Title revealed at Pinewood and reported on BBC News - Quantum of Solace.
Showed brief glimpses of filming including Daniel Craig leaping to a cable in an ornate, high-vaulted room and talking to a blonde girl by a computer in a high tech room backed by a circular staircase.
As I said, it fits following the unhappy ending of CR, and Bond takes some measure of solace by going after the bad guys.
Still, I bet anyone you tell this news to goes, "Eh? What's the title again?"
It's a damage limitation title, like they can't trust themselves to come up with something original. Odd, isn't it, that Never Say Never Again back in 1983 now seems quite effortless and poetic...
I'm more interested in the geography and plot, have minor concerns about that.
Remember the quote from a recent interview with Craig, about the title being "more of a number" (which led to theories that it would be called "007")? Could it be that he was hinting at "quantum"?
He also said it didn't hark back to a Fleming title. A bit like saying Bond doesn't wear a tux in CR, Craig is a mine of disinformation... X-( )
At the press conference MW claimed that they only settled on the title a few days ago. They had a shortlist, but hadn't made a final decision. So Craig probably knew about the shortlist, but not the final decision.

Well that's an interesting title...but the Craig era is full of acquired tastes so I shouldn't be surprised by this.
If nothing else, it certainly stands out on its own.
Mrs. Man Face: "You wouldn't hit a lady? Would you?"
Batman: "The Hammer Of Justice isUNISEX!"

Quite a difficult title to mention to non-Bond fans!
"The new title is Quantum of Solace!"
"Ehh... say what?"
Well.... it's bold, isn't it? They are obviously pretty self-confident now; they don't seem to have wanted to try that in the Pierce years.
Mind you, I suppose there's a school of thought which would say 'there must be a reason why they haven't used it before now...'
It'll grow on me, and after all- a title isn't all that important. I'm still not particularly in love with Casino Royale as a title, but that never really mattered.

I suspect that when Craig received a script that said "Bond 22", he actually thought that was the title.
It doesn't roll off the tongue - but it does fit into the context of the film. Within the short story, the "quantum of solace" is the calculation of how much cruelty and suffering a person will take before their human feelings run dry. In the story Phillip Masters continues to love his wife even though she takes advantage of him and humiliates him, until finally he runs dry of humanity and begins to treat Rhoda just as appallingly.
If you think of this in terms of Casino Royale's "arc", where Bond has exposed his human side, only to be betrayed by the one he loved, it actually makes sense. The idea that he has now closed himself off to emotions fits in with Vesper's cruelty.
Don't forget to cast your vote about the title in the poll on the home page.
Personally I'm not sure, it's definitely classy, but is it mass market enough to draw in the cash?! I'm not a hater, but it will need a week or so to sink in.
I know that not everyone liked the title, but there was talk early on about Craig doing a trilogy where all his films were Fleming titles like "Risico" and/or "Property of a Lady". I thought, and still think, that these are perfectly acceptable ideas. IMO "Casino Royale" is not a great title...good book, but mediocre title, especially when compared to Fleming's master titles like "Live and Let Die" or "From Russia With Love".
What would be really bad is if Craig swung from Fleming-based roots of "Casino Royale" and followed it up with something clearly contrived like "Gold Never Kills" or something dreadful like that.

{[] JSW. The title makes more sense now. MW said at the press conference that the title suits the film and I'm beginning to see why they chose it.

Actually, that is a very good arguement. I already like the title more than I did after reading your comments! {[]
Fleming title though it is, I'm still not sold on it as a movie title. But I'll give the producers credit for again showing they've got muy cajones--a little-known cast, an "arty" director, and a title that doesn't exactly scream JAMES BOND. . .are Mickey and Babs risk takers, or what?

I personally think it is an excellent title -it does indeed fit in with CR and is actually a departure from the formulaic titles that could be contrived -it is indeed a Fleming title as well - which gives it that stamp of authority and approval IMO - and also continues the attempt to make Daniel Craig's 007 portrayal more in keeping with the tougher and grittier Bond of Fleming's tales. I applaud them for this step in direction -it is also fresh and make those that are not aware of this short story title to look once more at source material. I for one am a happy fan.

I've read all of Fleming's books, so I instantly recognized the title. However, for the life of me, I'm having trouble remembering ANY of the details you just mentioned. Was this in Octopussy? And can you spoilerize some more details as to what happened in this story?

No need to spoilerise too much it won't be in the film. It's a short story in the compilation called For Your Eyes Only. Bond is attending a dinner in Nassau, and boredly remarks that he's not the marrying kind but wouldn't mind marrying an air hostess as they're so obliging, The governor picks him up on this by telling a yarn about a male traveller who befriends an air hostess and gets married... it degenerates into a nasty little tale but there's nothing Bondian about it... Bond is merely listening in.

But it's good that all the main points are now addressed. We have a cast, a plot, locations and a title. Heck, we've even got a few clips!!
Bring it on!

) True!
And at least it doesn't have the words 'Die' or 'Gold' in it )
I'm a bit indifferent to it at the moment. It doesn't run off the tongue too easily though.

Ditto .... does not roll off the tongue well. Will take some time to get used to this title. If that is possible.
