Just out of curiosity, this is the first time I've seen this picture:

do we assume that Craig's face from this image was cropped onto a different body for the poster?

No- it's exactly the same shot of his head, right down to the hairs on his forehead. If you're familiar with photoshop, try dropping this head onto the poster and reducing the opacity of the layer by 50% or so- they should fit exactly.
It is, after all, easier to shoot a really great body shot and a separate really great head shot than it is to do the both at the same time.
And yeah- that PPK was odd- he did a lot of photos with it. Not sure why it seems to be permanently cocked as well!
EDIT: Then again, it could well be from the movie poster sessions ;% It wasn't until I gave it a second look that the undone bowtie registered.
Either way...looks like James Bond to me :007)

I'm thinking so it stand out more. He's in a seated position with a dark grey background behind the gun. If he had the black gun it might go unnoticed, and the photo would look normal. Just my opinion though.
I'm sure you're right---in fact, the EW article also featured the silver PPK prominently; that's probably where I made the connection...

Available for sale these days is an authorized "knock off" by Smith & Wesson. It is nearly the same pistol as the Walther, but has some minor differences - like an extended "tang" on the grip. This later edition of the PPK is what DC is holding.
BTW the animated Walther PPK in the Casino Royale credits was of the Smith & Wesson variety.

I actually prefer the ppk over the P99. I own a USA PPK and the extra tang keeps that middle skin between the thumb and trigger finger from getting chewed up.

Perhaps there's some sort of rule about that- if all the Bonds used a PPK a in the gunbarrel sequences (and I'd guess that they did) that means that even now, ten years after Bond stopped using one on his missions, we still haven't had a Bond movie without one! I wonder if Craig will use one in his new gunbarrel sequence...?
I have the edition somewhere, will scan and upload when I get a chance.
