I beg to differ on the gadgets thing. The novel CR had its share of gadgets - the bomb disguised as a camera, the walking cane/gun, and the car that dropped spikes on the road to disable pursuers. Granted that these gadgets were not 'issued' to Bond by Q-Branch, but they laid the groundwork for the weaponry that became de rigeur in the Bond world, such as the knife shoe and attache case.
