The Villain's car is a Merc.

I was counting up how many times a Bond villain travels in a Mercedes Benz in the older films.
OHMSS-Irma Bunt's Merc 220 and Merc 600 Pullman, and again in DAF ("look what the cat dragged in!").
Then FYEO Locque has his Merc kicked off a cliff.
Octopussy-General Orloff drives his down the East German railway line and
in TNDies they chase Bond's BMW in a car park.
Any others?
In the modern Daniel Craig films they seem to prefer Jaguars.
De Bleuchamp.

Mercedes have probably supplied more dictators, mafia and criminals than any other make. They are a pretty soul-less brand with a huge badge in terms of ego and perceived status.
The Jags probably had something to to with Ford's ownership at the time of filming. That would go for the Land Rover/Range Rover connection and Craig's hidiously long footage in that naff Mondeo in CR. Aston were also owned by Ford, but I'm sure they were independant by the time the DBS was released and CR was filmed.

For years Mercs were very well built and were very reliable, and if I was thinking of taking over the world It would of been my first choice of staff transport. But now their living on their past reputation and do very badly on reliability tests. Now adays your dictator would more than likley go for the souless Lexus. :))

But with product placement, are they even allowed to feature another make of car prominently? :( Or are they allowed negative product placement? ie it's the villain's car so don't buy it?

That's interesting. But I supose car makers want to sell cars whether they're perceived as a good image or not. I always think that someone in the production of a film has to benefit personally. Or that they pay handsomely to get their product in the film. It was fairly blatent with BMW in Brosnan's era, but Ford and by proxy Jaguar and Land Rover in this current Bond incarnation are something else. There's several in every carpark. Now Jaguar, Land Rover and Aston Martin are all seperate from Ford it will be interesting to see if any pop up in Bond 23.
