00 Status Achieved - My New Omega Planet Ocean

Just got my 45mm Omega Planet Ocean 2900.50.91 today. I bought it as a reward due to a recent promotion. I had to order it from Tourneau as they did not have any in stock in any of the stores in my region. It was ordered from the factory with a four to six week wait time. I also redeemed American Express points toward a Tourneau gift certificate. Anyway, I got the call yesterday evening that it was in and picked it up this morning. In my line of work, it's usually the Rolex that's purchased as a result of promotion, but I did that many moons ago in my former career as a Merchant Marine Officer that took me to two combat zones, earned me the Merchant Marine Expeditionary Medal and took me to various ports o' call the world over. Since then several other Rolex watches have made it into my collection. But it was Daniel Craig's portrayal as Bond in Casino Royale that made me want this watch more than any other in a long time. Just like Connery's portrayal as Bond made me want the Big Crown no crown guard Submariner. Enjoy the pictures.

Thanks guys. I've been enjoying the hell out of it for the last couple of days. It's s great piece and the co-axial movement was designed to reduce sliding friction without expensive hand finishing of the movement's parts. So far it's been bang on time.

Question, how tight do you guys wear your PO?

Also do you plan on getting a bracelet too for your PO? I have contemplated getting one for awhile now and I know I would like the rubber more for the comfort but I think I would want the bracelet for dressing up.

A jeweler had a great bit of advice for Ruzgar and I when we got ours...he said get the one with the steel bracelet and order the rubber band as well. Otherwise you pay quite a bit more if you try to purchase the steel bracelet by itself later. We both took his advice and I for one find quite a few occasions when I wear it with the steel (easy on and off with the right tool)!

I own a basic seamaster. But if/when I get a PO, I will get it in a steel bracelet. You can get a replica PO rubber bracelet for around 75-90 bucks that is a dead ringer for a real Omega band. It will fit perfectly and nobody would know the difference. A real PO rubber band cost around 500 dollars .......ouch!

$ 500 for the rubber strap? What about steel bracelet?

Im going from memory but the Omega rubber strap is only around $150 the steel strap is around $600-700.

What The Mantis mentioned above is absolutley the way to go if you want both straps, mine was a gift from my girlfriend and she just purchased the rubber strab and as it turned out the Jewler had to take the steeel strap off the watch to put the rubber one on so when I called him back I was able to take the steel one off his hands for a steel ;)

I agree with the notion that buying the steel on steel 45 mm Planet Ocean is probably the better deal. However there is one slight wrinkle. If you buy the steel on steel 45mm PO, you'll be buying the 2200.50.00 and all your store paperwork and cards will reflect same. Daniel Craig wore the 2900.50.91 in CR and all of my papaerwork says this. It's not a big deal because most of us collectors will never sell so it's a moot point. But if you did sell to a picky Bond collector and kept the original box and papers, you might have a problem.

I also discovered that I could only use one gift certificate per watch perchase, but the points I redeemed from Amex left me with two certificates. So I can use the other certificate to offset most of the purchase cost of a steel bracelet or I can offset the cost of a Felix Leiter Hamilton Khaki X-Wind a la QOS. Not sure at this point I even want the bracelet because I just love my PO as is. It's very evocative of the way Connery wore his Submariner. Time will tell.

I have both the 45.5mm (rubber strap) and 42mm (bracelet strap) versions of this watch - and what great watches they are!

I wear the 45.5mm version in a casual look while reserving the 42mm for wear with suits etc. - the latter fits better under a shirtcuff with cufflinks being a little smaller in size.
