It seems that most of you like Winehouse to sing the new Bond theme. Personally, I dislike her, but I'll admit that's mainly because of her looks and her personality. The only song of hers that I have listened to is "Rehab" and I absolutely hated it. Never again!
However, while I'm not overly keen on hearing Winehouse do a Bond theme, I don't really have a choice in the matter. If she does do it, and if she is indeed as talented as some of you are making her out to be, then I might give her another chance. As far as I'm concerned, in the diva stakes, no one comes close to Dame Shirley Bassey.
I think Supreme Beings of Leisure would do a good job. They have several tunes from their 3 CD's that have the distinct Bond touch.
Dominic Greene - "James Bond 007, License to Kill or be killed I believe No? An instrument of her Majesties Secret Service. You are...how you say the spy that never sleeps. Tell me Mr.Bond what exactly is your business with me?"
The consensus seems to be; if it's a woman, it has to be a diva. The singer has to possess a fabulous, amazing voice, but must also carry that je ne sais qua which pushes her over into diva. In the 60s, this was easy; throw a rock in the Top of the Pops studio, and it was likely to hit Shirley, Dusty, Petula, Dionne - great names, great voices, great divas. But styles have changed, so I think a run down of the main diva contenders could be useful.
Amy Winehouse
Pros: THAT VOICE. Phenomenally talented.
Cons: More tracks on her arm than the West Coast Main Line. Lack of hairbrush dents essential diva fabulousness rating.
Joss Stone
Pros: good, soulful voice. Popular on both sides of the Atlantic.
Cons: ....sorry, did you say something? Someone said Joss Stone, and I fell asleep. Has adopted odd Mid-Atlantic voice of late.
Diana Krall
Pros: Mellow, smooth voice.
Cons: Yawn again. Is married to Elvis Costello, and frankly, if you're going to have someone from that household, why not go with the really talented side?
Leona Lewis
Pros: Excellent, strong vocal talents.
Cons: America says, who?
Jennifer Hudson
Pros: Excellent, strong vocal talents.
Cons: Europe says, who?
Mariah Carey
Pros: Can hit a strong note from 1000 paces. Extreme diva.
Cons: Unable to maintain said note for more than three milliseconds without romping up and down a scale. Extreme diva means "barking mad". Doesn't do stairs.
Whitney Houston
Pros: Excellent singing voice. Long established talent. Dionne Warwick's niece, thereby restoring family pride after Auntie was dumped for Mr Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.
Cons: Career in the dumper. "Troubled", x10.
Bjork
Pros: Distinctive. Fashionable. Unique.
Cons: "I'm sorry, Bjork is unable to perform your song; she's riding a three legged incubator through the world of pixie dust, with only her dwarf friend Zanzibar to hold her magical worm gin."
Celine Dion
Pros: Good form on movie theme tunes. Still popular.
Cons: Still popular among women of a certain age, not achingly trendy target audience. Botoxed face may spontaneously rupture when she tries to sing the "Q" sound.
Alison Goldfrapp
Pros: Fashionable. Talented.
Cons: Barmy.
Beyonce
Pros: Huge fan base. Huge voice. Huge sex appeal.
Cons: Has already done Austin Powers. May insist on her mother designing her outfit in the video. Apparently very nice, and therefore not DIVA enough.
Britney Spears
Pros: a modern icon of popular music.
Cons: Where do you start?
Christina Aguilera
Pros: Best set of pipes in pop. Not Dirrty anymore...
Cons: ...because now she thinks she's Vera Lynn, the Forces Sweetheart. Just given birth so probably not keen on getting back in the studio for a bit. Would make Britney feel even worse than she already does.
Natasha Bedingfield
**** OFF.
Dame Shirley Bassey
Pros: She is The Voice of Bond. Has The Range. Is the Ultimate Diva. Recently reignited her career through the unique one-two of a Marks & Spencers advert and wearing wellington boots at Glastonbury.
Cons: There are no cons. THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE.
I come from distant Finland and my opinion is that HIM could be a very great choice to sing the Bond title. Of course I like HIM because it's finnish band but HIM songs style is also very rare and little "classical." Their music could be a good choice to make totally new, amazing Bond music -style.
Pros: She is The Voice of Bond. Has The Range. Is the Ultimate Diva. Recently reignited her career through the unique one-two of a Marks & Spencers advert and wearing wellington boots at Glastonbury. quote]
Cons:
Who? says everyone under 40 who isn't a big bond fan. She was better in the 60's , says those who know who she is.
Pros: Huge fan base. Huge voice. Huge sex appeal.
Cons: Has already done Austin Powers. May insist on her mother designing her outfit in the video. Apparently very nice, and therefore not DIVA enough.
You make some good points, but there are times I feel you are wrong. About the Austin Powers link, I don't think Beyonce is strongly accosiated with AP. Liz hurley and to some extent Heather Graham are, but like Michael Caine she has made such a huge mark in other venues, so I think using her talents in a Bond film would work.
Few or no young singers are more diva than Beyonce, I think very few people would disagree.
She has a very perfect image, yes, but she has shown enough signs of failability to pas as a human being. Why, she has even been drunk in public once or twise!
I was originally in the Sting camp but I think the Beyonce suggestion could be interesting.
I know Amy Winehouse just swept though the Grammys and has been a popular vote but I think she carrys a lot of baggage. I would like to think that the producers would take this under consideration. I mean...I think we can all agree that she is not exactly a role model for the youth of today. I'm in my early 40's but I started to get into Bondom between the ages of 8 and 12. Keeping in mind that the franchise is now working on that next generation of Bond fans I just don't think Amy Winehouse would be a socially responsible choice. I would think they may want to keep their distance from her.
So my two cents is that out of all of the female suggestions thus far I would go for Beyonce first with Diana Krall second.
As far as Winehouse goes I would invoke the spirit of Dennis Miller when I say that Dan Tanna never let Binzer drive the T-Bird.
I don't understand where "role model" came into the job description for "person who sings Bond theme". Amy Winehouse is stupendously talented; I don't understand what her private life has to do with her suitability for the role. Sheryl Crow is a devoted eco-warrior, famously urging the planet to use only one piece of toilet paper; does that excuse the fact that she couldn't hit the high notes in Tomorrow Never Dies? No. It just means that when she performs it in concert, she also smells of bran. Excluding someone for substance abuse would rule out Sir Paul McCartney (holder of a drug conviction) - should we repeal Live and Let Die immediately and get the song covered by Moby, quick?
Kids between 8 and 12 who went to see Casino Royale saw a hero who murdered and assaulted people without remorse, slept with married women, made filthy jokes, gambled with other people's money and broke into other people's houses. If a kid can handle all that, they can handle listening to a three minute song performed by someone who has taken some scag. If they can't, they shouldn't be watching the film in the first place.
I understand where you're coming from I just think Winehouse is way to screwed up...not as screwed up as Britney Spears but screwed up nonetheless. I guess my inability to stomach her influenced my post on this thread...I'm just not feelin' her brother.

Why would you want to feel her brother?

I think Amy Winehouse will prove just too controversial for the producers, even though her voice and singing style is perfect for Bond.
As an alternative, how about Duffy?
Her debut single, mercy, is fantastic. Her album very 1960s, rather reminiscent of a 21st century Dusty Springfield. I think her vocals over a huge brass piece with a strong bass line would be fantastic.
Beyonce Knowles. Beyonce Knowles. Beyonce Knowles..... etc.
Sorry, can't comply! Partly because Beyonce is talented and incredibly hot, partly because I'm very immature.
Methinks the up and coming Adele (Chasing Pavements) would be better suited to director Marc Forster's downbeat style. Amy WH seems a bit too ballsy, unless you subscribe to the view that she could liven things up a bit.
MI6.com are going with the notion that they're ahem, chasing Adele. It's early days though, and just another rumour really.
My first choice would be Amy Winehouse. Bjork would be second. As I was thinking about this I had gotten Rick Rolled, but as I had cringed with disdain, I realized Rick Astley might not be bad. He is kind of like a neo Tom Jones. It has been a long time since we had a man do a Bond theme that wasn't a "Rocker".
I still think Muse would be excellent! Not only are they amazing singers they compose their stuff too!
What counts is what the heroine provokes, or rather what she represents. She is the one, or rather the love or fear she inspires in the hero , or else the concern he feels for her, who makes him act the way he does.

no way to amy wine house she looks like a matted dirty hobbo tramp. who really does look as if she need a wash ... you actually get a sence of what she smells like just looking at a photo ... I am acually feeling a little itchy thinking about her ....
My top 3 to sing the QoS theme are
Amy Mc Donald
KT Tunstall
or
The Killers ....
the red hot chillies could surprise many and do a great Bond theme the video would be insane Lol...
can u imagine there mix with the style of Bond ...

I'd go with Amy or Christina ... I think they're the only two that could deliver ( though Amy might need Mark Ronson in tow to hold her up)

I've never heard of Duffy. But that doesn't mean anything. Maybe someone else here in the U.S. has.
