Which do you prefer SMERSH or SPECTRE ?

SPECTRE with;
Largo, Blofeld, Black Dragon Society etc

SMERSH with;
Le Chiffre, Mr Big, Red Grant, Kronsteen etc

I enjoy SMERSH more than SPECTRE. I enjoy the whole kind of Russian, Cold War intrigue associated with SMERSH more than the crime syndicate nature of SPECTRE. Especially for the period of Fleming's novels, SMERSH was a potent and sinister threat as a villainous organisation.

Did Spectre ever really exist in the novels much? Only in TB, and you could argue that wasn't even a Fleming creation as it came from Jack Wittingham and Kevin McClory's suggestions. After TB it's really all about Blofeld.

In fact, Smersh did have something a lot nastier going on throughout, like Fleming really hated their guts. Of course, they were real, Spectre fictional.

I'd say Smersh especially in Casino Royale and From Russia with Love. There are a sinister foe in thoses novels. Smersh are at there worst in From Russia with Love and Red Grant is a brilliant villain.
