I worked with Christof at the end of 2009 on plans for his homer. It was the first time we collaborated on a Bond prop and many emails went back and forth regarding various dimensions, which we did not initially agree on. Consider that we had no access to original homer drawings or dimensions. Using a photo of ‘Q’ holding a parker jotter pen, which we had and knew the size of, we were eventually able to develop dimensions of the homer. This was 2009-2010. I just received the FE Homer and compared the two. According to the documentation that comes with the FE Homer, they had access to and used original drawings and dimensions in the development of the prop. I was very impressed in comparing the two. They are identical in outside dimensions. This is impressive when you consider that Christof and I only had the photo of ‘Q’ holding the pen to work off of. Actually, Christof's version has a superior appearance that is dead-on to what we see on screen. My point is that contributors to this site are super talented and Christof is a precisionist and perfectionist. If the FE homer is accepted as accurate, at least in dimensions, then the methods applied by Christof and other contributors to the site can result in screen accurate props, which is impression given with what they have to work with. In the photos (click to enlarge), the Homer on the left is the FE version, the one on the right, Christof's. Sincerely, George
George, thank you for all the nice comments. You are a true friend!
I knew that the dimensions of our Homer were going to be close. We worked hard on it.

I for my part sympathize with Christofs disappointment.
That closeness in all dimensions is too close to be a coincidence imo and I am very uncomfortable with the idea, that FE could have ripped off Christofs project.
In my opinion, it's FE's turn to comment about all this - I mean - Barry constantly shows up here to promote and support his sales.
He should respect us fans and give us his part of the story and give us evidence, that their replica is based on other informations than Christofs prop.

A sad state of affairs if true. I have Christof's homer too and I know about all the hard work that went into creating it. A great gift from a friend, it's a solid and substantial piece.
Thought about getting the FE version for the sound effect, however this puts a different spin on things. I wonder what FE has to say about it.

So, what sharp little eyes you've got...wait till you get to my teeth.
"People sleep peacefully in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf." Richard Grenier after George Orwell, Washington Times 1993.
Hopefully we can clear something up here, although I am not sure what it is we are being accused of?
Our replica is based, as with all our replicas, on the available reference. If the item is available we study it, if not we look for any information we can obtain. But in the most part when an original prop is not available for study we use screen reference as the major resource.
The original homer prop was lost after the production and its whereabouts are unknown. However we did have access to some original blueprints which were very useful. Portions of these blueprints have been included in the prop story booklet that accompanies the replica. However we deliberately chose not to replicate the entire blueprint for copyright reasons.
In addition, in isolation the blueprints are not perfect. It is rare, particularly in the mid 60’s era for a hand-made prop to precisely match any plans or blueprints. Often small changes are made between concept and what is finally seen on screen and that is the case here. Certain screen accurate details are missing from the blueprints. So in addition to any reference we always check screen reference very carefully, this is after all what the customer who is buying the replica see's. They want a replica that matches what they saw on screen.
We had no contact with Christoff and have at no time received advice or information from him. We freely admit that from the images we have seen his work he appears to have done a nice job, it is however not totally screen accurate and is missing a number of details that are not immediately visible from screen reference alone. We can categorically state that we certainly did not copy his work.
If our replica is very similar in size it’s really not that surprising, particularly with this prop. The homer is a small rectangular box with a fairly simple shape and design and is seen in close up detail on screen. The dimensions of the prop are easily obtained by taking stills and using a computer to extrapolate measurements. The truth is, if two people are attempting to copy the same item, using essentially the same reference, if those people are good at their jobs the results should be the same, or very close to it, should they not?
Several of the posts here seem to suggest that if something has been previously copied unofficially by fans that we should not consider it as licensed replica ... just in case the result is too close to a previously produced fan project.
It also seems that people are saying because a previous fan made project exists that our official replica is somehow diminished or weakened by its existence? Truly that leaves us totally stumped.
There is no conspiracy here; there is no secret to be uncovered. When we receive assistance from AJB members we always try to acknowledge it and are always grateful. Several people lent a hand with the fine details of this project and they know who they are, but Christoff was not one of them.
However he seems very talented and as we have repeatedly said, our door is always open and we always like to talk to people who feel they can help or assist in any way.
I think everyone knows that Cristof did not help you in bringing your prop to market. Else he would not have said what he said. The issue, as I see It, is if someone else provided you his prop, and did you use it to make your homer. Further, did you use any fan made prop to create your homer? You simply may not have been aware that it was made by Christof. I think these are fair questions for perspective consumers of your products. Christof is held in high regard here.

No, we did not use any fan made replicas in the creation of our replica, Cristof's or otherwise.
We looked at a number of pictures of previous replicas, and asked for opinions from owners to gauge an idea of what was expected/preferred. But that is all. At no point did we actually study a physical fan made replica and no castings or copies were made of any previous replica.
All technical details used to create our replica, such as dimensions etc were taken from blueprints and screen reference, which were then used to create master CAD files.
FYI - Here is a little trade secret we use when extrapolating dimensions from an image.
You take a known dimension, in this case the domed head screw, which was standard Imperial flat head size and therefore a known ø, or X.
Take the measurement X, import the image into 'sketch up' or similar then virtually 'measure' X in teh image to create a ruler. with this you can then virtually 'measure' the distance between two coordinates in the image. Its is accurate to within about 2 or 3 mm when the object in roughly parallel to the viewer , but that us typically enough to get general dimensions for projects like this. Especially when the product is a simple cuboid. It is not effective for complex items or curved/shaped 3D objects.
As we are all using the same the famous screen grab images of Q holding the Homer its not surprising that two people will arrive at very similar dimensions when they use this method.
The blueprints are not actual scaled drawings, they are more like production sketches they do not have full dims or detail on them. However when we checked the dimensions we extrapolated with the dimensions we gleaned from the blueprints, they were almost an exact match.
I rarely post to the AJB but have to comment again. In the past, my posts were only to share my work with the props makers of the forum that I sincerely admire. I seem to have opened a can of worms here; and rightfully so. I know a smoke screen when I see one. Using someone’s' else's work without permission or acknowledgment is theft, plain and simple. Not to admit makes it worse. I have been a model maker for nearly all my life, and two models of the same scale are never the same, never! I worked on the drawings and dimensions (click to enlarge) with Christof and the screw head FE refers to is not seen on screen or in any other published photo. Screws with the same thread will have different head sizes and therefore working off of this will not provide the actual dimension unless you have the original screw head in hand. Besides, let’s be reasonable, a screw head is too small to accurately scale up to the point where two model that are totally unrelated, are exact in all dimensions. As FE claims, using an unknown screw head size from a partial drawing to scale up dimensions is a long shot and the probabilities that the final prop will be an exact copy in every dimension to the one Christof and I developed is practically impossible when you consider that ALL of the dimensions are the same, including the thin fins which are difficult to approximate from the screw image. Even the sliding mechanism is essentially the same. And by the way, Christof's homer also had (before FE) a magnet inside. Please note that the initial response from FE only says that Christof did not assist. We know that, this was Christof's point! FE’s response is evasive and goes on to discuss prop research and fabrication, which is obvious to many of us, and off point. Someone, that FE will not identify, helped them with the project. Why won’t these people come forward and show or explain how why assisted? I firmly believe that Christof’s homer made its way to FE, with a little help from XX. This is unethical. Long winded defensive responses usually indicate something that is being covered- up. Helping with a project is nothing to be ashamed of; I request that FE tell us who 'helped' them. What or who is FE protecting?. Sincerely, George

George is, like Christof, another person whom I respect and admire for their incredible abilities. Much of what he said above seems to ring true to my ear. Nevertheless, as Bondtoys alluded to above, FE has made the statment that they did not use a fan made prop to create their homer for the mass market.
My personal feeling is that the fan made homer of Christof and George probably was copied. My beleif in that scenario may be in part influenced by my day job which causes one to sometimes expect the worst in people. However, beleif in something is not proof that it happened. So I'm not accusing FE of anything. In fact, they may be blameless. I'm simply stating my beleif based on a feeling nothing more. Again, there is no definitive evidence one way or another as far as I can tell unless the parties involved come forward. As I see it, everyone here has to decide for themselves.
Finally, please don't decide based on my opinion. A shamus or two has been known to get it wrong. I did feel it important, however, to say where I stand.

Still sitting on the fence with this one I'm afraid. I have a great deal of respect for all the parties involved. The only thing I do know is that now I have one of every FE 007 prop produced, I'm not going to stop now, I just wish I'd had the money when Steve was up and running, the briefcase would have been mine, all mine, my precious
Well we cannot win can we? If we take the time to respond then our reply is seen as long winded and defensive, attempting to cover something up. If we don't reply we get accused of not answering questions.
Again , for the record, we are not protecting or covering up anything. There is no cover-up. We have explained our process and tried to explain that when two people approximate measurements from similar images they will likely come up with similar results. Nobody helped us. We asked for opinions from several AJB members, nothing more. Nobody supplied us anything and nobody gave us anything to copy. Our CAD plans were drawn by myself and two members of our team at our factory in China.
We used screen reference, blueprints and still images to extrapolate our dims. The domed head screw is very visible in these, as is the 'access' line, which was used on the original; prop to get to the interior. You clearly see the screw head on the underside of the device and the ø of the heads of these types of fixing are a standard sizes, not the thread, the ø of the dome. You can also use the size of Q's thumb. as long as you have something in the image that is known you can use it to extrapolate a rough ruler with which to virtually 'measure' the object. Its not engineering tolerance accurate, but it's close enough for these purposes and we were able to check our approximations against the blueprints for confirmation. You used a similar method, and we came up with very similar dimensions... not all that surprising really.
To comment a on a point you made "Using someone’s' else's work without permission or acknowledgment is theft, plain and simple. " So to clarify, you were involved in the production of an unlicensed bootleg without any permission from its owner. Theft by your admission. However you and Christof somehow now have 'ownership' of the homer's characteristics and dimensions? What you are effectively saying is that anybody making an accurate replica of a homer has to acknowledge you in some way because you 'own' its dimensions . This is where things start to get a bit ridiculous
As we have said previously, the previous unlicensed replica was nice and was pretty darn accurate. (It is missing several key details but I have not examined one in person so will not presume to make judgements on it) Dimension wise you approximated something pretty close. Because of your accuracy we are to be vilified and accused of all sorts of negative things because we produced an accurate , officially licensed replica?
As you can imagine licensors are not that keen on applauding or even acknowledging the work of unlicensed fan bootlegs, however we as a company do try and work as best we can to bring people toward the 'light' and official side of things when we can. I have never suggested that you or Christof lack any skill, in fact we greatly respect the amazing creativity that we regularly see from the fan prop makers. But the truth is nobody but EON 'owns' the rights to the props featured in teh films and their dimensions etc. We could if we chose be ultra aggressive and insist that action be taken against each an every fan project, however we chose to try and engage with the community and get involved. And for that we are repeatedly attacked. Honestly.... thanks guys.
You should take pride in the fact that your approximations were very close (within mm) to the original prop and stop making accusations against us or looking for conspiracy theories that simply don't exist.
Fans have made replicas of props from movies for their own consumption for years. The problem, as I understand it, is to sell those replicas. However, I am not an attorney.
Beyond that, I have never met a true Bond fan that has made a prop to get rich off of it. They make them because no one else has, and they've always wanted one. While they are at it they make some for a few friends. It's a labor of love for the Bond films in general and the prop in particular. For EON to thwart such efforts would be to step on the very people who have supported the franchise through thick and thin over the years. I don't think they would because they seem like reasonable people to me.
Just one more item that should be food for thought for the Bond fan. The last licensed Bond prop maker was S.D. Studios many years ago. If and when FE goes it may be a long time before there is another one. They need fan support to keep going. So it is up to the fan base, the loyal Bond fan wether or not FE survives. Perhaps, despite what we feel, we should give them the benefit of the doubt. I suspect, however, they need us more than we need them.
