The fact that different bonds have chosen different tuxs I find reassuring; tuxs are like any clothing, in and out of fashion regularly, and it's crucial that Bonds sets, or at least, follows, fashion tastes...
Quite right- I've never understood the popular fan assertion that Bond shouldn't have anything to do with fashion; he's supposed to be a guy with his finger on the pulse.
Is it even possible to buy a high quality suit which doesn't follow the fashion of the day?
I prefer Bond to be stylish rather than a follower of fashion. Coco Chanel said it all... "Fashion can go out of style, but style can never go out of fashion".

Just a thought here. I am always hunting on ebay for clothing. About a year ago I found my aforementioned notch lapel tuxedo on ebay for $50. It's a Hickey Freeman which is generally considered to be one of the top two US brands...the other being Oxxford (Oxxford is number one). My tuxedo was about $1500 when brand new and when I got it it had probably only been worn a handful of times...not a good investment for the original owner I guess). It looked brand new to me. Anyway, a Turnbull and Asser Casino Royale evening shirt and some Albert Thurston braces finished off my "Bond" theme. I have ony worn this a couple of times but I have gotten a lot of nice comments on them. Plus I think local Bond girls are impressed to see a tuxedo in my closet. )

Nice idea, but Bond's suits have always subtly followed the style of the day. If you had them all in a line-up, I'd imagine that Tim's and a couple of Pierce's early suits would be the only ones you'd have trouble identifying which decade they're from.
I want him sharp and keeping up with the times, please. His new Aston Martin is just as stylish as it ever was, but it's also modern-looking and up to date. Why can't that apply to his outfits?

Yes Mantis has been a great resource for all of us in this community and he has inspired the Bond collecting 12 year old that lives inside all of us. I am happy to say that Simon invited me to write an article on my affinity for Omega watches. However, I am sorry to say that I have not made the time to complete it although I hope to shortly. I just hope its "Mantis worthy" (if I can borrow a concept from Seinfeld). His articles and participation in our community are the gold standard which I aspire to live up to.
By the way, my T&A shirt has yet to be custom fit but I hope to have that done this summer. I am planning on going to New York sometime in 2008 as I am also a seamhead (aka baseball fan) and this is the last year of Yankee Stadium. I hate the Yankees but the House that Ruth built is hallowed ground which I must see before it meets the wrecking ball. Rest assured that when I make my Yankee Stadium pilgrimmage I will be paying a visit to a certain shirt maker on 57th. :007)

I'd disagree with that. Apart from the Moore fashion travesties, you could get away with wearing a hell of a lot of Bonds outfits from the early Connery's, and to some extent Lazenby's too. Even Magnoli makes replicas of some of these outfits that I wear regularly and they look bloody great. With Brosnan, you are right, but his ties let him down alot. Bond has always been about style, and Lindy Hemming wanted this timeless look for Brozza and Craig. You could even picture Connery in Craigs modern garb. I'd say that Bond has his feet firmly planted in the 'style' stable, only briefly and tentatively stepping into the 'fashion' stable every now and then.
On the other hand, do bad ties ever really go out of style? Seems like every generation has em
I think TWINE wins the 'timeless look' hands down with both the suits and the selection of ties. With the exception of the bright red tie with the yellow spots (from the Caviar Factory scene), all the ties look great and understated.

Connery's suits were very sixties, from those thin lapels to the three button, narrow leg, those odd cuffs... very cool but of their time- it just happens to be that the sixties style doesn't clash with our current fashion. To my untrained eye it even looks like a little of the fashion for Edwardian tastes crept into Connery's suits ever so slightly. Lazenby's were as wild as Sixties Bond got. He was one of the more fashion-conscious Bond, and I still don't think that's a bad thing; it was made in 1969, I'm happy to see him looking like it was. And I'm really not sure that Craig is going totally for timeless- look at the Bahamas suit with the peaked lapels; that's a pretty big fashion for single breasted suits now.

Again, I'm not sure- for TWINE BrosBond switched to a three-button suit which was the trend at the time. TND and GE were probably less informed by fashion (that cravat in GE certainly had nothing to do with fashion! )
In GE there's at least 3 occasions where Brosnan wears a three button suit (Q branch, tank chase, cuba)... although he does wear a 2 button when meeting with M. I tend to think of three button suits as always being a bit more classic than the two button suits, and as such has a tendency to fall in and out of popular favor but never going out of style.
