Who was closest to playing Vesper?

Eva Green did a great job playing Vesper Lynd in CR, but who did she compete with to get the part?
IMDB says Cécile De France was close and Audrey Tautou "backed out" to be in The da Vinchi Code.
Some sources say Rachel MacAdams waqs offered the role, but said no and Olivia Wilde was close to being offered the role.
What do we really know and is there more interesting gossip?

Eva Green did the minimum which was required.

Per wikipedia: [MaacAdams] She turned down the role of Bond girl Vesper Lynd in the James Bond film Casino Royale. She stated in an interview in May 2006 that she did not want to star in a big-budget action film because she wanted to pursue other projects."

I thought she was quite refreshing compared to the independent bond girls of the last few films. Plus she is wondrous to look at, there is much more behind her eyes and you get a good sense from the start that there is something a little off. She holds her own on screen with Craig but doesn't try to out shine him as Haley Berry did. I can't imagine anyone else in the role, nor should I.

While I have some minor issues with the way the charecter was written, CR'06 made me a card carrying EG fan.

She has a great screen presence, and was able to stand up to DC's oo7 in a convincing way. I liked her looks - not so much because she appeared stunningly beautiful in every scene, but because she looked "real"! I also liked her ambiguous accent - she could be from anywhere - which made her more mysterious. Not to mention her unforgettable dirty feet"!

EG was perfectly cast, and along with DC and Ginancarlo Giannini really anchored the film with solid acting.....

Other contenders for Vesper may make for interesting speculation, but in I'll always feel that casting in the case of this film was more than dead on!

I didn't have a problem with her, but I found their sudden relationship unconvincing.

Yeah, that was one of the minor issues I was referring to......

The only time I thought Eva Green was even attractive was when she was putting her make-up on in the Bathroom (ie. Tuxedo scene). She just didn't do anything for me....

I did very much enjoy CR ....a few out of place scenes (ie. Gettler?) But I liked it. I thought Michael G. Wilson stole the film with his Chief of Police role! :D

Thanks to Perdog for actually answering the question. :)

To reapeat myself: I wanted to know who was Eva Greens closes competitors to the Vesper Lynd role. I'm shure there are other threads where we can evaluate Eva Green.

7289, dirty feet? I've watched this movie tons of times in blu-ray and never recall her with dirty feet. I personally really loved EG in this movie INMHO she was the perfect women to play vesper hands down! She had it all looks, mystery and brains :)

I'd been under the impression that Rose Byrne came closest to getting the part.

Perhaps Rose Byrne was close. A search on the net gives many hits dating before Green was cast, but I find notthing dating after the movie was made. Not real proof in a court of law, but is it a sign she wasn't on the final list?

The only names I'd heard were Rose Byrne and Rachel MacAdams. However, I think neither of them would've fit the role just right. My preferred customer out the list mentioned thus far is Audrey Tautou...she has a good look for the role, but that is IMO only and from my imagination after reading the books.

Vesper as played by Green left something lacking, I just can't pinpoint it. However, she did a fine enough job and held her own on screen with DC. However, the dirty feet were disgusting. :D

Rachael Sterling was also coinsidered and if I remember right, was short listed as finalist before Eva Green signed on to play Vesper.

I know there were rumours about Charlize Theron. Was she really considered?
