A plot question..... Canadian Agent.

When Bond catches up with Vesper's annoyingly sleazy ex-boyfriend he tells the Canadian Secret Service girl "you've got a leak, go and fix it" or something to that effect.
Now I assume he got the swine's whereabouts from Greene blabbing, so how did he know the Canadians have a leak? Can this be explained please?

I love it! This thread made me laugh out loud. :)) Thanks for the chuckles.

Now, about the whole plot question. I think it probably comes from Greene's little chat. This lack of clarity and transparency on behalf of the filmmakers is what made my wife not like this film. She said, "I want to be part of that conversation...not wondering what happened!" Very frustrating for some, liberating for others. I guess they could've included it - they had enough time for Pete's sake!

The biggest problem i'm seeing is that they made too smart a movie for the average viewer. I'm not trying to insult anyone's intelligence here, but it's just a fact that a lot of people go into a movie to be entertained not to think. It just so happens that if they particularly enjoy the film they start to think about it and realize they either didn't pay enough attention or just don't understand the setting. I'm quite guilty of this as well if it's something that I don't know I will like but end up loving.
Now here is what happened: It's a few days, possibly a week or more since Bond left Bolivia. MI6 has been tracking Yusef for a few days, so they know who he has been with. They know his M.O. now, so they can surmise who the girl is. With a little homework and a picture of the girl they get a clear picture of who she is and who she works for. As for the CSIS having a leak, it would have to have Quantum agents in place in order to best position Yusef. It would be a waste of time for him to just randomly pick girls and hope they have security clearance.

That must be why they opted to release QoS instead. I'd rather see the 'intelligent' version, though!

In answer to the original question, Bond knows they have a leak purely because Vesper's sleazy ex is with her. He's obviously pulling the same trick that he did on Vesper. And the only way her high-level Secret Service identity could be obtained by Quantum is if there is a leak. Bond is a clever chap.

I didn't notice it the first time I saw the film, but the second time I picked up one of the Quantum people suggest "maybe we should pursue the Canadian option" (or words to that effect) during the Tosca scene. This gives the appearance of Corinne from Canada at the end a bit of context - since the Bolivia option failed, Quantum is turning its attention to Canadian water. Presumably by compromising a CSIS agent in the same way they compromised Vesper they can start to worm their way into high places.

Just imagine, Bond 23 set in ... Ottawa? Moose Jaw? You heard it here first. ;)
A tall youngish man in a dark blue suit, white shirt and black tie turned away from the window and came towards him.
"Mr. James?" the man smiled thinly. "I'm Colonel, let's say - er - Johns."

Theres nothing to suggest anything wrong with Canada's water...yet

But I dont know about that - it seems like a lot of work for Quantum to concentrate all their power on one small agent from Canada, whereas they had been focusing on an entire nations water supply

Well, Canada -- a lovely country, by the way -- has a vast wilderness and supply of natural resources. It makes sense that if plundering resources is part of Quantum's plan, them Canada is a good a target as any other nation, if not better. And the Canadian agent might be the perfect in -- someone at a level of security clearance to get Quantum access to seemingly unimportant information but not so highly placed as to arouse suspicion.

That's a fantastic observation! Bravo to you! I never picked up on that.

    I completely agree.

Apart from a huge water supply, most people also don't know that Canada, after Saudi Arabia, has the second largest natural oil supply in the world.

Certainly worth controlling, I would say. :v

Also a great excuse for including a stunt with a 400 ton Caterpillar... :D

I picked up on this too, on my 3rd viewing, it really is one line, but I thought the exact same thing - 'ah, that's the tie in with the Canadian at the end' and because Bond was listening in to the conversation, he put two and two together and assumed she was the 'Canadian'.

    This film really is, blink and you miss it, but I guess once you watch it again and again (frustrating I suppose for some, but great for others ;) ) it's like finding new bits of the jigsaw. I think many more viewings of this film is needed - and the jigsaw continues to grow -{
