GE Almost as good as CR

In light of Daniel Craig's performance as Bond, all other Bonds have seemingly been discarded in the minds of many fans. When I first saw Casino Royale I loved it, but was annoyed that it overshadowed the other Bond films. I posted a stupid review saying it's not better Thunderball when in fact it is far superior to Thunderball in every way. I have accepted Casino Royale's new direction and embraced the new Bond. But that does not mean that all other Bonds pale in comparison. Casino Royale is great for it's realism and that's what elevates it above other Bond films. But let's not forget, while not as good as Casino Royale, Goldeneye is an excellent film that still stands out even with Casino Royale. The key reason why Goldeneye is almost as good as Casino Royale is the key to CR's sucess: Its realism. Goldeneye played on the political fallout and international tensions of the post Cold War era and presented an antagonsit not motivated by an insane and cartoonish desire for world domination
but a personal vendetta against Bond and his homeland. Bond faced critisism by his boss and even his guilt of losing a friend. While some later Brosnan films were degraded into senseless action sequences Goldeneye maintained the seriousness and importance of it's plot. Realism aside, another reason would be Pierce Brosnan, who at the time was in my opinion the best Bond since Sean Connery. Brosnan possessed both the toughness and unique charm of Bond and performed outstandingly on screen. The final reason Goldeneye deserves more respect in light of Casino Royale would be that it salvaged the Bond franchise which at the time, was believed to be incapable of functioning in a non Cold War environment. Overall the point to this post is to remember that Goldeneye possesses some of the strengths of Casino Royale and that even though not as powerful overall, still deserves a similar appreciation to CR.
