Just a quick question, why did Columbo on FYEO say that he smuggled pistachio nuts? Why would he need to do this, they're not even illegal! Just a little lost on this lol

Thw writers here want us to understand that although Columbo is a crook he's not a bad man. He's just avoiding taxes and tarriffs. Fleming made Columbo a likeable pirate, in the manner of Darko Kerim in FRWL. The scriptwriters wanted to keep that aspect of the character in tact.
This is also an opportunity to emphasize the real evil of Kristatos. Columbo dodges tarriffs but Kristatos smuggles heroin AND spies against the West AND worked as a Nazi double agent AND
lusts after Bibi AND is responsible for the death's of Melina's parents.
What's a few pistachios compared to that?-{
