Pacino would be wrong in a role like that. He is far too high-profile and has played a villan too often in the past. An actor with a level of fame like Dame Judi before GE (or less) would be better.
I think that Pacino is a brilliant actor, however I think he has become quite lazy and has come to regard yelling as a substitute for acting. There has been the odd occasion in the past decade in which IMO he has given a terrific performance (such as Insomnia) but IMO it has been years since he's given a great performance. I think that the Pacino of The Godfather Part II could be an incredible villain, but I worry whether that is the performance he will produce rather than the OTT display he has produced of late. (Assuming of course the rumour is true, and like others, I am skeptical.)
"He’s a man way out there in the blue, riding on a smile and a shoeshine. And when they start not smiling back—that’s an earthquake. and then you get yourself a couple of spots on your hat, and you’re finished. Nobody dast blame this man. A salesman is got to dream, boy. It comes with the territory." Death of a Salesman
Regarding the spoiler tags - are they necessary at this point? These are *Ain't it cool* rumours for one and could there be someone who goes this November to watch this movie and somehow not know of a casting like the one we are discussing?
The spoiler tags are always necessary. Yes, these are *Ain't it cool* rumours, but not everybody wants to know of such rumours. I personally only got to this thread because of HH's thread (thanks HH for not listing it as a spoiler and having a spoiley title ) ) and I would have avoided this thread if it hadn't been for the other thread.
So in conclusion, can everyone continue using spoiler tags? You may not consider them to be necessary, but there are many other people, such as myself, who do.

darenhat, I suggest that between now and November you check out the following Pacino films if you have time. These films will prove his versatility as an actor. Hardly ever has he played the same character.
The Godfather Trilogy
Dog Day Afternoon
Scarface
Glengarry Glen Ross
Carlito's Way
Donnie Brasco
These films prove that Pacino is one of the world's greatest actors (maybe the greatest living). In these films he plays a calm and collected villain, a man at his wit's end who is desperately in love, a vulgar, OTT, murderous drug dealer, a hot-headed cocky real estate agent who rips on everyone, a cool-headed and reformed criminal who wishes to lead a normal life with his girl, and an aging, sympathetic, low-level gangster who never got any respect. This is just the tip of the iceberg on what this man can do. The only times he has been a little OTT is in his recent films, but we all know how hard it is to find good roles and films for people his age. Don't judge the man by his recent films.
I am excited to hear Al is going to be in QOS. I think having him play a small part is brilliant and I can't wait to see him and Craig confront each other. I expect him to bring a twist to his villainous role that the likes of Michael Corleone or Tony Montana could have never pulled off. His screen presence is nearly unmatched.
Lastly, when it comes to acting, Pacino wipes the floor with Craig, and every other 007 actor for that matter. Don't act like the 007 actors are on the level of the world's greatest actors. They are good at what they do, and that is James Bond. None of them have proven much else outside of the franchise. At least, nothing that touches what Pacino has done.
I completely agree with you that Pacino is one of the world's greatest living actors (not the greatest as that IMO is reserved for Robert De Niro) and I agree with you that the performances you listed are among the greatest of all time. I very much hope that, if the rumours are true, Pacino delivers a performance of a similar quality to the ones you listed above. But sadly, in the past decade, that has often not been the case IMO. It's not just Pacino; De Niro (my favourite actor) has frustrated me in recent years as well. That all said, Pacino like other great actors is still capable of delivering a great performance and so I won't treat this rumour as a disappointment just yet.
BTW, there is one Bond actor who has done some incredible work outside the Bonds, and that is Sean Connery. Puttig aside the Bond films, I think his work outside Bond (The Hill, Marnie, The Untouchables, Highlander, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade) has been exceptional.

All those great movies everybody's talking about are at least 10 years old. Heat (1995) is the last great Pacino-performance, IMHO.
The Godfather Part I & II, Serpico and Dog Day Afternoon (the 70's) and Scarface (1983) are 20-30 years old. I saw Ocean's 13 and it was an entertaining movie. Not great, but still good. Only Pacino was never close to being the Pacino from the great movies everybody loves to talk about.
Albert Finney would be a good choice IMO. But he played the bad guy in The Bourne Ultimatum, so I don't think they will use him.
I like the "highlight to read" function, very 007 {[]
Yes, it is pretty cool. However the purpose of it has been negated since so many replies to HB's post contain the spoiler.
Anyway, I think this rumor is exactly that. I have a hard time picturing this actor in a James Bond villian role. I might be biased, because I never cared for him as a performer. It seems like he plays every role the same, kinda like Tom Cruise. His performances also come across to me as OTT which would stick out like a sore thumb in Craig's films.

I've seen 'em...and didn't care for them. In fact, with the exception of Glengarry Glen Ross (and maybe Dog Day Afternoon), in my mind Al Pacino has almost become cliche when it comes to 'organized crime'. And I was hoping QoS would be something 'fresh'.
I wish people would stop editing the QoS wikipedia page.
apparently Pacino is playing a character called "Christian Blunner" who is head of Green Planet.
there are several problems with that statement firstly if the name Green Planet is mentioned in QoS it will more than likely be Dominic Greene's Cover company.
The thing I always found curious about Pacino is how a guy who made his reputation with somewhat introverted, subtle, quiet characters could do so much shouting today.
I mean, where exactly did Michael Corleone, the nice college boy, become the cold-blooded Mafia Don -- the transformation is stunning and absolutely believable, yet it's so incremental you hardly notice it -- until he has his brother in law garotted.
But he could also play expansive, larger-than-life. I think his performance in Scarface is brilliant and really gutsy in its over-the-top-ness. Perfect for the character.
And he can still do it. DanSame mentions Insomnia. Brilliant performance. That was the old, quiet Al.
I guess it just depends who suits up -- Michael Corleone or the colonel in Scent of A Woman. That's the stinker where it all his bad acting started, it you ask me.

I agree, Dan Same. Robert De Niro is probably tied with Pacino right now for the best living actors. While Harrison Ford and Christopher Walken have in my opinion been in more great films, Bob and Al have delivered more legendary performances than any actors I can think of. Maybe Gene Hackman, Daniel Day-Lewis, and James Stewart could compete with them for me.
Yes, it is a shame that both have failed to deliver a great performance since the late 90s. Pacino after Donnie Brasco had The Insider, Insomnia as already mentioned, and Simone (a hated film that I loved), but beyond that he is slacking. De Niro since Casino, his last film with Marty, has had Wag the Dog, Jackie Brown, and Meet the Parents/Fockers. All good, funny films, but nothing like the De Niro from the 70s. Perhaps their new film together, Righteous Kill , due out this fall will show them at their top form again. It looks like it may be an average 'B' "cops and robbers" film, but with these two sharing the screen almost 90% of the time I won't be missing it!
Lastly, I hope if Al is in this that he should not play Blofeld. Blofeld is in the past. He is for Connery's Bond. He has been used greatly, but also enough. Think of some new ideas, EON.

Apparently I haven't read in far too long as I am AGHAST at the title for the movie. ?!? is this Star Wars now?! :O But oh Al. I so love him. He's one of my all-time favourite actors. May I remind that there are A LOT of movies missing from that list. And I thought he was great in Scent of a Woman (I see we disagree on this one highhopes LOL), and in Frankie & Johnnie with Michelle Pfeiffer. Roles that are totally different from the villain. I think NOBODY can play a villain like he and De Niro can.
Problem with this is that he's FAR too good and FAR too famous to be cast as the villain, people would remember him instead of Daniel Craig (not that for me it's difficult )). Also, I'd have to root for the villain for the first time in Bond movies, and I just don't want that to happen. )
So.. glad it seems to be just a rumour.
"Are we on coms?" (if you don't know where this is from... you've missed some really good stuff! )
Even if it isnt Pacinno - I wonder if they will introduce a returning villian. Remember it was the second Connery where we first saw Blofeld. And I'd love some continuity. Personally, I hated seeing Blofeld where the only actor to play him twice only played his hands.
Thank heavens for that. Al Pacino hasn't given a decent performance in years. Great though he was in the 70's, he long ago became a parody of himself, with the SHOUTING, and the waving of the arms, and the complete lack of sublety. The thought of him gurning his way through a glorified cameo in a Bond film does my head in. I'm glad Eon are not interested in stunt casting, but would rather get the right actor for he role. That's how it should be.
Has anyone heard this rumour that Bond 23 will be set in Afghanistan? How would I find out more about this? Apparently they are hiring ex British military guys to be extras and I want to apply.

I'm not sure why you posted this to the Pacino thread, but yours is the first mention I've heard of Afghanistan. The most recent news on Bond 23 is that there will be a three-year wait until the film comes out because Michael G. Wilson is "tired," so nothing has been done on the movie.
I have to agree with you there man, I may be a bit young and foolish, but I think Al Pacino would make a very cool bond villian. He is an excellent villian who has his own style which i think could compliment the James Bond franchise nicely.

Absolutely. Why villains should be more subdued like Gert Frobe, Christopher Walken, Jonathon Pryce and Toby Stephens.8-)
