Just out of curiosity, this is the first time I've seen this picture:

do we assume that Craig's face from this image was cropped onto a different body for the poster?

Not necesarily, I'm quite familiar with photoshop and it looks to me that this was probably one of the many unused photos from the poster photo shoot. I doubt they would have cropped his face from here and attached it to another body for the poster when it's easier for the shoot director to say, ok, give me that same look but in this angle or standing up or what have you. Although it does look like that could be the case, but I don't see why they would opt to do that considering what a pain it is to do something like that and generally the studio trys to avoid as many costs (for every change or every crop its an additional charge from the graphic artist) as possible.

No- it's exactly the same shot of his head, right down to the hairs on his forehead. If you're familiar with photoshop, try dropping this head onto the poster and reducing the opacity of the layer by 50% or so- they should fit exactly.
It is, after all, easier to shoot a really great body shot and a separate really great head shot than it is to do the both at the same time.

And yeah- that PPK was odd- he did a lot of photos with it. Not sure why it seems to be permanently cocked as well! :)

I think this is from the photo shoot of Entertainment Weekly, from '06, which featured an extensive write-up on Craig and CR. This one wasn't used, but I'd wager it was one of the ones shot and then discarded by whomever did the photography...

EDIT: Then again, it could well be from the movie poster sessions ;% It wasn't until I gave it a second look that the undone bowtie registered.

Either way...looks like James Bond to me :007)

I'm thinking so it stand out more. He's in a seated position with a dark grey background behind the gun. If he had the black gun it might go unnoticed, and the photo would look normal. Just my opinion though.

I'm sure you're right---in fact, the EW article also featured the silver PPK prominently; that's probably where I made the connection...

The "silver" PPK is really stainless steel. The original Walther PPK is no longer made by Walther in Germany.

Available for sale these days is an authorized "knock off" by Smith & Wesson. It is nearly the same pistol as the Walther, but has some minor differences - like an extended "tang" on the grip. This later edition of the PPK is what DC is holding.

BTW the animated Walther PPK in the Casino Royale credits was of the Smith & Wesson variety.

I don't understand why they have DC in many promo shots use the ppk but then never use it in the movie.

I actually prefer the ppk over the P99. I own a USA PPK and the extra tang keeps that middle skin between the thumb and trigger finger from getting chewed up.

I think he does briefly use the PPK in the bathroom fight, doesn't he?
Perhaps there's some sort of rule about that- if all the Bonds used a PPK a in the gunbarrel sequences (and I'd guess that they did) that means that even now, ten years after Bond stopped using one on his missions, we still haven't had a Bond movie without one! :) I wonder if Craig will use one in his new gunbarrel sequence...?

Interestingly, the PPK looks like a .22 calibre as well.

I remember seeing this image, it's from a photoshoot for Total Film magazine, although the background colour was changed for the actual magazine. I'm 99 percent sure it's the same photo.

I have the edition somewhere, will scan and upload when I get a chance.
