Perhaps Jeremy Renner. I loved his work in the Hurt Locker and SWAT.
It's funny that you should mention Renner, Mishkin because when I saw The Hurt Locker, I was troubled by where I had seen him before. After about an hour I realised that it wasn't what I had seen him in before but rather who he reminded me of: Daniel Craig!
never a american bond. if i recall burt reynolds, sam neil and james brolin were once considered. i know sam neil is australian tho quite relieved none of the above got the part
I don't care where an actor is from as long as they fit the part and get the English accent down. I must admit I'd prefer an English actor too though – A perfect example of a bad accent is Jason Statham in the Transporter – he's trying to do an American accent and it's truly appalling.
Once Craig is finished with Bond, as long as it's 5 years plus in the future. I'd like to see Henry Cavill have a shot.
Things I hate:

2. Irony.
3. Lists.

Me too and in 5 years Henry will be 32 the perfect age to take up the mantle and get a good 6 0r 7 movies before he even starts to look past it.
Although I personnely wouldnt mind him taking over earlier.
With you there. I'm not saying an American is incapable---IMO, Robert Downey Jr played a serviceable Brit in Sherlock Holmes, although generally it's Brits who do Americans better than vice versa---but there's already sufficient suspension of disbelief called for with Bond. I'd just prefer the fundamentals remain authentically covered.

Didn't mean to have a stab at your R.D. idea DaltonFan1, but just don't see it. As for my ideas: recent new Bonds have been a 'surpise' to me. I didn't know Brozza before, and had only seen Craig in Road to Perdition (not thinking of him as Bond). Both choices worked out brilliantly though, so I'm sure the producers will make the right choice again when time is due. Till then, Craig's got my full support.
I think a better question would be "Who should star in a Bond-like American franchise?" if we were to see a US agent in some comparable style franchise, but I don't think there should ever really be an American Bond or a blatant American rip off of the Bond series.
If they did a remake of the Matt Helm movies, I think Will Smith would be perfect. That's if they went for the light hearted approach. For the man from Uncle why not, Cillian Murphy as Illya Kuryakin and for Napoleon Solo, Benedict Cumberbatch.

The only way I could a possibly accept an American in the role of Bond would be if (1) the actor is a complete unknown and (2) he has an impeccable English accent.
Just an observation not an opinion: Funny how it's accepted for Brits, Aussies, etc to play American charactors (even iconic ones) but it's still taboo (at least around these parts) for an American or other non UK actor to play Bond. Now for an opinion: I personally would have no problem with an American actor playing Bond if he could pull off a perfect British accent and was otherwise "perfect" for the role. That being said, as long as there are British actors out there who fit the bill there's no real reason to cast anyone else and needlessly ruffle any feathers (there was enough backlash with a blond Bond).
I would hope they would pick the Best actor for the part, American or otherwise. like others have said, so loing as he sounds British and looks good in a Tux, I'd be happy.

Don't know if he has already been mentioned, but what about Philip Winchester. Been watching him in Strikeback: Project Dawn and didn't realise at first that he is American.

he has the look but, how would he fare in action sequences?

So which of Moore and Craig do you prefer then, the others all being exempted?

His age is really the only downside you can come up with ?
Sorry, but I don't see it. Not by a long shot.
I have no suggestions either.
i think he'd bring a different element, lol.
