Daniel Craig in Defiance

Just saw Defiance last night and I must say I was really impressed.

WWII films aren't usually my 'bag' but after seeing the trailers I thought it was worth a look, if only to see what Daniel Craig's peformance was like...he was superb, heck, even the guy out of the 'Scream' movies was good!

I thought at first it was going to be a violent, action heavy war movie so it came as a pleasant suprise to me to see that the violence was rather tame, although there was alot of it in places, it wasn't over the top hollywood action, not that I dislike films which include it.

At numerous points throughout I began to enjoy it even more as I kept reminding myself that this was a true story.

Overall I give it 8.5/10.

I would love to hear other peoples views on it.

I've been on a bushcrafting holiday with Ray Mears in the very forest in Belarus that the partisans made their home. I have nothing but respect for the skills they developed and the people that they harboured and protected during this time. A true inspiration. I am really looking forward to this film, I hope that it isn't just gung ho action and that it pays due diligence to those skills which kept them alive and in comfort in the wilderness for several years.

I will definitely be seeing this movie as soon as possible. Can't wait, since like Loeff, WWII films are my bag as well. I am going to try and get a mate of mine to go with me on this one as he still isn't sure about DC's acting chops...8-)

There's been a little bit of controversy (when isn't there when it comes to DC's films ?:)) about these brothers depicted in the film...something about them killing innocent Poles. I can't find the original article I read, but here is a Wikipedia link that explains some of it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defiance_(2008_film). Just scroll down the page and look at 'Controversies and Inaccuracies'

I've met quite a few survivors and their families from Novogrudok, as well as descendants of the Bielski brothers. All of them have nothing but respect for these people, the partisans and what they did. It's really great that their story should be told now. Just a shame that the slim negative rumours that surround one aspect of the story have gained such strength in recent times.

I don't have first hand accounts, but I agree that it's a shame that such negative rumours surround this movie about some people who seem to me to be great heroes. I can't wait to see it. Shame it comes out in NZ in April. :#

DC put in a good perfomance as did Liev Schrieber.
Enjoyed the movie - don't know if it was historicaly accurate and don't really care as I didn't go to watch a documentary but a film of how a group of people struggle and cope
