Lining up the O's

I thought it would be interesting to mention that twice in a row now with Daniel Craig in the picture, the marketing team behind the Bond titles have lined up the O's on a diagonal and supplemented with the trademark gun 7. :o

CASINO
_____ROYALE
_______7=

QUANTUM OF
________SOLACE
__________7=

If applicable, does anyone think that this trend will carry on through the rest of the Craig films in the series?

JAMES BOND in
___RISICO
_________7=

THE PROPERTY
_______OF A LADY
________7=

Something I always noticed in the marketing campaigns for Bond films, is that they tend to market movies in pairs, roughly following the pattern that if a movie is succesful, next one is marketed in a similar fashion.
For instance, TB and YOLT (panels with action scenes, with Bond girls, and Bond alone), LALD and TMWTGG (posters were very similar), TSWLM and MR (Bond portraits were released with tux, and with dressed in the more exotic fashion of film locations, Egypt and outer space); OP and AVTAK (posters showed Bond with the main Bond girl in detail, then an action background)...
There is definitely a trend there, so it´s no surprise to me that they choose the CR lettering for QoS. It´s actually quite good, it works, and reminds audiences of the previous product in a subtle way. My guess is they´ll probably come up with a new concept for future movies.

I love the fact that the OOs are lined up to make 007, a point I have made on another aforun section. I think that this is a definite attempt to show that QoS is a sequel to CR and not just the "next" Bond movie. If Craig's tenure produces a mini-serial, rather than 4/5 entries to the series, ie: they will all continue to make a trilogy or 4/5 films then I expect we can see the OOs lined up for the whole lot. I already think that RISICO will be Bond 23 and then we'll see a Craig trilogy boxed set on DVD.

    What do fellow Bondies think?

Wow, I don't think I can think that far ahead, too much in the present with what's going on surrounding QOS in production.

Bond 23, hmmm...just no clue, I guess. But I'm sure I'll be happy with whatever. :007)

I like the linig up of O's. Because we have had two origional flemming titles in a row now, both with lined up O's, I hope and believe Bond 23 will be Risico or Property of a Lady. Are there any unused Flemming short stories or chapter titles with two O's?

The only other two that I didn't use were "The Hildebrand Rarity" and "007 in New York" Neither of them could work with the diagnonal, like the examples I've given though.

I agree with you 100% and believe that like CR, this will end in a way that will lead to Bond 23. I think this will happan as long as Craig plays the title role. I hope that it is so brcause I like the idea.

I think the OOs work pretty well, especially with 'Property of a Lady'. Just supposing that Craig were making some sort of 'Bond Begins' trilogy. Property of a Lady would be an excellent ending title, since Bond essentially becomes a thoroughly refined agent and the secret agent for the Queen...in short Bond is the Her Majesty's property.

I think the "oo7" is lined up primarly for us ignorant folks in the U.S.A. - the crowd who can't fathom words like "revoked".

Line up the "oo7", highlight them and even the most illiterate can see and recognise the "oo7" cipher!!!

"Hey Ma, let's go see that dar movie! It's got the double-nought fella in it!!"

    ;)

So do I. So much so, I think it should be applied it to other films as well.

Is it true that the original title for the book "For Your Eyes Only" was titled:

    The ROugh with
    the SmOoth
    7?

Examining the development of Bond posters over the years throws up some interesting points, especially over the billing of the main star and how this has changed over the years- particularly between Dalton and Brosnan.

With the exception of DN and FRWL, which were still early in the evolution, and of course OHMSS (a whole different story*) it was the normal practice to bill Connery/Moore/Dalton "as James Bond" in lettering almost as big as the title of the film. This changed with the release of GE; other than the title of the film, only the "007" symbol is in big print. Brosnan's name was in the correct place but not given the prominence allowed his predecessors. This has continued with the other films to date, with the "007" symbol being increasingly interwoven with the film's title as discussed above.

Sometime between LTK and GE it seems to have been decided to push the character of James Bond as the star of the film, rather than the actor playing him. This has always been the case to a greater or lesser degree, of course, but it wasn't formalised until that point in time- note that the words "James Bond" became less obvious than the "007" symbol.

*In some ways the publicity for OHMSS was a dry run for this process- Lazenby was downplayed (under the title) and James Bond promoted (above the title).
