PS2 or Xbox?

I'm deciding whether to get a PS2 or Xbox for christmas and need some opinions!

Which is better for graphics etc?

And the games I will mostly use for the console are "racing" games.

I assume you mean the xbox 360, in which case it is no contest, the xbox 360. Others (Tony especially) are better qualified to give specifics but I have both in my household and the xbox graphics are far superior. My kids never play the PS2 anymore, the games appear old fashion compared to the xbox 360. As far as games, the xbox is the winner there too. The best and most popular games are all on Xbox right now as that has become the game developers choice for development.

The PS3 has improved graphics over the PS2, but the game choice is limited. The xbox also has a great online set up which is superior to anything PS3 related.

Good luch with whatever you choose.

Ps2 hands down, there are a lot more games and the games tend to be better imo.

If you mean 360 or ps3 then it's hard to say. Look at the games currently available for each system and choose whichever system has the games you prefer.

Personally I went for the PS3, but thats just me

I hope this doesn't turn in to a 360 vs PS3 flame war

    :)

If you're looking for good graphics and racing games then the Xbox 360 is probably your best bet.

First of all, the 360 is capable of very high resolution graphics and can display them on either a standard television or the newer high-definition TV's. All Xbox 360 games can run in widescreen mode and support Dolby Digital surround sound. So on specs alone the 360 is the superior console. As far as racing games go, the 360 already has some very good titles: Project Gotham Racing 3 and Project Gotham Racing 4 are great arcade style racing games with a focus on stylish racing and easy to pick up controls. If you prefer a more realistic driving game, then Forza Motorsport 2 is a true driving simulator with amazing graphics and a really wide selection of cars. If you want outrageous racing, full of crashes and stunts, then you can look at Burnout: Revenge. That's just off the top of my head, there are plenty other of racing games available with both cars and motorcycles.

The PS3 is a very powerful console but it has proven to be very hard to program for. Only the best development houses have been able to get out quality games for it. As far as racing games go, the only one to stand out so far is F1, a Formula 1 racing game. There are some other racers like Sega's Full Auto which have gotten only mixed reviews. Going forward, the next Gran Tourismo game looks really good but it will be months yet before it is released.

The PS2 is a very good system with literally hundreds of games. It's also a 10 year old console so the technology is very dated and, compared to newer hardware, the visuals are lacking. You'll find plenty of games and relatively low prices but they'll never look as good as what you can get on the 360 or the PS3.

As such, if you want to get a console today, I'd say the Xbox 360 is the best combination of value and power. All just my opinion of course.

The PS is better in the term of EXTREME hardcore gamers, but if you're not, get an XBox.

I was faced with this dilemma and I chose the Xbox360 with no regrets thus far. It's a powerful system and I am very impressed so far. It boiled down to customer service in the event of issues and Sony has just been making WAY too many mistakes lately (see the Sony thread in this gaming forum for examples.)

    It's a no-brainer...get the 360.

I've played the PS3...it is now up to regular Xbox standards...perhaps. :D

Really? I'm pretty sure most people consider the Xbox the console for hardcore gamers. The PS3 is more for A/V junkies who care more about incredible graphics and the included BluRay player than good games. The 360 has a much wider base of shooter games (and games in general).

My vote is for the 360 as well, of course. Tony's explanation is perfect, and there is nothing to add.

I've always wondered why certain people feel they have to bash other consoles. What gives?

Does it make you feel better about having bought a 360?

I am not looking to start an argument, I am genuinely intruiged.

In extolling the virtues of things he loves, RogueAgent sometimes steamrolls over other stuff. Believe me. this is nothing compared to his tirades about comic book movies. :))

I was one of the biggest critics of Sony and the PS3 - I thought the pricetag was way out of line, and the company was often needlessly arrogant and spewed misleading information about the competition. But they're learning. The PS3 has definitely turned a corner and it's improving as a videogame console. There are some games for it that I absolutely love - I enjoyed Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction so much I actually want and bought a couple of the older PS2 Ratchet games. Up Your Arsenal turned out to be one of the most fun and funny games I ever played (and all James Bond fans should see the latest installment of Secret Agent Clank).

But I still firmly believe that compared to the 360's expansive library of games, the PS3 has a long way to go before it catches up. Also, Sony's decision to drop backward compatibility from the new 40GB model is in my opinion a major blunder.

Likewise, when it comes to the consoles' respective online features. Xbox Live's layout, implenentation, and sheer wealth of stuff available leaves the PS3 in the dust right now.

So cut Rogue a little slack, he means well. ;)

I don't know if your still looking for an opinion but, get a Xbox. The games are way cheaper and you can find anything you want for like $10 at your nearest EB Games or GameStop.

Here's an interesting article courtesy of the Wall Street Journal on the PS3's disappointing decline in sales: WSJ Article on PS3

For those who want the short version: the PS3 was a distant third in terms of hardware sales during months leading up to Christmas and is falling further and further behind.

I own a PS3 and while it is a very nice, versatile piece of equipment, it is also too expensive for the average consumer, who probably won't take advantage of most of its advanced capabilities. Sony seems content to have it remain the most expensive console on the market and while its sales have improved somewhat since its release, the scarcity of games right after launch and a high price tag relative to the competition were obstacles that it never really overcame. Unless Sony institutes a massive price drop, it will probably remain something a niche or luxury item, purchased by a relatively small percentage of the public - mainly hardcore gamers and/or videophiles.

The PS2 is an out of date, 10 year old piece of hardware and really shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath as the PS3 or the 360. It had a good run but the difference in quality of software between it and the next-gen consoles is just night and day.
