Haggis perplexed

I don't know if anyone has seen this or not but here is the link:

Paul Haggis seems to be very perplexed behind the title QoS, saying it has nothing to do with the story and it is not his title. I have stated before that I was very excited with the choice of title and the intent to keep the films rooted in the spirit of Fleming. But I was also assuming that the title would go along with the film and was against them just making a typical Bond film and throwing the title onto it, even though it didn't relate at all to the film, so that the producers could say "Look, we're still doing Fleming stuff!" Hopefully, the title will fit the film and we'll be seeing a movie in the same style as CR.

I think a lot of people were perplexed. I had heard of the title from the For Your Eyes Only short stories but had a tough time trying to fit it into a story. But I could see how it could be done.

So will this be a new trend using the unused short story titles instead of new titles?

Sigh. . .people, look to the right of the main page and you'll see the news articles, including a story on Haggis and the title. There's no need to go to other sites anymore, gang--it's all right here!

QOS is a rather non-descript title as far as Fleming Bond titles go, it could work for practically any Bond or thriller-type story: who doesn't need a measure of comfort in the spy biz? ;)

Not thinking this is much of anything, really.

Why did Haggis say that he didnt come up with it...Its Fleming - he came up with it.

Somehow I fear that this article takes several quotes and gives it a spin that the author wanted it to take. As is life.

All this says to me is that Haggis wrote the script - he had a title in mind, the producers debated and finally chose the Fleming title, QofS, over Haggis' title and he's not happy about it.

Perhaps this means there will be a Christopher Walken and Grace Jones cameo in the film to explain the title to one another! :D

The more I think about it I believe it's not what QOS means but how it rolls off the tongue. It's simple to understand that it means a Measure of Comfort just as Craig says. From all indications it fits not only this movie but as a follow up title for CR. It's like Craig said on the Insider Bond is hurt because of the death of Vesper and her betrayal of him but because Vesper left that message to Bond showing Mr.White's cell number he can at least hunt down the Terrorist Organization with the rules of the secret service(Not LTK rouge agent revenge). In the end however he knows that no matter what happens he can only ever receive a Quantum of Solace because Vesper is still dead and she still betrayed him. I think it's just a matter of QOS being a title that makes you think for a moment and the corporate entertainment media does not like to think. As far as Haggis goes it's probably all ego. He wrote the final draft on time probably came up with an apt title he felt was just right and it wasn't used by EON. Well Haggis has to realize that this is the Ian Flemings James Bond show not his. The 007 legacy will outlive him , his oscar and anyones critique of the title of Bond 22(#2) and any future title(RISICO?). Haggis is a Canadian ex-patriot and I love his writing but he should realize that it's an honour to be part of the 007(Fleming's)legacy worts(DAF,MR,AVTAK,TND,DAD)and all.

HAGGIS - "Yes but the pain is mine...and so shall be the solace."

Well Haggis has a tendency to throw a spanner in the works a tad. Remember his claim a month before Craig was cast that Casino Royale would be 'no Q, no gadgets, he's 28 years old...' er, well that would explain why Craig is mistaken for a car valet, or his nervous moment when asking Solange out for a drink... I do wonder if the left hand is talking to the right with these films. Or Haggis miffed that Thandie Newton wasn't picked for Vesper... 'it wasn't my choice..'

I've always taken Fleming's phrase Quantum of Solace as meaning a "measure of consolation".Whatever the interpretation,it only seems right that the James Bond movie released on Ian Fleming's Centenary will actually carry a title of Fleming's creation,as opposed to something else supposedly evocative of his style. And I think that Fleming's title can be easily made to fit the film's storyline--regardless of it's content.

Agreed. Haggis will just have to cash his seven-figure check...and remain perplexed {:)
