It just doesn't sound right. Johnny Cash did a version of Thunderball, and that didn't work either.
I apologize for bumping an old thread but I found out about Cash's "Thunderball" only recently and though I'd post the link for those who have yet to hear it. I like Cash a lot but I guess the country style wouldn't have fit the Bond titles. Have a listen, though. Good song in its own right.

I have to admitt that I quite like it. I'm not the biggest fan of country music, but Cash had a terrifically deep voice which I think could have worked. It's probably better that he didn't record the official version, however I do think it's pretty good.
"He’s a man way out there in the blue, riding on a smile and a shoeshine. And when they start not smiling back—that’s an earthquake. and then you get yourself a couple of spots on your hat, and you’re finished. Nobody dast blame this man. A salesman is got to dream, boy. It comes with the territory." Death of a Salesman
The obvious film for Elvis to have done a theme song is "Diamonds Are Forever," but he could easily have done another film should it have had a soulful love ballad. Elvis was one of the greatest voices of rock and roll and one of the last who could actually carry a tune rather than rely on the music to carry him. It's a shame he never did a Bond theme, but considering that throughout the 50s and 60s there was considerable effort to turn him into a movie star, it's probably not all that surprising that what might have been considered a competing production would not be able to or even want to use his talent.
Off topic, but Sinatra was asked to do You Only LIve Twice and he passed it over to his daughter... but I wish he'd done a version of it at least, because it sounds v much like his kind of song. Three Coins in the Fountain sort of stuff.
