QoS's strong initial performance should put a stop to Criag's 'unsuitability' as Bond...Obviously, a lot of people were eager to see him in action again. I think the steep drop in sales owes more to the fact that the film is, quite frankly, not up to par with CR (or other Bond films for that matter). Craig need not worry personally!

'Quantum of Solace' Top Bond Film of all Time at North American Box Office

    Thursday January 8, 2009, 8:00 am EST

CULVER CITY, Calif., Jan. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- At the motion picture box office, there is one man who keeps showing that nobody does it better: Bond. James Bond.

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures'/Columbia Pictures' Quantum of Solace, the 22nd James Bond adventure, has taken in over $167.1 million to become the most successful Bond film of all time in North America, surpassing the $167 million grossed domestically by Casino Royale, it was announced today by Jeff Blake, chairman of Sony Pictures Worldwide Marketing and Distribution. The film is still playing in 891 theaters in the United States.

In addition, Quantum of Solace has grossed another $382.9 internationally, with the important market of Japan still yet to open. Taking in a worldwide gross so far of $550 million, Quantum of Solace is already the second-highest grossing Bond film of all time worldwide.

Commenting on the announcement, Blake said, "It is always gratifying when the audience responds to a film, but to be working with a character as successful as James Bond and see the two films Sony has handled become the two most successful films in the history of the franchise makes us all tremendously proud. It has been a special thrill to work on the Bond films, and we couldn't be more excited by the success of Quantum of Solace."

    'Nuff said.

CR = love story; QOS = revenge story. That makes for some differing BO right there IMO. And oh yeah, there's that pesky recession...

For general audiences I'm sure QOS is as good as anything else they plunk down bucks for, just not telling a "Casablanca" love story like CR did. QOS is doing biz at a decent Bond clip, I would think the discrepancy would be far greater if the film was "not up to par" - BO is right at "par!" ;)

QOS has not yet passed CR in US box office receipts. Sony is being premature, at least according to numbers posted by BOM and others. CR's take is posted as $167,445,960, while QOS has not yet made it to $167,100,00. QOS still has over $350,00 to go. It will get there I think, but very, very slowly as it is down to #21 right now. Why the heck would Sony put out an announcement like this. Now they look stupid.

Not to rain on anybody's wayback parade, but I found this ranking interesting: worldwide admissions in modern era (post-LTK) are:

    CR: 90.4m (ranking 6th) - remarkable numbers

GE: 81.9m (ranking 10th) - very good numbers

QOS: 76m (as of 12/30/08, ranking 11th) - best numbers of the modern era follow-ups ;)

    DAD: 74.3m (ranking 12th)

    TND: 73.9m (ranking 13th)

    TWINE: 71.2m (ranking 14th)

Even with Japan still to come, doubt QOS leapfrogs GE's 81.9m admissions. But I'm not seeing anything here that would suggest QOS didn't click with general public worldwide, only that it performed as one would expect based on immediate Bond history (expectations of Sony bigwigs notwithstanding {:) ). And as regards the direction of 23, I'd best-guess it as a QOS-type storyline w/same type action, but the darker revenge theme of QOS excluded (but will that mean one more quip included for Loeff??).

Anyhoos, QOS even with mixed reviews/fan reaction has done everything one would hope, it seems. {[]

I checked BOM for the weekend results for Jan 9-11. QOS was not to be found in the top 37 movies in the US. Can this be right? How can it drop from #20 and $1,100,000 down past #37 (Wendy and Lucy ?:))at $17,500. If there is no mistake, this means QOS is done in the US and it will not surpass CR in box office take. I can't believe it could possibly drop that much in one week. Has anyone heard anything different?

I wouldn't worry, Chief--BOM tends to ignore weekend numbers for current movies that aren't in the top 20. I think on Monday they'll have the recent figures up.

And indeed the newest numbers have been posted to BOM--it shows the film as having made $167.5 million, about $90,000 more than CR made. So even by BOM, QoS is #1!

    Hurray!

    Box Office Mojo:
    Domestic: $167,535,553
    + Foreign: $383,799,389
    = Worldwide: $551,334,942

    Compared together:

    1 Quantum of Solace $167,535,553
    2 Casino Royale $167,445,960

Now considering that we still have two more weeks or more for this film to run in the United States, I feel it safe to say that this film will REALLY edge out CR when the final numbers are counted.

World wide you have CR= $$426,793,106
    QOS= $383,799,389

I am not sure whether Japan is going to bring in $44 million, but if so, then it will indeed be number 1.

For the first time in over a week BoxOfficeMojo has posted new numbers for QoS. After more than two months of release in North America, the movie has made just over $168 million. On the eve of its debut in Japan, the movie has made $552.4 m worldwide.

Couldn't see a mention elsewhere, so I'll report it here: QoS was second at the UK Box Office in 2008, with a £50m take, beating The Dark Knight into third and Indiana Jones into fourth.

Number one was Mamma Mia, but we don't like to talk about that.

Nice opening in Japan, according to Variety...

    http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117999034.html?categoryid=13&cs=1

Already about 1/3 of what the picture needs to do to tie CR in that country...

So it won't equal CR, worldwide...but it's pretty respectable, considering the lamentations of the masses...

If Japan goes as the rest of the world, QOS should end up with $580-585m for a worldwide total. Damn fine BO for such a risky Bond film. {[]

(For comparison, "Iron Man" did $582m worldwide.)

    just to point out,
Ironman cost $150m to make and took in $582m
QOS cost $230m to make and will take $585m est

Ironman like the Dark Knight look like big spectacular movies, where as QOS looks small in comparison, Seems realism is getting more expensive.

No question about it. A huge portion of the expense of films like the Bonds is having the entire production pull up stakes, like Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey's circus, and circle the globe, in search of interesting and picturesque locations---then, of course, having multiple units shooting in multiple countries simultaneously---whereas fantasy films like IM and TDK create a good deal more of their heroes' worlds on computer screens and soundstages.

IM's locations were pretty much restricted to Southern California, I should imagine (plus wherever they used to double Afghanistan), and TDK did a lot of its location work in Chicago, with a couple of spectacular establishing exteriors in Hong Kong.

I for one applaud Eon's commitment to 'taking us along' on their globe-trotting adventure---the money really is right up there on the screen, though I'd concede I hope the film editor's salary goes to someone different next time! ;)
