The Living Daylights - stolen footage

I remember once seeing a posted on the now defunct Art of James Bond website which was issued to cinemas around the time of TLD. It claimed that there are bootleg copies of the movie floating around, stolen from the production. The disclaimer also said that these rough takes are worthless and should not be confused with the actual movie - it was still missing sound effects, music, etc.

Does anyone here actually remember this event and could explain what happened / was this true?

Here what happen according to IMDB: Some unedited footage was stolen and videos were sold as if they were the completed movie. Albert R. Broccoli and the other producers then released a poster explaining that this copy of the movie was unfinished and had no soundtrack or special effects at all, saying that the only way to see the real movie was going to the cinema.

I remember around 2000 or 2001 reading a magazine article that some copies of this work print were being sold, thought other than some different camera angles and different dialogue it does not offer anything new to the viewer.
