I am interested in who you think should play Q in the next film Daniel Craigs 3rd outing as OO7.

its hinted at very strongly that Q will return in the next film by Daniel Craig and others in interviews. and a possibly return for Miss Moneypenny.

heres my choices for Q and some for Moneypenny since I mentioned her there.

Q - John Sessions

Q - Michael Gambon

To my mind, Jim Broadbent would be a good Q.

For Q I'd go with Hugh Laurie.

Saffron Burrows is just devastatingly attractive---might be a better 'bad Bond girl' :x My brother got to play a scene with her on an episode of Boston Legal, and says she's twice as hot in person...

I have heard Hugh Laurie mentioned as a candidate for Q and I used to think he would not be good. Now I have thought more about it and I think he might be acceptable after all. Let me say I thought Cleese was a great choice to succeed Desmond. He was also funny but in his own way and was at a good age to take the role for 20 or so years. But, he obviously won't be back after the way EON has treated him recently (plus he is semi-retired) so we will need a new guy for Bond 23.

Allow me to explain how I believe the next Q should be. Out of respect for Desmond the next actor should play the role differently and with his own interpretation. Just as all the actors have had a different interpretation of the role of Bond all the actors who play Q from now on should play it differently to keep it fresh. The actor needs to be around his mid 50s so he could play it for along time over many generations and many 007s to ensure long-term continuity just like Desmond did. There should always be comic relief between Q and Bond, but in a different way than between Desmond's Q and Bond. Q will always give Bond new toys, but the success of the banter and chemistry between the two will be up to the actors who portray them.

I truly hope that EON brings back Q (and Moneypenny) because these characters are iconic and traditional institutions in this franchise. They were never among the problems that needed to be addressed after DAD. CR and hopefully QoS brought many good things to the franchise, but taking out traditions like these characters were unnecessary changes. I think the recent Comcast on Demand commercial with all the Q clips advertising all 21 Bond films in HD proves that Q is still popular and well-liked.

If Q does come back (and he's bound to, at some point), I completely agree that the dynamic ought to be different somehow. I like the notion of Laurie, because I'd like to see Q's disdain for Bond as something more palpable, and serious (at least to Q himself). I'd like them to convey the sense that, perhaps, Boothroyd is quite clever---moreso than Bond. I'd like to see Bond more in honest awe of what Q branch does. It's just a thought, and off the cuff at that; I'll probably feel differently about it tomorrow ;)

There'll never be another Desmond, and correspondingly we don't need another eyes-rolling pantomime, because we've had that already and it was done quite effectively.

I agree with Loeffs, a new Q should be much different than Desmond. I never thought John Cleese worked, probably suffering from being too much like Desmond. Just brainstorming, how about a young nerdy guy. For Moneypenny, how about Jenna Fischer of The Office fame.

I probably should have mentioned earlier that the new Q should NOT be Major Boothroyd. Desmond's Q was Major Boothroyd and he is dead. The new Q should just be the head of Q Branch with no specific name other than the title "Q". It's that simple. Boothroyd is Desmond's character just like Miles Messervy is Bernard Lee's character.

I would have loved to see Michael Caine as Q, but I guess he is now to old to carry the role for a couple of decades.

Both Jim Broadbent and Hugh Laurie sound like good choices to me.

Hugh Laurie would be a greate M, but i'd rather see him play sir Gerald Terrant in a future Modesty Blaise film

Jim Broadbent would make a good Q also...

but after starting to watch Batteries Not included hosted by John Cleese.. and I did like him in Die Another Day... great Q lab scenes... I would be happy for Cleese to return as The Quartermaster

thesecretagent and double0seven7, Your taste in women is commendable ;)

yep Saffron Burrows has amazing legs, and a beautiful figure, and very attractive looks, I think she would be a great moneypenny, seeing her in the Bond films in outfits like pictured above would be great. :))

she is a fantastic actress also. watch the film 'GANGSTER No 1' she is a main character in that, plays a great part.

I still say Michael Gambon for Q or I would be happy to see John Cleese back he did a nice job in Die Another Day, his Q lab scenes were one of the highlights of the film

I think the new guy should play Boothroyd. Like Peter Burton began in Dr. No. The guy is called Boothroyd in the novels and Desmond was most of the time (or always) called Q.

I agree , I didnt mind Cleese as Quartermaster as Bond reffers to him at 1st ....

but i agree the new actor should play Boothroyd...

remember Casino Royale and QoS and meant to be the begining of Bond again

I am sorry, but I have to say, that I don't want Q and Moneypenny returning back at all.

It would be just floating in old waters, the overuse of gadgets, the funny lines with Q and so on like in the good old days. But these days are gone and I appreciate not always looking back.

The same with Moneypenny. What's the point for bringing her back? We don't want to hear political incorrect sentences from Danny, so flirting and cheesy lines, do we?

i agree , less of the comedy element... But I think Q should be played in a more serious fashion like Peter Burton and Desmond Llewelyn in Dr. No & FRWL.

Yes Moneypenny should come back ... I liked Moneypenny in the samantha Bond style .. stand up to James and takes the micky out of him a bit as he does her, when as Louis Maxwells moneypenny and caroline bliss etc seem to just have googly eyes for Bond ...

Saffron burrows would play a moneypenny like none of the others... I think..

I would like to see her as moneypenny, but have her uninterested in Bond and Bond trying to get her interested... that style would play well in this day and age.. I feel..

Moneypenny should certainly return. She was Fleming's creation and inhabited a small but important part of 007's world. Keeley Hawes would be a perfect choice for the role. She is certainly attractive and could play the cool, direct Moneypenny of Fleming's novels very well.
Let's forget about Q. Major Boothroyd appeared only in the novel Doctor No and only because he was "the greatest small-arms expert in the world." Q or Q Branch was just a department that provided Bond with train tickets and various equipment(not necessarily gadgets.) The anonymous tech who injected the tracking device into DC's arm in CR is about as far as we need to go with Q or Q Branch.
The character I would truly like to see in the films is May, Bond's Scottish housekeeper.
She is quite wonderful, especially in FRWL and Thunderball(the novels)and was always a welcome breath of fresh air. While some might argue that too much of Bond's home life might slow the pace of the films, I think that a brief scene in which May draws back the bedroom curtains and scolds Bond for over doing it the night before, just before the phone rings, would be appropriate and would help set the tone for some future film. Bond, bored, sullen, alone, gets snapped out of it by some important case that's just come up. As she pours him a cup of strong black coffee he could say something like "Thanks. Don't know what I'd do without you May." She could then grumble some curt response and Bond could grumble in return.
    May has always been one of my favorite characters from the novels and I'd like to see her on screen at least once. If she hadn't become M, Judi Dench would have been ideal for the part. Casino Royale marked a return to the Fleming Spirit. I hope future films including QoS will continue in that vein. Keep Q techs in the background where they belong. -{

Broadbent or Gambon would make excellent Qs, and I was always averse to Cleese(even tho I like him,I always expected him to do some kind of slapstick).

Maybe Morgan Freeman - "Get busy spying or get busy dying!"

If there's any reason now for Q to be ****y at Bond, it would be because of Craig's portrayal of an incredibly impatient spy. I look forward to that moreso than an ADD kid chowing on Pixie Stix before bedtime on Christmas Eve.

Guy Hamilton coached Desmond Llewelyn on the role way back in Goldfinger. I'm paraphrasing but the dialogue goes:

DL: Why would I be short with Bond? He's 007?
GH: Yes, but he never returns anything you give him. Everything Q-Branch gives him, he destroys.

Watch the Goldfinger making-of documentary. It's a very interesting watch as are all the documentaries really.

If they're playing characters to the hilts like they have been, the origin of Q's disdain for Bond is going to be very very interesting.

I would set my final choice on

    Saffron Burrows AS Moneypenny

because shes an outstanding actress and seriously sexy , unique and beutiful. and would be the best moneypenny yet ... play a completely different moneypenny than has gone before

    and

    Michael Gambon as Q

nice layer cake connection between Daniel Craig and Michael Gambon. and Gambon is very charasmatic and funny but cool ...

I realy like Michael Caine as an actor and love him in many otehr films ... but he's too Old and I would not want him in a Bond film. he dosent suit the genre for me and due to his involvment with Batman ... I think his character would be a bit stale due to the avoiding copying the Batman butler character..

It's interesting that there's discussion of "Q" returning when they've already established "Q" ... as a villain. With that done -- and the understanding that Quantum will be a running "character" -- I don't think we'll be seeing a return of Q by name (title?) to MI6. That said, I can imagine bringing in Major Boothroyd -- Q was an invention of the films, not of Fleming -- in a deadly serious role as befits EON's reboot.

As for Moneypenny, I would also see her returning since, as others have noted, she's a part of the Fleming canon. But, as others have also noted, I don't see a return to the "customary by-play" with Bond; no, if Moneypenny is brought back, it will be strictly business ... which is more as she was in the books anyway.

For Q and Moneypenny to come back there should be a plot driven reason, and as pointed out - the comedy should be dropped.

Q branch as protrayed by Fleming was nothing but a travel agency, and source of equiptment. Boothroyd was a real person - a small arms expert, who could be brought back - but to do what? - Explain the Walther PPK to Bond or give oo7 a .500 Smith & Wesson for under his car seat. Really I haven't missed the worn out cliche of having Q explain gadgets then have Bond deploy it in the same order it was described.

Moneypenny in the books is "cool and desirable", and to bring her back would be ok - just like Tanner in QOS. But to what end? Tanner was a wash in QOS, why introduce a charecter everyone expects to return only to have her sitting in a chair saying "...you can go in now..." Might be a problem to if the new "Moneypenny isn't available in two years to fill the chair.

it's nice to hear everyones opinions on this .. great stuff.

I agree Bothroyd should come back but played seriously alongside Moneypenny... both roles played ariously...

the gadgetry should be re introduced.. but in a relaistic and beleivable... way and not over the top stuff..

I mean from Dr.No to YOLT .... Much of the gadgetry was rudimentary and convincingly real and worked to a certain degree... i mean the Attache FRWL... did and could have been real... it was perfectly beleivable... also the little breather in THUNDERBALL ...so much so in fact Peter Lamont got a phonecall stating that the royal navy were interested in the mini breather.. although Peter Lamont explained how long can you hold your breath...

i would like to see the return of realistic gadgets and devices.. and not Stelth Camo Aston's and the like...

Moneypenny I would like to see played seriously and more eye candy for the audience rather than for Bond himself...
