Lost Season 4 (US)

I thought there was already a topic for season 4, but I can't seem to find it.

It's been a long time since Season 3 ended, so long infact I think I've forgotten how season 3 ended. I think it had something to do with a flash forward? ( ;) ) Anyway, despite the writers strike, it looks like season 4 will be on starting Thursday, January 31st at 9pm. I found a small clip from the premire here:

Yep, I can't wait. It's been a LONG wait between seasons. I am sad though that we are only getting half of the season because of the writer's strike.

Can't wait, but I'm also disappointed that the strike has affected the scheduling of Lost. But still, a 2 hour premiere. I'm there. And, are they really going home?

I was reading the new edition of the Radio Times and it gives away a major spoiler. X-( They describe it as being a surprise, well it's not a surprise NOW. Honestly.

That right there is the reason I try to avoid reading anything at all related to Lost. I even try to avoid eye contact with any magazines at the store that have Lost on the cover. I kept myself from all news the week before the season finale last year and had no idea at all about what would be going on. It was great and I was quite shocked by some revelations. So hard as it is I attempt to avoid reading any news having to do with Lost.

I hope every one remembered to watch the season premire tonight. Again we were treated to a flash forward. Tonights flash forward featured Hugo. It starts with Hugo being pursued by the cops. When the cops finally catch him he yells he's one of the Oceanic 6. I'm curious what he means by one of the 6? Does this mean only 6 people survived? As the show progress we also learn the Hugo has been having mental problems. Problems that starrted on the island and follwed him after his rescue. We found out that he saw Charlie in the liquor store (in the flash forward) and he ran out of the liqour store in terror (I must of missed why the cops were chasing Hurley). We also find out at the end of the show that Hurley regretted his decsion to go with Locke on the island and should of stayed with Jack. Still so many questions to be answered. And next weeks show looks very interesting, the rescuers arrive.....

Yes, I watched it. I have to confess, though, it's been so long since the show was last on, and since I never watch those hour-long "catch-up" episodes, I had forgotten some of the things that had happened last season. The episode was OK, I guess, if only because it continues to show what a self-centered prick Jack really is; but it raised more questions than it answered. Flash-forward? Maybe. . .but, then again, since Hurley seems to be in the same psych ward he was in before, maybe the events on the island are themselves flash-forwards? Or, perhaps, like in St. Elsewhere, the entire show is happening in Hurley's mind? Or "the six" who survived are really imposters, or they're in a parallel universe? (And, since Dominick Monaghan's name is still in the credits, is he now a new character, "Dead Charlie?") In short, the episode was a big, fat mindf___. Looks like I'm hooked again. . . 8-)

I’m hooked as well. I really enjoyed that episode. Few answers, but lots of intriguing questions.

So it seems that six of them (the Oceanic 6) escaped from the island. Three of them are Jack, Kate and Hurley. But Hurley went with Locke, so presumably something brings them together again. And also does that 6 include Michael? who must return soon, as Harold Perrinau is back on the cast list.

The cop who questions Hurley is Ana Lucia’s ex-partner. But Hurley denies knowing her. Why? Does he not want the cop to know that Ana is dead? Or is there another reason? I think this cop intends to try and find out what happened to her, meaning we’ll see him interacting with the other escapee’s.

It was great to see Lance Reddick from The Wire joining the cast as Hurley’s sinister visitor who claimed to be from Oceanic, but had no ID. We know that something is going to go very wrong with the rescue. Sinister guy asks “Are they still alive?” and Hurley freaks. When Jack visits, Hurley accuses him of making sure he’s going to stay quiet. So Jack seems to be involved in what went wrong, or made a decision to leave without the rest.

Also who is the “he” Hurley refers to when he says he wants them to go back? Jacob? I missed what scared Hurley in the cabin. Did anybody else see it?

Was Charlie a hallucination? Hugo’s had them before. But “I am dead, but I’m also here,” seems a very evocative line. But then again, Charlie might function as Hugo’s conscience from now on.

And I actually like Jack more now that he’s turning into a real a**hole.

I'm wondering if the Oceanic 6 includes whoever is in the coffin. Whoever it is did they did after leaving the island or before? I too have many questions after this episode but that's not a bad thing. I'm guessing that Jacob is the "he" that Hurley refers to and am curious what will change Jack's mind about going back. He clearly doesnt' want anything to do with the island right now but based off of the finale last year something happens that makes him want to go back. As for Charlie I don't think he was a hallucination. I'm not quite sure what's goign on there. But Hurley wasn't the only one who saw him, someone told him that Charlie was watching him. So if someone else was able to see him I'm guessing he wasn't just a figment of Hurley's imagination. But he's supposedly dead so I don't know how he can appear and then disappear again and other people can see him.

Just saw the latest installment, which was surprisingly straightforward: four brief looks into the lives of Naomi's team members, followed by their separate encounters with the survivors on the island. We've got a motley crew: an oddball who seems like he could be an empath; a hotheaded ghostbuster; an anthropologist who follows the Golden Rule of Lost: i.e., there ain't no ugly women on the island; and a drunk helicopter pilot who was supposed to be the pilot of the Oceanic flight. Their mission was revealed--to find Ben--but if you think that's the truth, you haven't been watching Lost very long, have you? So, till next week. . .

A nice little second episode. Not as much action as the first perhaps but that's quite alright when we keep getting surprises and more questions thrown our way. There is something very suspicious about Oceanic right now. Almost as if the crash was intentional and they are trying to cover it up and planting fake bodies? Not the most plausible explanation but who knows at this point. I'm not surprised that someone wants Ben though. Seems like no one is better at making everyone want to kill him. We are off to a great start to the season with two excellent episodes. Now let's get this writer's strike behind us so we can hopefully get the rest of the season in June!

Hmmmmm. This whole show had a different tone to it. Four team members sent to find Ben, sent to the island by a mysterious man who visited Hugo in the mental hospital after Hugo was rescued. Funny thing is, Hugo recoginized this man. So the question is, the man who sent Naomi to the island had an encounter somewhere with Hurley, but where? Even more questionable, if the man had an encounter with Hugo, why did he try to pass himself off as a lawyer from Oceanic?

And a side note. The drunk pilot called a phone number on the tv screen. These web sites and phone numbers are not made up. They actually connect to something. The phone number provided had no new information about flight 815, but as information is found, the message on the number will be updated. Here's the fan number:

    1-888-548-0034

Also, any one want to guess who #4 is of the Oceanic 6 and who the person Ben has on the freighter?

I'll give it a shot. I'm guessing that Claire will be one of the Oceanic 6. Whether she is #4 or not, who knows. Why do I think this? When Desmond was telling Charlie about his vision in which Charlie drowned he told him that if he did this he saw Claire and her baby getting on a helicopter to get off the island. This was the primary reason Charlie laid down his life I think. And what do you know, there's now a helicopter on the island! As for the man on the boat my guess is Michael.

I agree about Michael. It must be him. As for Claire being four, would baby make 5? A really strong episode. It's been an impressive start to season 4. Jeff Fahey and Jeremy Davies are excellent additions to the cast. And that pale redhead anthropologist is stunning. :x

Oh yes, the pale redhead. A very nice addition indeed. As for Jermey Davies, as I sat and watched the show I knew I had seen the actor before, but didn't know where I had seen him. I racked my brain for hours on end before I gave up and went to imdb. Jeremy Davies was in Saving Private Ryan , one of my all time favorite movies. Of course it looks like his charector is a little bit different.

I liked the scene at the beginning when he is really upset at seeing the wreckage, but doesn't know why. Going back to the first episode, when Oceanic/or is he? guy asks Hurley are they still alive? Could he be referring to the team he sent onto the island? He seems quite adamant in ep 2 that there were no survivors to the plane crash, although it could be a cover-up.

Seems like I remember in season 1, a flashback of Claire going to a psychic. The psychic told her that great danger surronds the baby. So who knows, maybe the danger has passed, maybe not.

Another thing I just thought of to. In this episode we heard Locke tell the survivors Walt was big. In Lost time, the survivors have only been on the island for no more than 80 days. That's quite a growth spurt for a kid (remember we saw Walt at the end of last season). Now shift to the second episode of this season. We saw Claire holding her baby. A big baby, who is holding his own head up already at 1 month old or maybe 2 months old. All I know is, that's a big baby for being so young.

And Survivor Number Four is. . .drumroll please. . .

    Sayeed!

The "flash forward" into Sayeed's future was the best yet, revealing that as part of his deal in getting off the island he becomes an assassin. It was a good "spy-vs.-spy" story with a twist ending that I should have seen coming, but didn't. That said, I wasn't at all surprised to find out who Sayeed's employer is!

Otherwise, the story on the island was OK, with the growing war between the Jack and Locke factions becoming more complicated, and with loyalties always in doubt. Best line comes after Miles calls Hurley "Tubby:" "Oh, great. The ship sent us another Sawyer!"

Now to find out who Number Five is. . .

i wouldn't be surprised at all if Number Five is Sawyer and number 6 is Locke. What I find intersting though is, they refer to these people as the Oceanic 6. Why do they call them this? Are these the 6 that took the large settlement that Sayed talked about? Maybe everyone gets off the island, but only six took a settlement offered by Oceanic. It's just to early to anaylize. Onward to next week, and Oceanic #5. I'm sticking with either Sawyer or Locke.

Brilliant episode. Sayid as a hitman working for :o. More than 6 must have escaped from the island. I doubt you-know-who is counted among the 6. My only complaint is that if Michael's return is supposed to be a surprise, then why is Harold Perrinau on the cast list? ?:) He hasn't even shown up yet. And neither has Zoe Bell, who I'm presuming is the same Zoe Bell who starred in Death Proof, but has yet to make an appearance. Baffling.

An interesting theory I've heard that I kind of like after this last episode: In the season three finale at the end when Jack meets Kate and tells them they need to go back to the island, Kate tells Jack that she needs to get back becuase "he will be waiting" (or something along those lines). A lot of people figured that this he she was talking about was Sawyer and he wouldn't want Kate to be out running around with Jack, they preseumably being romantically involved. But after the revelation in the last episode that Sayeed is working for Ben, it seems possible that the "he" Kate is referring to is in fact Ben. Maybe Ben has all of the Oceanic Six working for him for some yet unknown reason.

Here's what I think will get the Net a-buzzing after tonight's episode: In the first scene, Locke gives Ben a copy of what I'm pretty sure is Philip K. Dick's novel VALIS. The novel concerns split personality and the discovery of a vast alien satellite network--now broken and faulty--that has sent knowledge to humanity from the beginning of time. Take it from there, Lostaholics!

Anyway, another solid episode, chronicling the "future" trial of Kate and the revelation of her "son," who, not surprisingly, ends up being Aaron. (I guess he's the fifth survivor?) Naturally, the questions only continue--what happened to Claire, how did Ben get such control over the survivors, and who is the sixth survivor? (Could it be Michael, who has yet to appear?) And what, pray tell, is the true identity of Ben, formely presented as a simple janitor who made it to the top through homicide?

I'm also intrigued by the complete change in the character of Locke, who seems to be transforming into Colonel Kurtz. I sort of miss the old mystical Locke, but as we all know, on Lost nothing is forever. See ya all next week!

Well we now know another person who made it off the island, not a baby anymore Aaron. I wonder if he counts as one of the Oceanic Six? We also discover that Kate escapes her charges without any jail time and she and Jack seem to get along pretty well in this episode so something must happen to hurt their relationship since it didn't seem so hot in the finale last year. And what happened to Claire? Desmond told Charlie that if he died he saw Claire and Aaron getting on a helicopter to get off the island. Also noticed that Jack said there were eight survivors of the crash on the island. I have no idea why they are lying about this but there must be some good reason. And Ben apparently can get $3.2 million somehow in a week's time??? :s
  • Mr MartiniMr Martini That nice house in the sky.Posts: 2,709MI6 Agent
Here's my strecthed-out theory. Aaron isn't the fifth survivor. Why, because the Aaron that Kate holds at the end of the episode isn't the same Aaron born to Claire. This Aaron is the son of Sawyer, but Kate is most likely trying to make Jack think the baby is his. I guess time will tell.

On another board I post at someone posted this:

(Her fiance sent it to her. She wasn't sure where he lifted it from)

I only put the spoiler tag up because there are some therioes about the mystery of the island. Most of the stuff mentioned has happened already.
I think it's become clear that the island is in a different time. Looking over some theories that the real diehards have come up with I agree that somehow Dharma found the secret to time travel. I'll explain more in a second, but I'll get to your question.

The projectile fired from the boat had a clock inside of it, as did his little setup he had on the island. The clocks were synched together and started up at the same time when the projectile was fired from the ship. When the projectile finally landed on the island, it's clock read a time about an hour slower than the clock on the island. This is a case of Einstein's theory on special relativity. If something is moving at near light speed it experiences time slower than an object that is stationary. This has actually been proven. For a full explanation search Twin Paradox on Wikipedia. So, my guess is that there is something freaky acting as a force field around the island, maybe some type of electromagnetic field. Remember an episode ago when Farraday talked about the weird way the light scattered on the island...

Also, the guy they keep calling on the boat is named Minkowski. Minkowski is also the name of a German mathematician who came up with the concept of "spacetime."

Now, as for time travel. Somehow Dharma figured it out. The put one portal somewhere, maybe at their headquarters and the other one on the island. The Others took control of the island and thus that portal so Dharma really wants it back.

There are a ton of different theories for how it works and the consequences, but a few that really stick out to me are Locke, Rose, and pregnant women.

If the people on the plane travelled back in time, it could be a time period before Locke became paralyzed and before Rose got cancer. So that explains why they've been "cured."

Pregnant women is an even bigger clue. If a childless woman travels back in time she could not possibly give birth. It's the Grandfather paradox. If you travel back in time could you shoot your grandfather dead? If you could then how could you possibly exist in the future to be able to travel back in time?

If you have no child, you can't travel back in time and have a child. It's impossible, thus they die during childbirth.

Wow.I really like the theory Martini's posted. It makes more sense than any of the others I've seen.

By the way,in this particular episode Sawyer's reading The Invention of Morel. It's likely this book is another ruse designed to confuse the viewers--but it seems interesting anyway.

That is certainly a plausible theory and one of the better ones I have heard. Then again I wouldn't be surprised if the writers throw everyoen for a loop and throw something else completely different into the mix in the next few episodes. Lost has a tendency to throw off even the best theories and surprise everyone. With all the questions about who's getting off the island and how let's not forget all the other unsolved questions such as the smoke monster, that four-toed foot statue, and the countless others I'm surely forgetting. And did we ever find out what exactly was the significance of the numbers that have haunted Hurley and showed up at other times on the island? Perhaps I'm just forgetting in the onslaught of information.

All I can say is whoa. That was an intense episode and a nice touching phone call between Penny and Desmond to end the episode. It looks like things are going to start really heating up now.
  • HardyboyHardyboy Posts: 5,912Chief of Staff
Incredible episode. Just absolutely incredible. In some respects it reminded me of the old Christopher Reeve / Jane Seymour flick, Somewhere in Time, wherein a modern man's love for a woman is enough to pull him back into time. Of course, it's reversed here, with Desmond's love for Penny bringing him back into the present day. And so it would indeed seem that Mr. Martini is right: the island somehow exists outside of time. At the very least it's been established that consciousnesses can travel through time (Desmond and the dead rat--and I don't mean Fisher Stevens), but the question now is: can bodies move through time? Has Farraday somehow managed to transport the entire person--or even an entire island--as well?

Also, I'd like to pick up on my VALIS theory a bit. In Dick's novel, consciousness is beamed to human beings through a mysterious pink ray. The color of the ray used to bring Eloise "back" to the present? Pink.

O, man, the show is downright good again. I just hope that the episodes that are being produced now, since the strike, can maintain this quality. I'd hate to see so much build-up to a nothing payoff!
