Roger Moore: "I'm the worst Bond, apparently."

Roger Moore had this to say recently during an interview with Bryony Gordon of the Daily Telegraph:

"I'm the worst Bond, according to the internet. Generally hated! I was too funny, too light. Didn't take it seriously enough. Well, I mean, this is a man who is supposed to be a spy. And yet he turns up in bars and hotels around the world, and everyone says, 'Ah, Mr Bond, we've been expecting you.' Everybody knows who he is and what he wants to drink. It's the same with the Bond girls. All the new ones say, 'Oh, I'm going to be different from the others', but before long it's always the same - 'Oh, James!'"

In light of the endless comparisons to Sean Connery, Sir Roger once again appears unfazed, admitting that "the important thing to me is: 'Did I get the cheque?' I did, and they keep coming. The residuals are quite handsome!"

Now see what you all have done? :v

Oh well, unpopular as you may be Sir Roger, there are still a few nutters out there, like myself, who consider you the best! :p :))

    My philosophy - each actor who has played 007 brings soemthing different and unique to the character. I fall into the Mr Craigs Bond clique, - the actor himself is incredible in the role - but I would not have loved the Bond universe if not for first seeing Sir Roger's version of the character when I was a kid. Plus how could he be "the worst Bond?" He's done the most of them thus far!

    Lovely article - I love the fact his naughty sense of humour has not abated! - It will be good to see him on Jonathan Ross next week! :D
    This is Thunderbird 2, how can I be of assistance?

    Sir Roger was a superb James Bond.It's often said that comedy--especially light comedy--is hard to do well, but it's always been one of Sir Roger's greatest strengths.Accordingly,Sir Roger reshaped his version of 007 into someone closer to himself-a less dour character,thus making his Bond ideally suitable for the many outrageously unbelievable(but nevertheless entertaining)films he appeared in.And Roger was equally credible whenever a serious 007 was required.I think it takes real talent to be able to do this so well.

    I'm not a fan of all of Sir Roger's Bond movies--but I'd be a liar if I didn't admit to having enjoyed nearly all of them.And I've always appreciated Sir Roger.:) ;)

    Here's to Sir Roger Moore-the most prolific and the most unique 007 of them all! {[] {[] {[] {[]

    Count me as another one who appreciates Roger Moore's Bond. While his characterization probably wouldn't work in today's world, it was perfect for the 1970s. He kept the series alive for twelve years and provided some wonderful moments. C'mon, Rog, no one hates you here! B-)

    Quite so. I love Roger Moore. Nevermind that he was my least favourite James Bond. I enjoyed all of his Bond films, to one degree or another, and there's absolutely no doubt that he kept the franchise alive in the Seventies and Eighties.

    Long life, good health...and continuing residuals, sir! You've earned them all -{

    Nooo. I like the funny in him.

    Sir Roger Moore is one of my favourite Bond's, He starred in my favourite film TSWLM. He is IMO a very good Bond. I would die to meet him.
    He seems a very nice guy with all his work with Unicef. I am a member of his offical website. I have all his Bond films and his signed autobiography. He is one of my best Bonds.

    Does this mean that Roger Moore goes on the internet and looks at things like this then ? :o (he has probebly already seen this topic)

    Who else would of done Bond in the 70's?

    At any rate, Sir Roger is being characteristically self-deprecating, here---and certainly too hard on himself.

    I simply can't accept the premise of "worst Bond." For instance, I love pizza. When I rank the different kinds of pizza I've had in my life, on two different continents, I don't rank in terms of 'best' to 'worst.' I tend to think in terms of 'favourite' and 'least favourite.' When I have a piece of my least favourite...it's still pizza---and I love pizza.

    But Bond isn't exactly like pizza, so...although I do think there is a Best Bond (Connery)...and a Best Bond Since ConneryTM...there is no 'Worst Bond.' Only a 'least favourite.'

    Roger Moore has been in some risible and cheesy Bond movies, he got too old.

    But he seems to be a really great, genuine, and likable person, a national British treasure akin to other camp 1960s icons like William Shatner and Adam West, and is not a obnoxious ******* like the grumpy Sean Connery (hypocrite, no variety to his acting) and that psychopath George Lazernby (suspected of violent domestic abuse, verbally bullied Pierce Brosnan).

    Moore helped revitalise the franchise in the same way that Daniel Craig has done. How? Because he in no way physically resembled any of his predecessors. Lazenby was very much in the Connery mold.

    Moore looked just as iconic on the posters, but quite a different lookng guy to the other two. That 'long face' look (not sure how else to describe it) was followed on by Dalton and Brosnan. Obviously the humour was key to those particular films. Some of Moore's style is very camp today, but that was fashionable in that decade and not associated with homosexuality either. Also, Moore looks quite old compared to the Jason Bourne types today, even from this third film onwards. Still, Connery and Moore's films are in the same bracket for me: larger-than-life, unpretentious escapist entertainment.

    I like ROGER MOORE, but never really cared for his run as oo7. He is an engaging and intelligent fellow. Had he taken himself and his acting ability more seriously, many of the complaints about his Bond would never have arisen.

    But in the end, he not only got the cheques, but cashed them ....good show!

    In my view, Moore and his films were the perfect escapism entertainment and he was a marvelous Bond. Period. -{

    Indeed, he rates lower on my list, but he's got some very good installments as 007. And for being with 1/3 of the movies, he's got quite a stamp on the series.

    My sentiments exactly. {[]

    Sir Roger was my Bond growing up and he introduced me to a world that has given me countless hours of pleasure and entertainment.

    Whilst I agree all his films may not work today they were certainly relevant and in tune with the time.

    I've become very protective of the Moore era and Sir Rog has always ben a true gent.

    We do indeed have a energy crisis again. Maybe they should redo Golden Gun and instead of a Solex Agitator being the item of pursuit, it could instead be a Hybrix Integrator. :007)

    And really, Roger is given too much guff. He's been the silly Bond, but he's also twisted women's arms and shunted men off great heights. That's ruthless, right?

    If any of the actors that have portrayed Bond respect the original material, it's Rog!

    He may have made it his own, but I think he had to at the time and I'm damn grateful he did too!

    I went to the Fleming tribute gig at the London Paladium last Sunday, Rog is just so damn casual with the adoration he receives yet you know he just loves it!

    If only that man could live forever!

    I always preferred Moore's Bond. Connery had become too cliche'd.

    Saying this would get me kicked out of Scotland, but these days I prefer Moore to Connery. I'd much rather watch TSWLM, LALD or FYEO than any of the films Connery made.

    Sir Roger Moore is a living legend, and his Bond films will always be appreciated. For Your Eyes Only and Live and Let Die rank particularly highly on my list, and I've always regarded Moore as my favourite Bond while conceding he wasn't exactly the literary 007. Despite the masses of fan mail he must get for playing the role, he obviously has been a little put off by what he has read here on the internet.

    It's a great shame, and I sincerely hope he logs on to AJB007 one time to see what we have to say about him.

    We salute you, Roger Moore! Thanks for your irreplaceable contribution.

    It is always great to hear Sir Rog speak! I saw him on the Jonathon Ross show and plan to listen to his recent radio interview soon. I am also dying to find some time to read his new autobiography! One of the many reasons I love this guy so much is because he has never turned his back on Bond. He makes it clear that he enjoyed playing the role and is still involved with Bond to this day. He is quite informed for a man of 81 when it comes to all of this internet discussion. I hope he goes to IMDb and owns all of the people over there who hate him for no good reason.

    Of my Top 10 007 films only two or three of his movies are up there but he will always be my favorite Bond. His approach may not have been the best in many people's eyes but he had the guts to try something different and make the role his own to escape Connery's shadows.

    I am a historian, and when I look at my favorite times in history I especailly enjoy looking at the most influential and pivotal moments in the history of something whether it be the rise of a great nation like America or even a film franchise. Sir Roger took on the role after Connery left EON for good and Lazenby failed to become popular and, therefore, had quite a weight on his shoulders. He had to bring James Bond into a whole new decade with a whole new approach that was not only original and in tune with his talents but also one that fit the culture of the times. Had he not done this so well we would NOT have Bond films to this day. So when it comes to the most influential and pivotal actor in regard to this awesome franchise's longevity Sir Roger Moore is without question the most important figure.

    I hope Sir Roger is around for many more years to continue enjoying his golden years with his residual checks. I am confident he will continue to have something to say about the world of James Bond from time to time. I hope the gift of his suave, sophisticated and classy personality will be around for the world to enjoy for as long as possible.

    Nobody does it better than you, Roger Moore!

    To paraphrase Sir Roger's forward in his autobiography "When I have nothing nice to say about a person, I'd rather say nothing at all ... This is, after all, a book about me: a suave, modest, sophisticated, talented, modest, debonair, modest and charming individual".

    The man's a legend. -{
