New hardback cover art

I was just wondering what others thought about the new hardback cover art for the re-issue of the Ian Fleming Bond novels. They are quite good and have a sixties feel to them, and also I like that they are handpainted artworks as well. But are they better than previous cover art? I'm not yet convinced. Maybe they'll continue to grow on me! ;)

In case you haven't seen them yet. . . http://www.mi6.co.uk/sections/articles/literary_2008_fleming_hardbacks.php3

I have to say that I like these covers, you can pre-order them over at Amazon.co.uk - this is turning out to be a VERY expensive year !

Looks like the artist is a BIG fan of the poster art from the 1967 Casino Royale--or the dancing women covered with funky slogans from the old Laugh-In TV show. Sock it to me!

Fantastic. 'Dr No' is the winner for me.

I guess I'm the only one who doesn't care for them. They are pretty unimaginative, IMO... much like the Glidrose covers that simply showed a silhouetted Bond in various poses.

These new covers really say nothing about the book, unless, like Hardyboy mentioned, you're a big fan of the 67 version of CR. But of course, we all know that that movie bore virtually no resemblance to the book.

The main complaint that I have with them is that they include only one aspect of the Bond books, ie. women. I would have preferred cover which focus more on the espionage aspect. There are a few cover which I do think work well, like DN and MR. As a set though, I think they could have been more interesting. Being but a student of limited means I won't be shelling out for these. :(

Oh, you're not alone, DH. I find the covers a little too derivative of the films and just too 1970s (the girl on the LALD cover looks like she just stepped off the set of Shaft). And, again, I can't stop thinking of Laugh-In. . .

Yuch. Only DAF and DN come close (though no cigar).
