Hi fellow fans.

Some joker here at work who thinks he's a bigger 007 fan than me tested me out this morning by asking where did Dr Kananga's name come from. Aaaggghhh!

I wouldn't admit this to him but I don't know!

Can anyone help me out??? ?:)

He's named after Ross Kananga, the crocodile/alligator expert involved in the "Trespassers Will Be Eaten" sequence- and who doubled for Roger Moore during the jumping over the crocs. The screenwriter, Tom Mankiewicz, liked his name and used it.

This story is recounted so wonderfully in the Live and Let Die Making of documentary included on the DVD.
I just love Julius Harris (Tee Hee) in that. The look on his face when he talks of this is just wonderful: "He had a lion. AND THEY GOT TO THE LION." :))

I do wonder what his first name was though? Ross, after Ross Kananga? Or Buonaparte after Mr Big in the original 1954 Fleming novel. I find it a bit odd that they never gave him a first name - just like Investigator Brimmer in the Columbo episode 'Death Lends A Hand', where no first name is given either.

Whatever became of Ross Kananga? Is he still kicking around or did his Alligators eat him?

Sadly, he died of a heart attack at a young age a few years after LALD.

That's very sad indeed. I didn't know that.

Yeah, Kananga's stunt outtakes are scarier than the take they used. Brave effing guy.

Julius Harris came to a rare screening of the US TV "Casino Royale" kinescope at USC (1982 or 1983), along with Barry Nelson. Harris was such a big, warm, nice fellow. A lot of career actors are....
