Twenty One before No. 22

Today my wife and I start the 'slow' Bond marathon. Our aim is to watch all 21 official Bond films before the premier of QOS here in New Zealand (sadly not until 27 November, when I have company over...meaning I will not be able to free myself to watch it).

She is slightly nervous about the process, not sure if she can handle so much Bond...for me it is a test of the relationship. :007)

Anyways, hopefully after this she will join AJB and become a frequent poster (I doubt it). At least she said she might compose a favourites list. :D

Who thinks we can make it all the way through without my wife giving up? I am taking bets. She has seen five or six now (CR, TB, OHMSS, NSNA, TND and GE) and so far her favourite is GE or CR.

What film do you think we can make it to?

I was talking about this a few days ago; here's the topic ! I will not be watching NSNA or the old CR though ! :007)

I'm interested that you're not watching them in order..any reason? The only reason I ask is that I watch GF the other night...and I'm now really interested to watch them, but in the correct order, as some do follow on from other's (something I learnt on this site!! :D)

If your wife has managed this many, I can't see her not liking the others. TSWLM is my second fav, and I would get that one on pretty quickly.

I reckon she will get up to at least 17 or 18 before she has had enough! (it also depends on what space interval you have in between. I can't imagine 1 a week is too intense :007)

For the marathon we are watching them in chronological order. We started with Dr. No last night (she enjoyed it -{ ) and we are watching FRWL tonight.

the others i mentioned were ones she had picked out before, some she liked, some she fell asleep to, so we shall see. So far so good, with 20 more to go! :D

Well we've finished DN and FRWL. She prefers FRWL over DN citing the fact that in DN everything seems to easy and the girls don't seem to do much but be lead along or easily outdone by Bond. She liked that Tatiana at least took out Kleb helping Bond in Venice.

She is now on the look out to see how the treatment of girls progresses (or in some cases degresses) over the series.

GF is next on the list. We don't know when we will get to it this week, but I will keep you posted! Cheers! {[]

Well she will definately like the later movies then as the Bond girls do tend to take a more active roll. This is especially true in the Brosnan era. She will probably like GF. If memory serves I believe Honor Blackman was the first Bond girl I heard make the claim that she was a different kind of Bond girl and more Bond's equal.

As far as getting through all the movies you are off to a good start. After 10 years of marriage I still don't think I've seen all the Bond movies with my wife.

You may start to run into trouble in the Roger Moore era. My wife liked the Connery movies and the newer ones, but the only one she would sit through between LALD and LTK was TMWTGG. She liked Nick Nack.

i think every woman has a little fantasy for a little person. :x Not to say you aren't the alpha male. I think my wife will like Nick Nack too!

we are half way through GF, we had to stop it last night as we got tired, we are right at the golf scene and although she disliked how Dink was treated ('say goodbye to Felix') she is warming to GF. we will finish it tonight and I will get back to ya!

...oh I don't know. I fell in love with Moore in TSWLM..That is my favourite Moore film (and second on my list) I also enjoyed MR, but then I really like Star trek and the like, so it's all down to wether she can handle the space stuff or not.:))

Funnily enough I didn't particularly like GF :o ...I found there was no chemistry between Blackman and Connery, it will be interesting to see what your wife thinks. ;)

Yes, we finished GF last night. My wife liked it quite a bit. It also was reminded of how good a Bond film it is, with so many good one liners and so many wonderful iconic scenes. Plus, Gerhard is great as Goldfinger, IDK why but him wiping his eyes as he gets in his car after Odd Job throws the bowler hat at the statue is just acting brilliance!

My wife's favourite part was the fighting scene with Odd Job because for once it didn't seem like Bond had it easy. In fact that's one of the reasons she liked the film so much, he kept running into difficulties. She also liked Pussy Galore and how she did a little bit more than swoon. :p

Watching the films in order there are a few things I am noticing. First, Pan Am is the air company he flies in DN and FRWL, but in GF he flies British United and private jets. Interesting to see how that changes over time.

Also, the next time I watch them all in order I want to chronicle all the mistakes Bond makes...it could be interesting to keep a "Bond Bloopers" journal. :(|)

So, with three down we now have 18 more to go. TB is next, one of my personal favourites, we will see what she thinks.

We have to take a short break, I am actually hosting an extended edition LOTR marathon tonight at our place (12 hours of elves, dwarves and hobbits oh my!). :D

Oh and btw...her favourites are in this order:

    1. Goldfinger
    2. From Russia With Love
    3. Dr. No

Pretty soon and she will have a profile and a favourites list on AJB!!!

Well, last night my wife and I finished Thunderball.

"...he strikes like Thunderbaaaaaaal." Love it!

Anyways, my wife liked this one more than the others. She liked how Bond messed up a couple times (like dropping the gun at Largo's place) and how Domino seriously got into the action (killing Largo). She enjoyed the underwater battle scene a lot and also found the underwater footage pretty neat and different for a Bond film. She also said that she never got bored and enjoyed the pace of action, the one liners ( "I'm sorry, she's just dead" and "I think he got the point." :D ) and how the different actors played their respective roles.

I couldn't agree with her more. I had gotten sick of TB since I used to watch it all the time (it was, for a while, my go to Bond film when I wanted to watch Bond). However, after watching this time I loved it sooooo much. Some people don't care for TB and think that Connery should've stopped with GF. I personally think that he should've stopped after TB (although I enjoy portions of YOLT and I do like DAF). TB was the second of the big action Bonds and delivered in one-upping major fighting sequences etc., it takes the essential Bond elements introduced in GF and solidifies them. TB is a Bond classic. Great job Connery, and Domino is just wonderful, one of my favourite Bond girls.

    The wife's (Ellie) favourites list:

    1. Thunderball
    2. Goldfinger
    3. From Russia With Love
    4. Dr. No

I asked her if each new Bond movie will become her favourite, she responded tartly, "I don't know, mayBE!" :p That's my girl! I doubt YOLT will top her list...but you never know!

Now it's actually me, rather than my husband. :D

I have a review to post for our latest movie in the marathon - You Only Live Twice.

What do ninjas, capturing space ships and explosive volcanoes by the touch of a button have in common?

That's right - You Only Live Twice.

I think the producers and movie makers behind Bond went a little too far with this one. It was alright having an underwater battle in Thunderball, that was cool (get it? :))), but ninjas dropping in from the ceiling and stabbing people who don't bleed is a little much for me. And plus, WTF is with making Bond Japanese? :#

As we watched each Bond the movies got better and better, but then YOLT came along and changed that whole pattern. I think the success of the first four films got to EON's heads and they went overboard (rather, over-volcano).

    Well, here's to the rest of the marathon, the husband who just won't quit on trying to get me to watch these things and my new membership to AJB. -{

Check out my favourites list as it continues to build.

I couldn't agree with your review of YOLT more!

In the words of Sean, 'Shocking, positively shocking!'

After watching it, I was totally reminded of why Austin Powers chose that film as the one to make the most fun of. Ridonculous. :# They totally should've stopped with TB for Connery. The success got to their heads.

It can only get better though, OHMSS here we come!!! {[]

Another thing that hurts YOLT is that IMO Connery gave his weakest official performance. Yes, it was certainly the weakest of the 60's films, and nor would I would describe it as a great Bond film. But it's still fun and has alot of terrific things going for it (Helga Brandt, the fight scene at the start, some of the dialogue etc...). So I will always have a soft spot for YOLT. :D

No problem Dan, sometimes it's hard to tell on network sites eh?

Yeah, she really enjoyed GF, certainly. I wasn't sure how she would feel, but she really thought it was top notch.

As far as your comments on YOLT, I of course enjoy it...since its Bond. However, I agree that YOLT was Connery's weakest performance as Bond. It's almost like he ran out of energy while the production spent too much energy.

Also, there are some fun things in YOLT, Little Nellie, the dialogue and relationship with Tiger, and the rooftop fight sequence are things that I enjoy...but the rest of it is just lost on me.

YOLT will probably drop for me after we are done with all the films, every time I watch it (I think I've seen it less than 10 times...which for a Bond film is saying something) I seem to like it less and less. :(

When I think YOLT I think of the time when Bond just "happened" to be carrying a handy-travel-size mechanism to open Osato's safe (especially when in the next film, OHMSS, he uses a rather large clumsy machine that takes quite a while to open the safe, although it WAS a printer and copier as well :))...)Oh and I also laughed in YOLT when he pulled out those handy suction cups to climb down the volcano layer:' (:#

I totally agree about Tracy - she is so great! :xBy far my favorite bond lady.
The only reason I like GF better than DN was because things were too easy for Bond in DN - lost my attention. GF kept me more on the edge of my seat.

Well, we're back on the horse so to speak. We just finished OHMSS...finally. We took around two weeks to get through it. We were away at two conferences and plus an appropriate ski weekend while staying at the Whakapapa Chateau (very much in Bondian style with champagne in the room waiting for us :007) ). To say the least we enjoyed ourselves and when we returned we finished the quintessential Bond film, OHMSS.

By far still my favourite (and I think my wife's too). There are few parts in that movie I don't like (the only one that rubs me wrong is when M says "Operation Bedlam is dead" it just strikes me as too cold for the old codger :(). Anyways, great film and now we are on to DAF.

Our release date for QOS is 27 Nov. so we still have plenty of time to get through the other 16.

So I need to change my order of favorites because OHMSS is by far the best one I've seen! I know it's a great film because this is my third time seeing it and the end still made me cry...plus I am biased about the soundtrack as my husband and I's first dance was to We Have All The Time In The World with Louis Armstrong :x .
The only thing that slightly annoyed me was when Bond was up at Blofeld's place he slept with so many women when he supposedly was crazy about Tracy! X-( But I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt believing that during that time he wasn't 100% sure about his love for her and that it wasn't until she helped him escape and they were in the barn during the snow storm that he realized how special Tracy was :) .
Also, I think Tracy is my favorite Bond girl character so far. I thought Domino was pretty sweet as, killing Largo, but Tracy is much more like me attitude-wise and so I was able to connect with her character. Plus the way she killed that one dude by throwing him into those spiny-wall hangings was pretty rad! (Although who in their right mind keeps that type of art decor?! :)))

    Yes, I am sure. :007)

Now, we just finished DAF. This movie drops in my approval each time I watch it. I used to love watching, thinking it was fun and entertaining. Yet, the more and more I watch the more and more it bugs me that they ignore OHMSS and the more and more it bugs me that Connery looks so flabby and old. AHHHHH. Anyways, its gonna drop on the favourites list.

Now on to LALD. Love this movie. :D

We've finished LALD, what a great movie! Roger Moore made a fine debut in LALD. There are so many great characters, from Tee Hee to Whisper and of course Sherrif J.W. Pepper. Then there's the title song, the wit and the Bond girl. So good. It definitely is going to move up on my favourites list, I forgot how good it is.

We are watching TMWTGG now and Sherrif J.W. Pepper's presence bugs me, but other than that I enjoy this film. Good fun. We'll see as we continue it tonight.

I too REALLY liked LALD - the story kept me on edge and the creepy voodoo added to the excitment. :o Most certainly one of my top favs (plus it was fun to see Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman's first debut movie!) And Roger Moore makes a really great Bond (in fact, I think I like him more than Sean Connery, although he ties with George Lazenby, so far at least).

However, TMWTGG had a great story line, but the women were sooooo stupid!!! I felt like we were watching another early bond film and it really bugged me. And the music was horrid - who thought that "who will he bang?" were blockbuster words??!! ?:)
