    Saddened to report that

    Helmut Schmidt, former cancellor Germany

    Schmidt_01.jpg

    died today in Hamburg at the age of 96

    He was one of my idols and I still regard him to be the best politician that we've had.
    RIP, Sir! :(

    Sad news.

    I thought that Konrad Adenauer was a very good German chancellor too. -{

    Actually no.
    Adenauer is a legend but if you look behind the curtain, he was highly flawed.
    Schmidt was a personality - larger than life!

    Definitely. But since he died in 1967, most of us only remember him from history books. Schmidt on the contrary was very present after his time in office as an "elder statesman" and editor of DIE ZEIT weekly newspaper. Until a few months ago he was still travelling, giving interviews, etc. Pretty impressive at 96.

    You'll know much more about German politics than I Higgins, so I'll bow to your view. :)

    Sadly, I only really know about the bad old days of Weimar Germany and then Hitler from my interest in History (I'm most interested in von Papen and General von Schleicher due to all the political skulduggery) but I did study Cold War Germany too at university and Adenauer always stood out for me.

    What do you think of the current German Chancellor Angela Merkel?

    I remain very interested in British, German, Greek and Italian politics. :) -{

    Sorry to hear about the death of Saeed Jaffery, The man who would be king is a
    Magnificent film.
    Also saddened to learn of the death of Warren Mitchell. As fine actor in many roles
    but best remembered I'd say for Alf Garnett, the biggoted, racist big mouth, who we
    could all laugh at. ( Becoming Archie Bunker in the US).

    Yes, farewell Mr Garnett. Made a brilliant comeback in the mid 1980s, thanks to a resurgence in creator Johnny Speight's writing skills.

    But as the series is now seen as unPC (it was sort of always meant to be, and sending the character up, but still) Warren Mitchell can now be seen more often in reruns of The Avengers and The Saint, where he normally played put-upon East European types. He also turned up as a spiv character in Carry On Cleo of course, auctioning off Jim Dale and Kenneth Connor as slaves.
