BTW, right now its looking like Green Lantern will hit DVD and BluRay some time in late October.

I recently read that GL is one of the biggest flops of 2011--accordingly it needs to make about $500 million to be considered successful, and it hasn't even cracked $200 yet. I have a feeling, though, that it may get a second life on DVD--all the people who were super-heroed out this summer, didn't want to pay $9 to see the movie, were scared off by the reviews, or who were too drawn into the giant-robot thing will be putting GL in their Netflix queues and grabbing it out of those red boxes!

I now eagerly await Sir Miles' impressions. :p

I wouldn't hold my breath Tony, I'm more than happy to wait for this film to air on TV ;)

    The papers said that GL only took £5m at the UK box office....and 'disappointing' wouldn't begin to describe that monetary return....a second moviel doesn't look positive....but if you enjoyed it...that's all that matters -{

Perhaps we could change the name of this thread from 'Dedicated Green Lantern Movie thread' to 'Sort of interested but not really bothered Green Lantern Movie thread'... :))

The loss is yours Sir Miles; I was hoping the positive viewpoints of some fellow AJB'ers would sway you and help to broaden your horizons but hey, c'est la vie.

What if I told you there was a hot inter-species sex scene that occurs 2/3 of the way thru the movie? Bet you'd be interested then, wouldn't you. :v Of course, I'd be lying, but you'd still be interested. :p

It probably is my loss Tony...the biggest problem is GL means nothing to me...not normally a problem but it seems to be more than useful here...that coupled with the fact the trailer left me cold...and the special effects didn't look very special :#

I finally got around to seeing GL this weekend. IMO it was good, not great. Not being a follower of the Green Lantern mythos, it was impossible for me to get excited about the appearances of the cast of characters such as Sinestro or Kilowagg like ardent fans would. I can see that for a Green Lantern reader, this film would have all of the necessary aspects to make it a solid GL movie experience. But it seemed to be missing any sort of real hook for the casual filmgoer. I left the movie not really caring very much and I think that has more to do with Ryan Reynolds never truly convincing me that he wanted or decided to be a superhero. He's the hotshot hubris-loaded rebel we saw Robert Downey Jr. play in Iron Man, so that kind of left me saying 'show me something I haven't seen'. As for the Lantern scenes themselves, they were all entertaining enough...although for the non-fan, it can be kind of a frustrating experience watching a Ring that can 'do anything you can imagine' being wielded by a guy who seems to have a very limited imagination. It didn't help to see a bunch of other Green Lanterns standing around not do anything, either.

I can see why the film is performing under expectations. A slightly improved script might have been able to push this from a solid fan-base entry to a film that any moviegoer could sink their teeth into.

Yeah, but it wasn't an R certificate! :D

Ok, so maybe the Green Lantern movie wasn't quite as successful as some of us might have hoped. That doesn't mean we won't be getting more GL. WB/Cartoon Network are premiering a new animated series this November and here's the first extended clip (scroll down a bit to see the clip).

The Green Lantern movie is hitting home video on October 14 in a variety of formats including 3D, BluRay and standard DVD. The BluRay editions will include a longer, alternate cut (no word on just how much longer and what was added back in) as well as a new digital copy format which can be either downloaded or streamed in real-time to most portable devices.

So, who picked up their copy of GL today? I did. Standard DVD since I don't own a Blu-Ray player. At least not yet.

I bought the BluRay 3D version; still haven't had a chance to watch it, hopefully later today....

...and having now seen it my opinion of the movie from when I saw it at the theater still holds: its a flawed but still fun and very watchable film with some good action sequences; its only real failing is that it didn't more strongly embrace the comic book on which it was based.

The edition I got also included the standard BluRay and an extended cut. The extras are pretty ho-hum; there is only one interesting deleted scene between Hal and Sinestro at the graveyard of the Green Lanterns (without effects). The additional scenes in the extended cut are primarily of young Hal, Carol and Hector on the day Hal's father dies; again, nothing special.

As such, anyone considering picking this up would be best served by getting the standard BluRay or DVD editions as the extras aren't really worth the money except for the most die-hard of GL fans ... like Sir Miles. :p

Like Tony, I bought my standard blu-ray copy on Friday but have yet to watch it. I've read various reviews on the dvd transfer and extras and they were very middling at best with what Tony has already stated. I'm too much of a DC fanboy to let that sway me and although GL was a flawed movie, my love for the character is strong enough to overlook any negatives the film may have had.

Honestly of the 4 comic book movies released this year, they were all pretty much the same in weight but all fun and enjoyable in their own ways. I have to admit that my son and I really enjoyed Dylan Dog even if they stripped some of the mythos from the European comic.

Back on subject, here is a short clip that was shown this weekend at the NYCC this weekend of Bruce Timm's new animated Green Lantern series. Click on the link and enjoy:

So Sir Miles, when you picked up your copy of Green Lantern it didn't include the pamphlet with all the movie merchandise you can buy? I can post the link for you if you like? Lots of cool Green Lantern stuff like a replica of the Lantern and a ring like the Green Lantern wears? Just let me know if you'd like the link. I'd be more than happy to post it just for you!! :D

*J/K with you Sir Miles, please don't ban me
