Please do Duncan post the time it's played; that will save me the nausea I always get when I listen to Jo Whiley...

yes, the reaction hasn't been that great either..but doesn't this always happen...I really didn't like YKMN..but once I saw it with the titles it worked perfectly.

I think when all the pieces are together, and you hear it with the titles it will work, however, it is very different...

    But I :x it...:007)

It might work when combined with all the elements but the themes that everyone remembers are the ones that work as standalone songs. What was the general opinion when Live and Let Die came out? Oh this is rubbish we'll see what it's like with the titles?? Unlikely!

I've heard it once and it sounds like a mess not a theme.

As said above it's was on just before 11am so 55mins into the show.

James Bond theme gets first play

Jack White and Alicia Keys' theme for the new James Bond movie has had its first airplay.

Radio 1 DJ Jo Whiley debuted Another Way To Die on her morning show. The track will feature in Quantum of Solace which is out on 31 October.

The song, which is the 22nd Bond theme, is driven by White's trademark fuzzy guitar riffs and thunderous drum rolls.

The pair were announced to score the track in July despite Amy Winehouse being hotly tipped for the role.

The track sees the singer trading vocals with Keys over a horn section with White singing: "Another blinger with the slick trigger finger for Her Majesty."

Keys responds with: "Another one with the golden tongue poisoning your fantasy."

Fans had already heard part of the track after it was used by Coca Cola in an advert for Coke Zero, which has rebranded Coke Zero Zero 7 to tie in with the movie. However, White's management distanced the singer from the advert.

The announcement that White and Alicia Keys were to do the Bond theme came out of the blue after it was confirmed Winehouse would not be recording a song.

Her producer Mark Ronson said the sessions for the track had been scrapped.

Jack White and Alicia Keys join a long list of stars who have recorded Bond themes in the past including Madonna, Shirley Bassey, Duran Duran and Paul McCartney.

Former Soundgarden and Audioslave singer Chris Cornell sang the song You Know My Name for the last 007 movie, 2006's Casino Royale.

Reaction to the track from fans has been mixed.

Writing on Newsbeat's Have Your Say debate, Mike from Brighton said: "This is in no way a decent Bond theme. It lacks that certain epic quality that a theme should have."

Others argued that Amy Winehouse would have been a better choice.

Sharky from Liverpool added: "She (Winehouse) has a voice to boom out the theme in the way Dame Shirley Bassey did with Goldfinger."

Others praised the song. Wes from Wolverhampton said: "On first listen it sounds good. It's more low-key and a bit dirtier sounding than the last Bond tune, which was a more in-your-face affair. If it reflects the plot then I'm sure we're in for a great film."

Sounds like the Diet Coke advert should be distancing itself from the Bond theme... :D

"Another blinger with the slick trigger finger for Her Majesty."

Nasty, brash, unsophisticated…completely out of context with the whole Bond ethos. Lacks in any way, shape or form style or refinement. Bond's been brought to the Cathouse Club on a Saturday night with black finger nails and eyeliner.

Just heard it. I sort of like it but it does sound early 1970s glam, ironically the staggered guitar work which slows it down sounds like a Paul McCartney riff on a song on his last album, Only Mama Knows, which was a 70s throwback. It makes it less listenable imo, it's a bit of filler.

It doesn't sound as classy or emotional as I anticipate Forster's film to be.

Did anyone hear Chris Moyles's interpretation of the song on the Radio 1 Breakfast Show before he heard it? It makes for amusing listening if you can get it on Listen Again or the iPlayer, it's towards the end of the show.

"Another blinger with the slick trigger finger for Her Majesty."

What does it mean? :)) That lyric is mad. Is it sexual innuendo? What's that bit about a golden tongue? Is there a man with a golden tongue in this film? The most baffling line since "and he strikes like Thunderball."

well my interpretation is that the "blinger" is "good looking Bond" with a slick trigger finger, as in, good at shooting guns, and "for her majesty" is the fact he is working for M16....I actaully quite like that line.

What can we expect from the video - Daniel Craig rapping during the instrumental and saying 'Yo-Yo, I is a slick fingered agent innit', every five seconds.

I heard it - and it stinks. White & Keys join the likes of Madonna on the Bond theme turkey list.

Sound more like treason to me. You can't do that to the Queen even if you're Bond :o

Very very poor. Totally unmemorable. Poor lyrical content, no dynamics. What a shame as the film looks like it could be up there as the best bond yet.

So far, I quite like the instrumental.

The vocals are appalling as far as I can tell. I don't think I would ever listen to this song for the pleasure of it.

With all the talented artists that were attempting to land this, this was the best?

I have finally heard it for the first time (or at least 40 seconds worth.) :D I don't love it. I think that the lyrics are a little unusual and I don't think that Jack White is such a great singer. I would have preferred it if Alicia Keys could have handled the whole song herself. The one thing that I did like was that the first few beats (pre-singing) sounded quite Bondian. :D Other than that, and Keys' singing, I wasn't particularly impressed.

BTW, I looked up the lyrics and the site which I found incorrectly reported the first line as 'I know the player with the slick trigger finger for Her Majesty.' It took me a while to work out that the site which I looked up for the lyrics wasn't exactly accurate. :))
"He’s a man way out there in the blue, riding on a smile and a shoeshine. And when they start not smiling back—that’s an earthquake. and then you get yourself a couple of spots on your hat, and you’re finished. Nobody dast blame this man. A salesman is got to dream, boy. It comes with the territory." Death of a Salesman

I've only heard it once; I need to hear it a few more times yet to make anything like a decision (which I retain the right to change at a moment's notice!).

I didn't think the song was too bad. But the delivery was rather poor. It needs someone who can actually sing to put some darkness and power into it. Otherwise, it just sounds a bit - well - wishy-washy really.

Maybe it'll get rocked up for the soundtrack.

    Incomplete lyrics from 'tinterweb:

I know the player with the slick trigger finger for Her Majesty
Another one with the golden tone voice and then your fantasy
Another bill from a killer turned a thrill into a tragedy

    A door left open
    A woman walking by
    A drop in the water
    A look in the eye
    A phone on the table
    A man on your side
Someone that you think that you can trust is just
    Another way to die

Another tricky little gun giving solace to the one that will never see the sunshine
Another inch of your life sacrificed for your brother in the nick of time
Another dirty money, heaven sent honey turning on a dime

    A door left open
    A woman walking by
    A drop in the water
    A look in the eye
    A phone on the table
    A man on your side
Someone that you think that you can trust is just
    Another way to die

They miss out the weird R'n'B style wailing/shouting at 2:30. I see Bond sacrifices for his "brother". Is that like his homey? 8-)

It really is quite surprising how bad this theme is. And that from someone who doesn't mind Die Another Day…
  • RavenstoneRavenstone EnglandPosts: 152MI6 Agent
Yep. As I suspected. The lyrics are pretty much awful.

It sounds rushed, unfinished. Like a first draft really. I like the general riff, but the execution is pretty weak. Needs a different voice, and tweaks.
