Who should play the next M?

armourer gave me a good idea. Who should play the next M?

Ian Murray McKellen
John Hurt
Michael Gambon
Charles Dance
Bill Nighly
Michael Caine
George Baker
Terence Stamp
Patrick Stewart
David Warner
Tom Wilkinson
Malcolm McDowell
Pete Postlethwaite
Albert Finney
Roy Marsden
Ray Lonnen
Anthony Hopkins
Derek Jacobi

My favorite is former SANDBAGGER Roy Marsden. He would be perfect as the grumpy M from the books.

    From that list, I like:

    Sir Ian McKellen
    Michael Gambon
    Sir Michael Caine
    Patrick Stewart
    David Warner
    Anthony Hopkins

I think they're more than capable to play M. I wouldn't mind seeing Sir Sean Connery in the role, either :) Probably not going to happen, though!

I'd add Helen Mirren to the list of candidates.

That's a fun idea; he would be rather good. He's got a great voice, too.

How about someone like Timothy West?

Helen Mirren is a goddess, but I feel we need a man next time. In fact, I think the one and only mistake in CR was not to sideline Judi Dench and replace her with a male M.

My choice from the list above, just without thinking would be Ian Mckellen. Sean Conery would be great, but just not going to happen.

Connery's just too old, we forget the man is nearly 80 now. Er, and retired.

I suggested TImothy West for this role ages ago. How old is he now though??

Patrick Stewart would make an interesting M.

    Bullseye.
Terence Stamp would have been perfect IMO.

Peter Firth has been playing an M type character in Spooks for 6 seasons, and would be perfect if he fancied moving from MI5.

I said it before and I'll say it again--Bernard Hill of Lord of the Rings fame has just the right "crusty" qualities for M.

Before Craig was chosen, I said Terrance Stamp for M and I'm standing by that.

Most of the other suggestions like Caine & Patrick Stewart are just too connected with other recognizable franchises...

I like David Warner as well...

One I would add to the list maybe 5-10 years from now would be Hugh Lawrie or David Jason (now)

I'd have always thought (particularly pre-CR, when a new male M would have been superb), David Suchet. I think he has excellent command and ability in all the roles he's played. Check him out in 'The Bank Job' out soon.

well i would go for peter firth who plays the mi5 chief harry pearce in the bbc series spooks.
he's wonderful in spooks, and the move from mi5 to head of mi6 should be no problem at all.
plus he was great in the double deckers, anyone else remember that?:D
