Discovery of The Beatles!

Ashamed only recently in the last few months have become a huge Beatles fan and wished I'd discovered them earlier but because of my music teacher who was a huge Beatles fan killing songs like Help, Hard Day's Night and Eleanor Rigby which weirdly are now my fave! My top twenty is a follows-

1) Hey Jude (at two mins 59 you can hear Paul saying "Oh f***ing hell!"
2) I am the Walrus (just a random but great song)
3) Strawberry Fields Forever (amazing song)
4 Help! (another good song)
5) Eleanor Rigby (another good song!)
6) Yellow Submarine (classic)
7) Can't Buy Me Love ( great song)
8) Hard Day's Night (title was said my Ringo by accident!)
9) Drive My Car (not one of the best but I like it!)
10) Penny Lane (another classic)
11) Sgt Pepper's (such a good song)
12) With a Little Help From My Friends (timeless classic)
13) Eight Days a Week (not the best but it's one of my many favs)
14) Ticket To Ride (good song)
15) Here Comes the song (a later Beatles song)
16) Yesterday (good song because it's a bit different)
17) She Loves You (another timeless classic)
18) In My Life (has to be in everybody's top 20 surely?)
19) Let It Be (timeless really)
20) Hello Goodbye (another Ringoism I think?)

So that's my top 20 you can suggest other songs that are not on my list for me to listen to but chances are I have heard them because you can't be a Beatles fan if you haven't heard them all really! Ringo has to be my fave because he is funny when he is drumming! Head at an angle similing!

I think my favourite has to be "I saw Her Standing There" (great intro to the first track of their first album).

    Roll Over Beethoven
Help! (the version from the US OST album - Bond type intro)
    Run For Your Life
    Good Day Sunshine
Got To get You Into My Life
    Revolution
    Get Back
    Long Tall Sally

Did the Beatles ever make a bad record ? I don't think so...

Personal favs. (not mentioned above) include....

Everybodys Got Something To Hide Except For Me And My Monkey
    I've Got A Feeling
    Day Tripper
Got To Get You Into My Life (demo version)
Dear Prudence (fantastic sleazy bass line)
While My Guitar Gently Weeps (great lead guitar from Eric Clapton)
    Revolution
Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)
    I'm Looking Through You
    Getting Better
    Taxman

Love them all. Last year I did five Beatles Mix discs---each 80 minutes long----shuffled chronogically for more of a 'musical essay' effect. It's great stuff to write to B-)

It's now semi-fashionable in some circles to disregard them...but they're a seminal building block in what popular music is.

Not heard Long Tall Sally but I will try to hear it.
Sir Miles I belive they did not ever make a bad record. It was really hard to make my top 20!

Well...Long Tall Sally isn't strictly a Beatles track....its a cover of a Robert Blackwell song that was made popular by Little Richard - who was an idol to Paul McCartney.

And Loeff is correct....more and more I see people dismissing the Beatles....which I find incredible...its acceptable NOT to LIKE the Beatles (although, is it ? ;) )...but to dismiss them..?...

    I don't think I could ever list my definative top 20 Beatles tracks....there are just too many great ones to choose from -{

Just like Money (that's what I want) isn't a Beatles song because it was written by Barett Srong in the 50's?
It was hugely difficult for me to list my top 20 but there was another 30 I wanted to include!

To me, Beatles songs are a bit like Bond films--there's something to appeal to whatever mood you're in: romantic, thoughtful, fun, freaking out, whatever. Also, like Bond, my list of what I don't like would be greatly dwarfed by what I do like--and there's nothing that I absolutely hate. What can I say? I am nothing if not consistent!

As a student at Liverpool, to those who haven't visited the city, I reccomend it if your a beatles fan. Lots of good beatles merchandise and a great beatles museum on the docks.

Although the beatles aren't one of my favourite bands, I do have huge respect for them as they have been hugely influential on many of my favourite bands. 'Hello Goodbye' always springs to mind as one of my favourites. Also 'elanor rigby' and 'being the benefit of mr kite'.

Gotta say though I hate 'yellow submarine'. That's just about the only beatles song I hate though, other than that they're a pretty consistent band
    1 - LALD, 2 - AVTAK, 3 - LTK, 4 - OP, 5 - NTTD, 6 - FYEO, 7 - SF, 8 - DN, 9 - DAF, 10 - TSWLM, 11 - OHMSS, 12 - TMWTGG, 13 - GE, 14 - MR, 15 - TLD, 16 - YOLT, 17 - GF, 18 - DAD, 19 - TWINE, 20 - SP, 21 - TND, 22 - FRWL, 23 - TB, 24 - CR, 25 - QOS

    1 - Moore, 2 - Dalton, 3 - Craig, 4 - Connery, 5 - Brosnan, 6 - Lazenby

Don't know why, but I remember disliking YS for a while, but have never hated any of their tracks. I included LTS because although it's a cover, they recorded it therefore it's a Beatle song.

Although the quality is not too good, one of their Star Club albums has another favourite, the one that got Brian Epstein to check them out - My Bonnie, by Tony Sheridan and either the Beat Brothers or The Silver Beatles. It's not on my CD version so maybe only on my (tucked away somewhere) vinyl version. There's also "Beatles at The Beeb" as well as the Anthology albums to listen to.

Being born in 1952 I was also lucky enough to appreciate them during their hey days, what with 007 and The Beatles, what else could a young kid wish for.

Perhaps cliche to mention due to what I consider now a slight case of American over-praise for one album. I'd say that .. sitting crosslegged on the floor, enveloped in a forest of green 70's shag carpet, with my parents vinyl album of Sgt Peppers perched on my knees, lyrics directly printed on the back, all the while absorbed in youthful fascination reading and listening as the most beautiful musical movie progessed before my sights and sounds, has just got to be one of the best moments of my life. I mean, besides your first amore. Really.

Over praised or not. I love Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

I don't remember. Probably mono. I don't think mom's stereo system was quite ready for studio 51. All I know is me like what me hear!

Same here...but I do really like it now....great 'sing-a-long' quality to it :)

All are great albums...I especially adore the Anthology albums....particularly the last one.

Just come to me, it wasn't a Star Club album, but one titled "The Beatles - The Early Years" I think on the Contour label.

Sir Miles - Yellow Submarine was the one song I used to sing when travelling by motor-cycle to air shows, when that journey could last 3 hours each way, you'll understand why I grew tired of it for a while.

Ringo is my fave! If you watch any of the videos he is always putting his head at an angle and he looks like he doesn't know what he is doing!
