some cool photos from both events.

I took my daughter to see Wicked yesterday. I went not knowing what to expect and thoroughly enjoyed it. It is one of those shows which the critics initially panned but the audience love and I can see why. My daughter was totally engrossed and it was really very humorous which surprised me. Some good, scary ( if your 10yrs old ) moments as well.

I rememeber seeing it when i was in grade 2 (way back when I was 6) and it had a lasting impact on me.

Nice! B-) I'm a pretty big fan of 80s rock, and Styx has a few great toons as well. I don't really care for foreigner, however.

I went to the Cleveland Indians (My team) vs. Chicago Whitesox on Friday night. It was the best Indians game I've ever been to. They were losing 5-0 and came back late to win 8-5! It was a very exciting and dramatic finish. For those who follow baseball they are in front of the Detroit Tigers for first place.

Saw the Moody Blues in concert a few weeks ago. They were great. They seem to get better with age, both vocally and otherwise.

I'm jelous of all you guys going to see shows, especially those of you seeing Phantom. I've seen it twice on stage (once on Broadway, and once in Denver) and I'd LOVE to see it again. It's my most favorite show EVER..it's had a HUGE impact on my life. Let me know how the shows are, will you? thanks...

Well, to lower the intellectual and artistic tone of this thread... :v ;%

I took Loeff Jr and Loeff III to a WWE professional wrestling event tonight, at the local convention center. The Main Event was Batista vs The Great Khali---a 7'3" monster whom I would not be at all surprised to see Bond going up against some time in the future :)) "Nature Boy" Ric Flair---an 'old school' hero/baddie from my youth, was supposed to be there...and wasn't :#

Still, a good time was had by all B-) A guilty pleasure which I've long outgrown...with occasional relapses :(|)

About a week back, I caught the Heaven And Hell tour at the St. Pete Ice Palace, home of the Tampa Bay Lightning. Dio and the boys from Sabbath sounded great.

Alice Cooper and Queensryche were also there. But the Coopman put on a hell of a show. In my opinion, the highlight of the evening :)

I got to see Marvin Hamlisch perform live on my college campus on September 14th.

The music was terrific! I hadn't heard a lot of his non-Bond stuff before this. Nevertheless, it brought a smile to my face when a portion of "Nobody Does It Better" appeared during a medley of his "Academy Award Losers."

In-between pieces, Mr. Hamlisch told stories and told jokes. He is actually a really funny guy! The audience also got a chance to ask him questions, which he gladly answered.

All in all it was a great event!

I had asked Loeffelholz to join me for this one, but unfortunately he had to work. :#

However, Jethro Tull is coming to town on October 15th. If the tickets are not sold out, we both may very well go to this one... ;)

Aberdeen V Dnipro in the UEFA cup. Good game but it ended 0-0, which means it's going to be extremely difficult for my team to qualify for the next round.

Attended two events in the past week. First event was the last game Barry Bonds will play as a SF Giant. Even though the Giants lost, it was a cool game. I had standing room only tickets, so I moved around SBC. Took losts of pics to.

Second event was this past Saturday night. I attended the Dave Matthews Band concert at the Shoreline Amphitheater (Mountain View, CA). It was a cool concert. They played for almost three hours. They usually play a two night stand, but have a shortened tour this summer. Hopefully DMB will get back in the studio, cut an album and have an extended tour next summer.

Any one else attend any events lately?

I'm backdating this, but it was Prince's last gig at the O2 arena.

I was more impressed with the venue than the gig really. It was in the round, so the stage was like that of a boxing canvass, unusual for the UK. Sadly, the stage was shaped like Prince's squiggle, with the round end facing us, and he rarely stood there.

Too many funky things at the beginning, and then for an encore he delved into his hit collection doing one or 2 mins of stuff like Raspberry Beret. "Hey, I know you like that one!" exclaimed the Purple One. Well yes mate, so why not play more than a minute of it on your piano!

He did play some full length classics like Sign of Times, Cream, When Doves Cry (a bit off key) but also Nothing Compares 2 U (more Sinead's number, I don't like his bombastic version even if he wrote it) and I Feel For You (again, I prefer Chaka Khan's version, though he wrote it).

The venue is very uplifting, you come out at Greenwich North or something and you're right on the dome. But as I'm sure many of you know, the O2 is not the entire Dome, just inside part of it. And it can take a good 10 mins to get to your section. The rest is given over to a Vegas style shopping mall, not unpleasant or anything, it felt exotically American (well,, for a Londoner).

It would be cool to get a boat back to central London, but perhaps the reason for the many encores at Prince was to stagger the crowds so they didn't swamp the Tube, which was okay as it turned out.

Is there anything about the concert that you liked at all? :))

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, last night at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Seeing Bruce in greater NY (especially in New Jersey) is really interesting. You can't believe how many 40-somethings I know who are already on their 7th or 8th show this tour, and have seen him upwards of 60 times over the years. Kind of like me with Goldfinger. :D

Anyway, the show was a typically high-energy affair, with The Boss in fine form and backed by an E Street Band that produces a true wall of sound (sometimes there were five guitars). Some other observations:
-- Not often these days that I go to a concert in which the average audience member is older than I am. This was one of those cases.
-- It was also the whitest audience ever. I think Clarence Clemons was the only black man in the building! :)) (BTW, to this day, no one, including Bruce, gets more applause than Clarence.)
-- A little shorter show than the old days, but Bruce still played for two and a half hours.
-- Set list was a great mix of old and new. The new album plays really well live, but we also got classics like "Promised Land", "She's The One", "Dancing In The Dark", "Badlands", "Born To Run" and "Jungleland", as well as a fabulous up-tempo rendition of "Reason To Believe".

He's not the young, restless poet singing about redemption anymore, but Bruce Springsteen is still relevant and still a blast to see play.

You know, most gatherings I go to are mostly white. I mean, pan across a football crowd and you surely hardly see any black faces, even though of course many in the team are black. Is this a fair cultural observation?

Last weekend a friend and fellow Floydian and I attended the Australian Pink Floyd Show at the E Center in Salt Lake City, UT. All I can say is, if you are a Pink Floyd fan, YOU MUST SEE THIS SHOW! It was by far the best and most jaw dropping concert I've ever been to. The light show was fantastic and the actual music wasn't too shabby either. No joke, listening to this band was just like listening to Pink Floyd in their prime. They were nothing short of sensational! Again, all Floydians must see the Australian Pink Floyd Show. This concert will change your life!!!
