Sir Christopher Lee

Christopher Lee, who is one of the most prolific actors of all time, with over 250 film and TV appearances under his belt, was knighted in the Queen Elizabeth the II’s Birthday Honours List. The 87 year old veteran star is relentless in his work ethic. A representative for the newly dubbed “Sir” said that he was unavailable for comment about the honour, because he is busy shooting a movie in New Mexico.

At one point, Lee, according to a USA Today poll, was the most marketable star in the world. He rose to fame after taking on the role as the bestial monster in Britain’s low-budget Hammer Horror Studios flick “Curse of Frankenstein.” Finding a niche he stuck with the horror movie theme doing other “scary” films such as The Mummy, Dracula, and The Hound of the Baskervilles.

Some of the titles, other than “Sir”, that Lee possesses are Most Connected Actor Living, Most Films with a Swordfight by an actor, and Tallest Actor in a Leading Role (Lee stands at a staggering 6ft 5ins).

Among a few of the recognizable names, out of the 984 people honored in Queen Elizabeth II’s Birthday Honors list, are Golfer Nick Faldo, who was knighted alongside Lee, Celebrity chef Delia Smith was promoted to Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), Tony Award winner Alan Cumming, Hairdresser Vidal Sassoon, and U.S. economist David Blanch Flower, all also received royal honors.

Knighthood is the primary honor. Then the list continues in this order, Commander of the Order of the British Empire, Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE), and Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).

Very well deserved and long overdue. I love all the Hammer stuff and also the Amicus compendium classic Dr Terror's House of Horrors with Peter Cushing where Lee plays a snooty art critic. He was a pretty good Bond villain too.

It is extremely well deserved. It's extraordinary when one considers, that as well as playing Dracula a record number of times and Sherlock Holmes, he has appeared in three of the biggest series of all time; James Bond, Star Wars and Lord of the Rings. How many actors can boast that they've played both Dracula and Sherlock Holmes, let alone appeared in three legendary series? He may very well be the only one. My congratulations to Sir Christopher. -{

Absolutely agree- but there's more to it than that. He's appeared in more films than any other living actor, is invaluable in playing Six Degrees, and in Holmes terms is unique in having not only played Holmes several times but also his brother Mycroft and Henry Baskerville.

I love the story (possibly apocryphal?) re "Lord Of The Rings" concerning director Peter Jackson attempting to advise Lee on his death scene-

Jackson: Okay, Chris, when Brad stabs you I want you to....

(Lee looks down from his 2 metre height and in that voice )

Lee: Peter, my boy, I was dying in films before you were born.

I can't believe it's taken this long to recognise the contribution Christopher Lee has made to the film industry - his knighthood is long, long overdue.
