    Thanks Miles,

Right, shall I kick this thread off with The Prototype GoldenEye Magnetic Mine.

Turn up the volume, as it was shot with a girls phone camera :D

As you can see, it is still in the prototype stage, the finished mine will even be magnetic :s

Ed, that sure looks fantastic. {[] Is that made from saitek mx230? It looks like you have painted only the top of the mine?

Looks great!!! Hope to get my GE mine finished soon.

Ed can you show us a pic of the back of the mine, to see how the magnets are arranged and if there sunk in level with the base! Cheers

I cut circles into the base then indent the magnet so it's level with the base.

I guess thats where they would have been on the real prop!

Believe it or not....there were no magnets on the actual prop.

When I saw it there was a wax strip of paper over something on the back of the mine.
I peeled it back to see what that was all about and saw that there was some type of sticky putty stuck to the back. In the film, all they had to do was "slap" it against something. We all, of course, thought it was magnetic....LOL Nope!! just gooey

The versions we're all making are more like what we THINK we saw in the film and therefore...better!!!

I'd say a good deal of the stuff us guys on here make are actually better than the real props, wouldn't you say ed? B-)

Only in the sense that we try to make our replicas item function as we see it perform in the film.

Often in a film several props, that each perform a different function, are used to make it appear as if the prop is capable of performing all of the different functions.

Sometimes digital compter enhancement is used to make lights flash, etc and the sound departments adds sound effects such as beeps, etc.

As we strive to duplicate these props we attempt to incorporate all the "special effects" into our replicas. We add circuit boards with LED's, incorporate sound boards, etc.

An example of this is mentioned above...it was much easier for the prop guys to add sticky putty to the back of the "Magnetic" mine and make us think it was magnetic as opposed to doing what I did and spend the time cutting and indenting actual magnets.

The end result is the same...the bomb "sticks" However, mine is what we perceive it should look like.

There are a few prop replica makers here amongst us which have produced outstanding replicas through their dedication to perfection and modelling skills.

No need to mention names....they know who they are.

I have used the rubberised self adhesive magnetic sheet, al a fridge magnets to cover the whole base. You can get it in A4 sheets, just trim to fit. It gives a very neat appearance and will stick to anything (metallic). Also you are normally going to display this mounted so the back won't be seen. Hope this helps.

Just a thought Ed, but some would say the film version is "better" in that it is more adaptable..

try sticking your magnetic version to the painted plasterboard/fibreglass they used to look like metal doors/walls .. :p

when it comes to "bonding", there's nought better than goo.. ;)

Been a bit busy with some other projects, but wanna get back on with some bond stuff so made myself a Goldfinger Mini homing device. Still needs a bit of clean up, and havent yet decided on whether to have a shiny or brushed look.

Also working on a buzz saw watch, but got a way to go on that yet!!

Whilst trawling you tube I came across this, which I thought was pretty kewl!!

Ok, will do. Unfortunately my PC died a couple of days ago, but will post as soon as I get it running again.

PC up and running. Have reuploaded the pics to post no. 1 of my topic here. Im working on a better version of the watch, well a few variations of it anyway. Will update the topic when I have something worth showing.
  • danjaq_0ffdanjaq_0ff The SwampsPosts: 7,283MI6 Agent
Cheers for that, so did you ever make other versions of the watch ?
  • JamsterJamster ukPosts: 54MI6 Agent
Ive made some parts, ie bits for the brass reels and some cases. I wanted to use a better/more accurate watch face. I wanted a watch with the sub sec dial at the 6 o'clock position. I purchased a mechanical one a while back, trouble with that is you have to wind it every day!!! I was looking for a battery version, or maybe an automatic. Either way the next one I make will be better!

I'll take the mechanical one with a sub-second dial. I don't mind winding everyday. I have several watches like that.

I havent done anything with the mechanical watch as yet. Ive wound it for the last few days and it seems to last about 8 hours. Also received another watch yesterday that I thought would be a good match, but when it arrived it was way too big!! The watches Ive seen that seem to be a good match are way too expensive!! The quest goes on......
