Pet Peeve

Just about everyday I read something that annoys me and what I read today really annoys me so I have to share. A British family claims they are too fat to work and need more Government assistance. This "I can't work phenomenon" is not isolated to any country, I see more and more of this in the States too. I work in a building with about 1,800 others, and we have visually impaired, hearing impaired, and handicap folks all busting their butts to come to work. People who are perfectly capable of working and don't, then whine they need more Government benefits make me sick. End of rave out, I feel better now. ;)

If you have a pet peeve, I encourage you to share, you may feel better.

I do have a pet peeve. The parking in my neighborhood. City law says you have to move your vehicle 1/10 mile every three days. If there's a vehicle that has been sitting longer than three days you can a number and report it. A person comes out and marks the vehicle, it then has to sit for three more days before anything is done about the vehicle. My peeve is the people who bend this rule. They use the street as a storage place for their car. They either a) let the vehicle sit until it's marked or b) move the vehicle every five days. I wish there was a law that made it illegal to use th street as a storage place for your vehicle. Yes, parking on the street in my neighborhood is already bad enough, that's why that's my pet peeve.

Bad manners. Roadrage. Chavs. Middle-class green issue preachers. Chocamoca grande laite coffee in a bucket-sized cup. People who drink these on the move while on a mobile phone. Mobile phones in restuarants. Ring pull tins of food which break every other time whilst opening, and then won't work with a tin opener. Traffic wardens and private clampers. Teenagers. Teenagers who wear their jeans actually under their arse cheeks. Menus with "drizzle of" or "foam infusion of..." "Bed of" and "jus" with French, Italian and English words all used in the same sentance. Cheap supermarkets and the people in them - can't afford good food but always have money for smokes, lottery, booze, too large flatscreen TVs and unlimited SKY channels. Benefit blaggers. Work dodgers. Excessively loud speakers. Public ******* scratchers. People who pick up their dog s**t, then dump the bag - really f***ing biodegradable now. Bad car parkers. People who bang their car doors against other cars. Especially on my new M3 - my first new car and one I can't really afford in a sensible world of wife and child and child on the way. People who talk or use a mobile in the cinema. The bloke using his phone in the cinema during Quantum of Solace who ended up wearing my pepsi max. The bloke who reported me for said drenching and called the police. The police who actually tried to take it further. Missing the end of Quantum of Solace and having to watch it later that week. The other bloke who kept asking "what the f**k was going on?" during Quantum of Solace and having to keep quiet because of not wanting to risk another altercation, which would have been only my second in my 37 years, but nonetheless my second that week. Noisy neighbours and nosy neighbours. Parents who can't displine their kids. Parents who make a meal of displining their kids in public - but you know it's just for show. Hard-done by TV chefs who work so hard and get paid a fortune for it. Cyclists who ride two abreast. Cyclists in lycra. People who can't ride a horse, but choose to do so in the middle of the road on a blind bend. Local newspapers. Local newspaper reporters. The people in local newspaper features. Reporters on TV reporting on a flood - they will always, always stand in the water. People who always want to ban things.

Good thread - I'm not done yet - I'll be back. I do feel better though.

People who decide to walk up the escalator when there's a perfect staircase right next to it that no one is using. :s

Or even better, people who feel the need to walk down an escalator, pushing and shoving everybody in their way, when there's a perfectly good staircase right next to it.

Another pet peeve of mine is people who feel the need to talk during a movie, or even worse during a concert or other live performance. Besides being rude to everybody else in the area, its also disrespectful to the artist on stage. I don't mind the occasional comment but some people practically do a running commentary or carry on an extended conversation that has nothing at all to do with the show. If you've paid good money for a ticket, then shut the $@%# up and pay attention already.

The funny part is that he paid over a hundred dollars for that concert only so he could make a fool of himself by yapping the whole time. He could have stayed home and listened to himself for free. :))

Since we're talking about pet peeves, and in honor of The Watchmen, another thing that bugs me is comic fanboys who diss a movie over the most minor of offenses. Case in point: there's a security guard who works at my office; he's a major comics fan and Watchmen is one of his favorite books. He went to see the movie and when I asked what he thought about it, he could not bring himself to say he enjoyed it (even though he clearly did) choosing instead to fixate on a couple of very minor differences. He was angry for example, that the comic intimated that the Comedian killed JFK, whereas the movie showed a scene of him holding a rifle on the grassy knoll. He could not get past that scene and went into a tirade over why it should not have been included. When I told him that based on his own comments, the good in the film seemed to far outweigh the bad, he simply looked at me like I had two heads and muttered something about how that didn't make a difference. At that point, I left him to his ongoing self-analysis and went back to work.

Since you brought it up Tony, it kind of goes with what you said. People who feel the need to shout out song requests. The band on stage can't hear you so just relax and take what songs the band wants to play. If they don't play the one song you want to hear, it's not the worst concert you ever saw.

Yet another peeve of mine, cell phones. I work face to face with the public. It's very annoying when I'm trying to get info from a customer and all they are doing is talking away. X-(

Don't even get me started on cell phones, especially with people who use them while driving. I can't tell you how many times my brother and I have almost gotten into a traffic accident because some airhead was too busy talking on the phone to pay attention to the traffic and subsequently ran a light or switched lanes without looking or commited some other act of motoring stupidity.

Honestly, what conversation can be so important that you'd risk your life and the lives of others over it? If it's that important, then pull over somewhere and talk all you want.

I own a cell phone, I think its a great invention, but I rarely use it. I average maybe 45 minutes a month (if that). For me its a tool, to be used when I need information about something or in the event of an emergency. I'm also way too cheap to pay for all the extended features. I've never texted anyone a message and hopefully, I never will.

I'm guessing what ever part of the world your in Tony there's no law that says people can or can't talk while driving. Out here in California it's illegal to have a phone to your ear while driving. You must have a hands free device while driving. Of course, people don't obey that law. I've seen more people driving with phones to their ear than before the law passed.

I've got one similar to that one. I don't know about where you live, but here in Melbourne, it's commonly accepted on escalators, that those who wish to remain where they are should be on one side, and those who want to walk can be on the other side. My pet peeve is when peoples, often couples, stand next to each other on the escalator and do not move. It infuriates me, and I'm not the only one. What happens is I need to get home, and I come to an escalator, but I can't walk down quickly because someone has decided to be in the 'walking' line and not walk. :s

It really annoys me that people don't register that it is a public curtesy, not to stand on the side of the escalator that is understood by all, to be for walking purposes. They don't do it because they disagree with the principal; they do it because they simply don't care.

X-( I feel the exact way that you do. I've spoken to you about this in the past, but I'm not surprised that you don't go to the cinemas all that often. I'm not a confrontational person, and with one exception (when I saw 300), I've never had the courage to ask someone to be quiet. There have been countless times when I wish I had done so. One time saw someone destroy Raging Bull for me. :#

The thing that really angers me is this. Some people think that other audience members are actually interested in what they think about the film, so if it is funny, they don't simply laugh, they laugh so loudly that it becomes difficult to hear the dialogue (which happened, for example, when I saw Pineapple Express); if it's scary or shocking people have enormous reactions (I particularly hate it when I see a film in which a character makes a controversial comment and I hear someone gasp 'Oh my god!' :s); and of course they talk. Alot. I'm not suggesting that cinema audiences should be as silent as statues; I would love that, but I do realise that it is probably a bit too much to ask. :)) What I would like, however, is for people to be respectful. Laugh, gasp, have fun, but don't do it so loudly so as to disturb other people and please stop talking!

Also, turn off your mobile phone. Many people, including some I know, don't turn off their mobile phone and I don't understand what is so important that you can't turn off your mobile phone for 2 hours.

Those are just two of my pet peeves. Great thread. :D

I agree with both of you.My god--whatever happened to common courtesy?I rarely go to the theatre anymore, largely because I'm always concerned that someone sitting behind me will verbally react to what's on the screen or stage by offering a running commentary.I've gone to movies where some of the people in the audience have done everything but pop open beer cans while watching the film. Then there are their little children who are let loose to run up and down the aisles...

And I've grown to hate the telephone.I need one, but I've been getting all kinds of computer generated messages trying to sell me stuff I don't ever have any intention of purchasing.Got 6 calls the other day(at 5 hour intervals)--they all hung up rather than leave a message.

And then there are those idiots who are clearly physically fit who think nothing of parking their cars in spaces reserved for the disabled...

I wish business owners had the right to ticket people who parked in spaces reserved for the disabled. I also wish it was harder to get a handicapped card. It annoys me to no end to see a person with a card get out of their car and not show one sign of being disabled. Who knows, maybe it's not even their card, but a friends card.

people my age and older who mess up "you're and your"

also, people in a few of my classes who aren't willing to just LISTEN to my teacher's accent (he's French) to figure out what he's trying to say before asking in a very hurtful tone. I hate seeing Dr. S's face fall like that.

People walking in front of me who see I'm obviously in a hurry, but walk slow and block the corridor/sidewalk ANYWAY, often chatting on their phones and ignoring my increasingly irritated "excuse me" pleas.

Middle Schoolers who think they're extremely cool and try to give me attitude when they are the one's visiting my university and blocking my access to the dining hall, when I'm in a hurry. My cool soon fades, and I glare, which causes them to scatter. Good times.

Well, a minor one. When you're about to play your DVD, the music playing when it's waiting is the same as the music about to begin on the main titles. So when they come on it's just plain repetitive.

And on the Bond Ultimate Editions, it seems that if you want to go to a specific scene, you have to go thru the old 'Commentaries are not us guv, we're nothing to do with that' preamble and angry lion roaring malarky just to get it to play.

also, on DVDs.. the Doctor Who classic ones when they load up, show clips from the story of a few seconds - spoiling the story! some people may have seen it before - but a lot haven't - that's why they've brought it - so what's the point?!

Agree with trailors, plus naff ads sponsoring the news or The Bill popping up an inappropriate times, eg after silence of Hillsborough Tribute, up pops chirpy Sheila's Wheels tune. 8-)

Now, got my room painted a brighter colour. It looks good, but don't choose matte is my advice, despite the painter's instructions. It picks up the dirt, such as when you lean on it briefly, and when you rub it clean with a flannel, the paint comes off! :o To avoid that you need sheen or luxury silk or summat. Matte is good if you're a photographer, to avoid reflection.

Gripe 2: those digital cameras. Never quite realised some of them have a bad delay of at least half a second. Okay for landscape work, for action, forget it!

One of my biggest peeves is adverts and warning alerts before watching a dvd...
FACT this dvd is legitimate so why are you wasting my time showing me an advert about copyright theft, surely if I was doing it, I wouldn't have purchased the real thing, but also why is it, I can't skip through them, its my DVD, my DVD player, and I don't want to watch them X-(
Another major peeve is my bank, I have a direct debit set up so every month £40 goes into my ISA account, however last month, I didn't have £40 in there, so I phoned my bank and made them aware, however because I didn't give them anough notice chances are I will be charged, firstly how can they charge me for not having enough money in my account to transfer to another account that belongs to me :s and secondly and more annoyingly they charged me £38... so I didn't have £40 in there to transfer so instead they took £38 and left me Over Drawn X-(

Talking of parking spaces - it really annoys me when people without children (especially small children) who park in the Mother/toddler spaces.

Hey - it's there for a reason - mainly a bigger parking bay, so that people with normal size cars can open up the toddler door to unstrap/unhinge/whatever....(or when Oliver was a baby, to undo the baby seat.) You can't do that squished up in the tiny car parking spaces that British supermarkets insist on giving us.

Once I parked next to some 'hot shot' in a sports car - he blatantly didn't have a child with him, and yet there he was, parking in a mother/child parking space. I was feeling particularly peeved, as I had circled the parking lot a couple of times - so I gave him a piece of my mind. Poor guy, didn't know what had hit him :))

Where do I begin with my pet peeves, there are so many!!

One big one is chavs, 'muff said really!

Another one is those people who come upto me when I used to work in supermarkets etc. look at me standing there in black pants and BRIGHT BLUE SHIRT WITH 'LIDL' PLASTERED ONTO THE BREAST then say, "Excuse me, do you work here?" even when I was sat at a till, or when I had served them on the till they would go home then drive back, push to the front of the queue and demand a refund of 3 PENCE as i had accidentally charged them for one extra carrier bag, then after I had gone to the trouble of getting the manager to refund the money and tried to calm down a load of angry customers in the queue they would turn to me and say "I know it's not much but every little helps y'know' OH and yet another thing is when they would come into store and open the packaging of food just to look inside, aswell as opening cans of energy drink and drinking it on their way round with the intention of just paying for the empty can buafter drinking half of it just decide they dont want it anymore and just put it back!!

Other things I resent include, mothers taking babies into the cinema, those patronising women at the jobcentre who talk to you as if you were a child, jamie oliver, russel brand, people who ask me 'whos phoning at this time???' I DONT BLOODY KNOW, IF I KNEW THAT I WOULDN'T NEED THE BLOODY PHONE!!!

Rant over, can you tell I have issues with the world lol!

    Drivers who don't indicate
Taxi drivers tailgating your a** off
Slow drivers who do well under the speed limit (especially on a NSL road when they do summit like frickin 35-40 MPH.)
    Hesitation at roundabouts
    People that don't indicate
People that drive in the gutter
Buses pulling out, generally being a pr*t
Full beamers (leaving lights on full beam at night as they pass you)
