There's only six Ian Fleming stories that have been successfully adapted to the silver screen. The first two Bond films (Dr No & FRWL) were about the closest Terence Young could get to Fleming's original novels. Then Guy Hamilton came along and improved upon Goldfinger's original plot while maintaining the spirit of that book.
Once again Young came back and like Goldfinger, Thunderball became a pragmatic adaptation. After the adaptation decay that was You Only Live Twice, Peter R. Hunt really did some justice to OHMSS's original story but at the time it didn't matter because George Lazenby was extremely unpopular.
In 2006, Casino Royale followed in Goldfinger and Thunderball's footsteps by becoming the first pragmatic adaptation in years. In between OHMSS and CR'06 there was a slew adaptation decayed Bond films. And once they got to For Your Eyes Only the stories became too short to have much effect on the movies.

Well even though YOLT, DAF, MR, LALD and TMWTGG are adaptation decayed I seriously doubt the producers will revisit them so they could try to make things right. Like you said there's always the continuation novels but Michael Gregg Wilson has foolishly decided to make life hard for himself by ignoring anything that wasn't written by the late Ian Fleming.
So I think you're just going to have to accept the fact that those six Bond films are the only decent adaptations in 007's fourty plus year movie history.
