What do you think of GoldenEye? I like it, I think it's a great post-cold war Bond story.

Goldeneye is my favorite of the Brosnan movies.

But this is partly because I am biased. I have been a Sharpe fan for many years, so I automatically like anything that Sean Bean is in. Here he plays a great villain with a great background story.

And not being nationalistic here, but I think Femke Janssen is pretty great as Xenia as well, following in the footsteps of Fiona Volpe.

I Have To Agree Wirh Mr White GoldenEye Is The Best Of The Brosnan Bond Films, Even The Music Score Although No-Where Near My Favorite Seems To Suit The Coldwar Feel Of The Movie.

Actually it's a post-cold war Bond story. It deals with the fall of Soviet Empire, and everybody thought Bond would never survive, after the cold war fizzled out but he did.

Are you talking about the movie (GoldenEye) or real life?

It's a great Bond film. It was the re-boot of its time and worked very well (for me at least). The music score throughout is bloody hidious though. But it had most of the formula. I liked , and still like M as a women, but I think that is down to Judy Dench. Moneypenny wasn't a pathetic walkover, and had a bit of fiestiness about her. Gadgets, a DB5, locations, a good few villans, a sexy co-star - all went towards what is my favourite Brosnan film.

I thought GOLDENEYE was very tepid. It looked liked the makers were just dipping their toes into the water to see what would sell next time around; and thankfully TND delivered the goods. {[]

TND is Brosnan's best Bond IMO. :) A harder edged post Moore era film like LTK and QOS.

I won't comment on the two following Brosnan efforts. 8-)

GE was my favourite Brozzer Bond; I enjoyed TND as well, though. In fact, basically I think the Brozzers got less good as they went along---but the first half of DAD features IMO his best acting in the role.

When I first watched the Brosnan films, I found myself making comparisons with Bonds by previous directors.

To me, GE felt like a Terence Young Bond: dark, and, although post-Cold war, with some of the ambience of FRWL.

TND felt good-time and celebratory, like a Lewis Gilbert spectacular but with a modicum more intelligence.

TWINE felt like a stronger John Glen episode, with human interest to the fore (but not as good as Glen at his best).

DAD felt like a weaker John Glen or Guy Hamilton episode: messy, unsure of itself, and self-indulgent.
Critics and material I don't need. I haven't changed my act in 53 years.

Pretty much sums up my feelings as well. GE is by far my favorite Brosnan Bond outing (I wish they'd hurry up and release the BluRay already); Brosnan brings a good mix of toughness and humor to the role and doesn't take himself or the proceedings as overly seriously as he did in some of his later efforts. Its the one movie where his performance and the movie's tone really line up perfectly for me.

Sean Bean is for my money the strongest adversary during Brosnan's tenure; its nice to finally see a villain who was a physical and psychological match for Bond.

The supporting cast is all very good in this one and give some interesting and entertaining performances (especially Godfrey John as Ouromov).

The tandem of Izabella Scorupco and Famke Janssen is pretty impressive and far more attractive than most of Brosnan's other leading ladies (though I'll always have a soft spot for Halle Berry, if only for her looks alone).

You're not being nationalistic at all, Xenia was incredible! :D IMO she was among the very greatest henchmen (people) of all time. I adore her; I really think she was wonderful. Beautiful, sexy, what I wouldn't give to be killed by her. :))

Electra aside, he was Brosnan's only great villain IMO. I hated Graves and Carver, and I was really disappointed with Renard; however Alec truly imposed himself. He was, as you said, Bond's physical and psychological match. But he was also superbly acted, and aside from some disappointing lines ("Do the Vodka Martinis drown out the screams of all the men you killed?"), his scenes were a joy to watch. Plus, his death and the fight that led up to it, was fantastic. :D

GoldenEye is also one of my two favorite Brosnan films (the other being TWINE). Though I admit I'm also a bit biased towards it since before I saw it for the first time on video back in '97, I had already played GoldenEye 007 for N64 and formed by opinion of the movie based on the game.

As you can see from my Avatar, GoldenEye 007 is my favorite Bond video game.

    I agree with Ilya
GE was a bit of a taster for me. It presses all the right buttons, but doesn't really deliver the goods.
TND does this in spades for me. GE tends to telegraph its action scenes, while TND just keeps hitting you with them over and again.
PB was never the best at delivering insight, but he's rather good in TWINE, just a pity the rest of the film is so poor.

Thanks. :D I just wasn't sure how to refer to Xenia. Do I call her a female henchman or a henchperson? ?:) :))

Yes the post-Cold War essence is fantastic-much like the Euro films of the time. The color scheme really adds to this as does Eric Serra's fantastic moody score (except for the godawful end song!!!!). What disappoints is the way the story just begins to come apart into strands. What begins as cool and detached delves into tradition and nuance.
High points: Score, Xenia, rogue 006, Valentin, smarmy 007, style, return of the DB5, colors, and of course Boris. Not to mention the unbelievable teaser trailer with the Parodi-Fair music!
Low Points: Script leaves one hanging, Natalya (my dislike may come from the n64 game), Wade, disappointing climax, and terrible end song.
Overall a better Bond, but not so sure about the execution. The closest Bond ever came to Ronin.
Best scenes: The cold opening, Monte Carlo, St. Petersburg.

No, not at all. I have always found GE superior to TND. Only recently have I changed my mind about how horrible TND really is. (it's slightly better than I thought originally-barely above DAF.) I like GE, but was just nitpicking. It is still the best of the PBs-TWINE could have been so good-why did it have to go south in the second half?
