I recently bid on, and won, a collection of pieces, entitled "James Bond 007 genuine used MI6 secret service film prop file & papers
", described as, "this is a genuine prop MI6 file used in the bond film the world is not enough complete with papers some wear to file. ". Now I stumped up for these and a few other minors bits and pieces, and noted his positive feedback rating as 1136 for the last 12 months. When the pieces arrived most of the papers looked like photocopies, and some were even repeated copies. Last night I saw that he had another batch of papers and files, again, "James Bond 007 genuine used MI6 secret service film props", and spotted that a few of the papers were the same copies that I'd received. I emailed him, highlighting this, asking for the genuine, originals, and to stop hawking his copies fraudulently, and this was his reply:
"my brother got all the props directly when filming finished the file you bought is clearly seen in the castle thane sequences when M is having her MI6 meeting. many files were seen and are filled with 'fillers' which is the paperwork relisted that ends today . you need to bear in mind that Bond wraps about 8 months before it hits cinemas so its cut edited ( when filmed the actual footage is often between 12 and 24 hours ) and any reshoots are decided and extra scenes or shots if required. for continuity a number of all props are duplicated for example Bonds guns are multiples and some of the costumes have 30 or more sets of the same one even though you only see them once and sometimes briefly. i am happy to fully refund you if your not happy after reading this but its fact and your welcome to investigate what i have explained."
Now, I was under the impression that EON were quite scrupulous, even anal, in their prop creation, creating extensive back story, even when the files, for example, are not even seen. They all look and feel real - not just photocopies. Can someone set me straight on this, before I vent my fury on this fellow's eBay feedback review?
Just for your interest, here are the documents in question. Mine first, then the second batch he was selling, which seem to include a few copies of the same pages:
Your "feedback" on this would be greatly appreciated...
One photo of a guy in a white dinner jacket ? Still not convinced. While on the subject of EBay, dose anyone know what the score is with the seller UKREENACTORS2003. This guy has a hell of a lot of Bond documentation and no shortage of buyers. Has anyone had experience of purchasing from him, as I am quite keen on one of the storyboards he has for sale. Apologies if this guy has been discussed before.
I have been very suspicious of this character for many months and have voiced my concern a few times. I think the problem is that people on this site are, if I may be so bold, a little more discerning an wise than this guys normal 'customers', although I too have been duped with the Sir Robert King funeral OoS and Carver media group invite. I think the only way to get the real story on this is to ask danjaq_off (Pete) to ask Meg next time he sees or speaks to her as she is the custodian of all props Bond, another avenue would be to ask the Prop Store who are normally reliable when it comes to authentication. It is only when we have these ducks in a row that we can go to the Gods of the Bay and try to get this guy shutdown as I believe he paints all genuine collectors and sellers in a bad light ............ I wonder if he has a brother in Argentina :v
I am too very aware of this fellow and had quite a few items from him... most are genuine items that would actually cost more to reproduce except obviously paper props... like many items of this nature you never really know (only by how faint your copy might be) as to if it is a genuine production copy or a copy of a copy of a copy etc etc.
things like badges, costumes helmets etc. are authentic as I have had the same items from other genuine sources..
but at the end of the day many things in life are a risk.
the thing with buying from ' high street' prop suppliers is they too have pasts!! and I know of varies times things have been copied and sold in framed as originals. (off the record of course...)
Even in exhibitions items are substituted for slack copies (LTK signature gun at the Barbican bond exhibition)
so unless it is really bought from someone like Christies and costs 'all your limbs' or from a crew / cast member with provenance, I would say its the chance you take unfortunately..
good luck!!
Paul
I think he is good for bits and pieces but don't expect authenticity. I have certified stuff from propstore which I know are fake also. Usually if its too good to be true ........ Etc etc.
IMO, paper props are some of the (and don't take this the wrong way guys) easiest of the props to replicate. With the advent of bluray, getting the details right is becoming more easy.
If you're lucky enough to get your hands on the original (like the above mentioned ebayer seems to have done) then all you need is access to a decent colour copier and the right paper and you're away, literally a licence to print money.
What I would advise people to do is instead of lining the pockets of some chancer who's just popped down the local co-op, originals in hand, I'd place my money in the hands of the various hard working and very good paper prop guys here. Abel, kurtyboy, Gadget Meister and others have produced some really accurate and well made paper props, and these are people who have done genuine work to make it happen.
Unless you're buying the original (which is a rare occurance) I'd put my money up for one of our members here instead of mr fly-by-**** ebayer, after all you're buying a copy in either case, what would you prefer, a photocopy or an individually printed replica?

Back in the days of TWINE this is what the folders contained, some times they were also filled with numbered script pages, just to bulk it out.
Im not saying that these are genuine as everybody has pointed out it is easy to fake this type of thing, but in my opinion they look real enough with the pages that it contains
UK Reenactors has been very helpful and patient with my questions and I just purchased another item from them.
I think the danger with provenance on props is that the seller may be legit but not know they have a bad item. If I believed I had a real prop, and paid $500 U.S. for it with a COA, and then sell it for $500 as a real prop, but it's not real... UK Reenactors has so much inventory on hand...
Thanks for all of your insights. They are all valued and valid. Mmmm. Maybe I'll keep my powder dry and my mouth closed. The file itself looks genuine, it's the filler that I found disappointing. Hey-ho, we live and learn.
Have followed this guys EBay lots for a while now and kept an eye on who has been winning stuff. There are three buyers who make regulars purchases from him. I have then, a few weeks further on, looked on the web sites for The Prop Store, The Prop Warehouse and Moviebits and found that they appear to be selling these same items with COA. So,it would appear that these members of the Movie Prop Association are happy with what they have purchased. So if you are happy to purchase from these members of the movie prop association, better to cut out the middle man.
Right, I am ukreenactors2003 and I have been told that people are on here slating me about the props I sell. I have been selling since 2003 and my brother longer than that and my items are genuine, not fakes or copies and if something is a one off then it is clearly stated in the items description! I have even been asked by people on eBay who have missed out on an auction if I will do them a copy and the answer is always NO! My brother Stephen Knight used to own and run rareprops and he has given it up and moved on to doing something else, not that it is anyone's business! So now I am selling all of the built up rareprops stock that is stored in 3 units and I just take stuff out bit by bit to sell to collectors and fans. Which actually I don't feel like doing anymore if this is what happens! And people are very brave calling people names on here, obviously nothing better to do as I am a genuine eBayer who actually cares about the people I deal with. Steve Lane at Propstore and all the other guys with their own web sites know, buy from me and trust me as well as a large amount of regular clients all over the world. I dont take kindly to accusations and insults, so if anyone has a problem, please feel free to contact me directly! We have our contacts high up in the industry and my brother has supplied costumes and props to many films over the years and this is also how I source some of my items and gain new contacts. If anyone has a problem with any of my items, I reply honestly to them, ie about my brother and also say that they are welcome to a refund if thats what they want. I dont have the time or the inclination to make copies of anything as I run a warehouse for a big New Zealand company during the day and am sometimes up until the early hours packing my eBay parcels. My brother was quite happy to leave the stuff in storage, but I thought it is better in the hands of real collectors and he has and has sold nearly all of the hero costumes and weapons from at least the last 3 Bond films and the biggest collectors can vouch for this! We still have one of the largest Bond collections around and many other props, costumes and paperwork from many other films! You can buy with confidence from me, I'm not selling anything but genuine items! Regards, Richard

Easy now, RRS...you said the guy could investigate what you claimed...so he did...and was told they were (more than likely) genuine...so why the rant ? I've sent you a PM....and I'd rather discuss it there and keep this thread clear...thank you.

Richard - I am at a loss. Many of the comments above have been in your favour, backing up your integrity and background. I believe the question of the "fillers" in your eBay sales has been vindicated. Let us let this matter rest and thank you for your continued support for genuine collectors.

Blimey DM, someone's budgie smugglers are a size too small
Just to point out Rich, that if you thought my previous comments were aimed directly at you, they weren't. There's good and bad in all walks of life and I've seen many 'genuine' props that are blatant rip offs. I've also seen some great genuine stuff up for grabs too.
My previous point was that especially where paper props are concerned (as they're easily copied) is that people should use extreme caution when buying as its just way too easy to get scammed.
I hope you didn't get the wrong impression by mine or anyone else's comments and I'm sure the points you made are welcomed by us all here at AJB.
I'm sorry if I came on here like a tornado but I am very passionate about what I do! I was just trying to defend myself against some of the comments about getting me kicked off of eBay and someone calling me fly by **** which may not have been aimed at me but I don't appreciate things like that. And now the budgie smuggler comment, which was aimed at me but i will let go as im sure it wasnt meant as a means to wind me up, more just a light hearted comment! I am an honest person, that's the only point I was trying to get across! Blair, I'm glad you are now satisfied and we can forget about this.
Regards to all.
