Licence to Kill vs. GoldenEye

Which Bond film, do you prefer Timothy Dalton's last Bond film or Pierce Brosnan's first film Bond? I prefer Brosnan's first because it had a fun factor that Dalton's last Bond film lacked.

Two rather mediocre films. Both terribly generic for both their times but I am giving this one to LICENCE TO KILL because of Timothy Dalton and Robert Davi.

What the hell are you talking about!? Licence to Kill may be mediocre but GoldenEye isn't because GE is a frickening masterpiece when compared to most of the films that followed it. (TND, TWINE & DAD)

GE still isn't a good film despite what followed. At best, it's a decent run of the mill 90's action film that is Bond-lite. LICENCE TO KILL isn't much better either but at least it didn't have obnoxious dialogue, a cookie-cutter Bond, and a lame villian.

Why aren't I surprised that I disagree with Rick on this? :v :))

For me, it's GE all the way. I regard GE as a fantastic film, Bond or otherwise, and as the last truly great Bond film. It was also IMO the best Bond film since TSWLM. Brosnan (my second favourite Bond) was extraordinary and produced one of the all-time great Bond performances. The action scenes were magnificent. Alec was a superb villain. Xenia was arguably the greatest henchwoman of all time as well as one of the greatest villains of all time, Bond or otherwise. The screenplay, and much of the dialoge (not all but much of it) was fantastic. Xenia was glorious. Natalya was really good. Xenia was one of the the greatest female characters in the history of the Bond films. :x The fight scenes, particularly the climatic one, were wonderful. Xenia was a goddess.

My only problem with it was the psychoalalysis; the "why are you like this?" on the beach, Alec's "does the vodka martinis drown out the screams of all the men you killed?" and M's horrible "misogynistic dinosaur" speech, a scene which I detest, and which led to the 'M's apartment' scene in CR; IMO one of the worst Bond scenes of all time. Psychoanalysis beagn in CR and was IMO its major flaw. Other than that, I think the film was a masterpiece.

LTK is one of my least favourite Bond films (along with AVTAK, TLD, DAD and both Craig films.) Featuring one of the worst Bond performances of all time (although not quite as bad as Dalton's performance in TLD and Craig's performance in QOS), it was an example of horrible execution 'winning' over a fantastic concept. The concept was classically simple; Bond goes rogue to get revenge. I know that some people don't like this as they regard it as more Bourne-like than Bondian, but I think that, if done well, it can work. What let LTK down were three things; its lead actor (Dalton remains my least favourite Bond), its screenplay (messy, overly complicated and incompetent at parts) and its attempt to compete with some of the 80's more violent action films. Sanchez was a brilliant villain, Lupe was sexy, Pam Bouvier wasn't bad, there were a few good lines and the concept was of course fantastic. But with Dalton in the lead (Brosnan would have been awesome, as would Connery and Moore), and with its screenplay, LTK was IMO one of the worst Bond films of all time.

LTK all the way. A proper Bond film.
Pierce: smug and oily. I hated GoldenEye.

GoldenEye took steps to have everything LTK didn't: a Cold War theme, femme fetales, gadgets galore, the Aston Martin DB5, a leading man who could do jokes, space-age stuff too.

But it also lacked LTK's credible, scary villain and its straightforward, easy to follow plot.

I enjoyed LTK more at the cinema when it came out than I did GE, which I found disappointing. But GE has more 'bumps' in it ie moments that are rewatchable, there's always something new coming along in it. Actually, I didn't find the exection in GE that satisfactory (and I'm not talking about Onatopp's thighs...) as the jokes in GE just arent as good as they should be.

A LTK guy - (only drawback, a terrible title track) - Despite this not feeling like a larger then life Bond, I have an affection for this unique little film.

Plus I could watch Carey Lowell read the phone book for two hours and be happy. She, "Wasn't bad" Dan? If you say so kiddo! :o

Dalton is my second or third favorite. Depending on mood.

She was indeed, and as controversial as this may be, I have always preferred her to Fiona.

I take it you don't approve? ;) Well, how about providing some arguments as to why you consider Fiona to be better instead of giving me a silly 'smack' response.

Personally, I prefer Xenia as she was completely unique; gorgeous, strong, passionate, superbly acted with a kind of bloodlust, she was simply extraordinary.

That's a toughie - Timothy Dalton is by far my favorite Bond, though I did find the material in GE to be far superior to LTK. I believe like I saw posted elsewhere, had Dalton helmed the role for GE we would've had one of the greatest Bond movies of all.
That being said I do enjoy Brosnan's performance, and GE without question saved the franchise, (IMO) so I'm going to have to give this one to GE. Now had this been GE vs. TLD things would have to be different :)

I have to agree with you here.

But have you seen her in Nip/Tuck?

If she was extraordinary in Goldeneye, she was gorgeous there.

Goldeneye. Better plot, better cinematography, far more action scenes, better looking and better acting women, one of the best actors for Bond (sorry, but those in disagreement are just plain wrong...), a setting and timeframe that was up-to-the-minute - post cold war/emerging Russia, and above all a quality feel to the whole film.
Don't get me wrong, unlike a lot of people here, I actually enjoy all Bond actors and films, but Goldeneye is the better film.

First time I've been called kiddo in quite a while. :)) Yes, she was good looking, however I don't think she was as beautiful as Lupe and IMO she's not among the best looking Bond girls.
